  1. As my custom assets work has increasingly shifted from models towards scripting, I'll open a new thread here to contain any scripts that I write which can be reused in other missions, starting with the A ) Presence Lamp This is a Lost City-style lamp that brightens and dims depending on the presence of the player or an AI. It fades between 2 colours and can trigger its targets whenever it switches fully on or off, so it should also be viable in various other situations. The standard setup consists of the following: - a trigger_multiple brush. The spawnarg "anyTouch" controls whether AIs, too, are able to activate it - a presence lamp, highly recommended with a colorme skin - one presence light, or any other light with appropriate spawnargs The targeting chain is trigger brush -> lamp -> light When the player or an AI stands in the trigger_multiple brush, the lamp switches on and starts a short timer. Subsequent triggers reset the timer. If the timer runs out because no one's standing in the trigger brush anymore, the lamp switches itself off. Notes - Multiple trigger brushes can target the same lamp, and one trigger brush can target multiple lamps. However, each presence lamp can only target one light, so if you want i.e. a bouncelight you'll need to hide an additional silent presence lamp somewhere and target it from the same trigger brush. - The lamp and the light use their own colour spawnargs respectively, since setting 0 0 0 on a lamp would make it appear pitch black. - Technically the trigger brush can be exchanged for anything else that triggers the lamp every 0.5s (this number can be changed via "update_interval" on the lamp), i.e. a trigger_timer. - This was originally named the proximity lamp and was one of many scripting jobs for The Painter's Wife. I've renamed it to "presence lamp" because the mapper may place the trigger brush(es) wherever he wishes: proximity to the lamp is not a factor. Credits go to Bikerdude for putting together the crystal lamp models. Download Presence Lamps - Google Drive Place or extract the .pk4 into your FM archive, then look up the presence lamp prefabs. If you already are using other custom scripts, remember to add the presence lamp's .script to your tdm_custom_scripts file. B ) Teledoor This is a Skyrim-style door which opens just a bit into a black_matt "void" before teleporting the player to a different area of the map, which may represent the other side of the door. This is used for connecting physically separated map areas with each other, such as when there's an exterior/interior split of a building or ship to allow for more mapping freedom. [Full Thread] C ) Mass Teleport This is a teleportation setup designed to seamlessly teleport the player and any moveables between two identical-looking areas. This allows the mapper to link 2 physically distant areas with each other while maintaining the illusion that they're connected. The teleportation zones should be free of AIs as they can't be teleported like this. [Post] D ) Automaton Station A station for Sotha's automatons (includes the automatons) which can be switched on and off by patrolling automatons. (Part of core assets as of 2.10) [Post] E ) Camgoyle A sentient turret originally made for the FM Written in Stone. It's based on the new security camera entity and augmented with scripting to allow it to fire magical projectiles at the enemies it detects. People are more than welcome to use it and to convert it into something else, such as a mechanical turret. [Post] [Download] F ) Audiograph The audiograph is an Inventor's Guild device for playing back recordings stored on spindles, which are small metal cylinders the player can pick up and store in his inventory. [Post] G ) Turret A new companion to security cameras familiar to Thief players. It will become active as soon as an enemy is detected by a targeted security camera, firing projectiles to fend off the intruders. Similar to the security camera and the camgoyle sentry, turrets are highly customisable in their behaviour and appearance. [Thread] G ) Fog Fade Dynamically change fog density depending on what location the player is in. [Thread]
  2. TBH, I'm all for keeping stuff easy. This brings more complexion to an already complex system, which takes into account leaning, movement speed, crouched and standing position and stuff. I also think that most of the people here underestimate how hard this game is for beginners. It's even hard for me, and I played this game and similar games for almost 20 years now. TDM is a LOT harder than the Thief games, and, those were considered quite hard back in the days as well. I don't think the barrier of entry should be set even higher. I also frankly see no benefit in terms of gameplay or atmosphere. And, if I may also say this: The original Thiefs didn't have it. May sound lame, but, I think this game tries to capture the feel and gameplay of the originals. Including certain gameplay mechanics, which IMO shouldn't be touched.
  3. Thanks for clarifying. Unfortunately there's still a bug as the barrier never goes away: When I first enter the apartment the husband says "is she hurt, please put her on the bed"... I do so and the objective is completed, but after that the husband says nothing else and the barrier never goes away. I looked around the room and tried frobbing him, but nothing ever happens for some odd reason. Wonder if some triggers or signals got broken in latest dev?
  4. Here's something I found out about the other day, for all the stealth action fans. Apparently the engine and the game code for Monolith's No One Lives Forever 2 has been released under GPLv2 about two years ago. http://freegamer.blo...o-what-end.html The game was already open source since 2007, but as most games with and SDK release, it was bound by a more or less restrictive engine that only allowed you to modify the original game. The later release, however, appears to be licensed under GPLv2 hence pretty much allowing any developers to make their own games with it, if they wish so. As for NOLF2 itself, I persnally consider it to be one of the best stealth action games around right below the Thief series. The AI could use some improvement (most of the times it's actually TOO smart) and the game mostly forces players to kill their way into the objectives instead of using pure stealth, but the game is still incredibly deep, and entertaining. For those who have never played any game of NOLF series, here's a little trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spxATsZoYIg And here's a link for the source code itself, since the one in the article appears to be dead http://www.atomicgam...-code-and-tools And a githubbed version of someone who has already been trying to make a multiplatform version of it. https://github.com/penenin/lithtech
  5. The devs didn't title this thread, and @datiswous said they're attempting to mislead people by using Russell's name and a retro style to make it resemble Thief, which is cynical. I grew up on forums like I'm sure anyone who likes a game from '98 did. I actually left the Discord immediately after joining it because it was more off-topic doom-posting than anything relevant to the mod. I thought the forums might be better, but it's mostly just grown men yelling at clouds and telling strangers how mature they are, and a few brave souls actually developing anything. Depressing place, I'll just stick to enjoying new missions every 6 months without an account.
  6. Since G Suite became Google Workspace, legacy users have been able to retain free access to its work-oriented collaborative office web apps. On July 1st, however, this will no longer be the case, and enterprise users will need to pay for access. In an email sent out to business administrators today, Google stated that they will have until May 1st to select which paid plan they wish to migrate to. After that date, Google will automatically migrate them “based on what [they] currently use with [their] G Suite legacy free edition.” If Google automatically selects a plan for you, you will not be billed for two months following the change. If users decide not to enter payment information by July 1st, Google will flag their accounts as suspended. The company notes the following: "After 60 days in suspension, you will no longer have access to Google Workspace core services, such as Gmail, Calendar, and Meet. You may still retain access to additional Google services, such as YouTube and Google Photos. Enter a valid form of payment to restore your suspended account." If you do not wish to pay for Google Workspace, the company has gone ahead and published a support article detailing how to export your organization's data. Pricing information is available on workspace.google.com/pricing.html. Nonprofits and Education (Fundamentals) plans will still be free for those that qualify. https://alternativeto.net/news/2022/1/google-will-no-longer-allow-free-workspace-access-to-g-suite-legacy-users-starting-july-1st/ https://9to5google.com/2022/01/19/g-suite-legacy-free-edition/
  7. True, but, 1. this thread is called "Western stealth FPS with Stephen Russell", and, 2. nothing you said changes anything for me. The gameplay still doesn't look like something I'd enjoy. And, if you really think this forum is cynical, then you don't visit forums much. Actually, the majority of the users are are pretty mature, unlike in other forums.

They will supposedly do the one-game-a-day spree for 15 days starting on December 20, ending noon on January 4, with a Jan 4-11th game after that. Totaling 17 free games during their "Holiday Sale", counting Destiny 2 here. https://slickdeals.net/f/17152273-destiny-2-legacy-collection-2023-pc-digital-download-free https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pD5h9JfwjewnN7DTKPu-Ad89ukaStLaY7nB5jhOAEyE/edit#gid=504781956
  9. We didn't make the holidays (such a busy time of year) so here's a New Year's gift, an unusual little mission. Window of Opportunity Recover an item for a regretful trader out in a wilderness setting, and discover more! Available within the in-game mission downloader or: Download: http://www.thedarkmo...ndetails/?id=79 Alternative: https://drive.google...WTMzQXZtMVFBSG8 Some unorthodox gameplay on regular/ghost difficulties. (Arachnophobes might prefer short mode...) Please expect to need your lantern in regular and ghost modes! Short ("easy") mode is a smaller map, so if you are looking for areas others reference below, or 100% of the loot, you'll need to play on another mode. I wanted to create my first mission before I became influenced by too many others' ideas, and limited myself to what has been done before. As such, this mission is not set in a city/town, and has some features that are likely to be provocative. There's a section some really like, which others don't, either way I kept it short to not last too long. That being said, I hope you do find it fun! :-) Special thanks to those who provided valuable testing and feedback: Goldwell, Kyyrma, plotzzz, 161803398874989, PPoe & Bikerdude (who also contributed a sound). (Please remember spoiler tags to not expose things meant to be discovered by playing.) Like so: [spoiler]secrets[/spoiler] If you are having trouble finding the main objective, here's what to pay attention to in the mission for hints: There is a spot it's possible to get stuck on the ground in the corner by the cliff/rockfall where there's a rope laying on the ground, please take care if you poke around there!

  11. Beta 11 Fix finished-on state auto-update was unreliable Slighty improve scanner title/author detect Tags are now named some whatever regular-version-looking thing to force GitHub to put the newest at the top
  12. With TDM 2.12, after the credits finished, the "Mission Complete" screen did not display. I found that the screen was black and I could hear my footsteps when I tried to move around. I think the reason for the mission not completing successfully was that the "Do not kill or harm allies" objective was never marked as "1 = STATE_COMPLETE" instead it was left as "0 = STATE_INCOMPLETE". Note, I didn't use noclip throughout the mission. Same as: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/18054-fan-mission-the-accountant-2-new-in-town-by-goldwell-20160509/&do=findComment&comment=458491
  13. How about using TDM automation framework (and maybe pcem/qemu)? More info see: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/19828-automation-features-and-discussion/
  14. "Crushing the user" and "destroying videos" is your subjective impression of what they are doing. Objectively, they're showing ads to pay for their service. You can also subscribe, and get an ad free service. Really, there's nothing unethical about it. Unethical would be to block their ads, and use and consider their service as free for you, while it isn't. Don't take this personal, it's simply something I often read on the net. I don't think any of us really likes to work for free on their dayjob, right? Google and other big corporations also don't have some kind of money creating machine in their basement, and there are real people working for them, who should get paid for what they do. I wouldn't even say that's ethical, it's simply how life works. I don't know why big companies always have such a different status than your local 10 employee business. They're also a business, and, there's a lot of people working for them. Who should get paid for what they do.
  15. Re: "Heather" As I recall, Kingsal was gonna work on a replacement but he hasn't had a chance to work on it yet. We would gladly accept any offers of a replacement asset. I believe the story is that the asset was on an open free model site credited to a personal account. Sadly, this is a risk for any asset we don't create in house.
  16. Hey all, I just noticed on the TTLG forums that Xorax released a large (1600+) set of textures for public use. I browsed through them and they match well with TDM. While they don't have normal maps, I'd still recommend giving them a once-over. Here's the TTLG thread: https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=151606

  18. Woo!! 2.10 Beta "Release Candidate" ( 210-07 ) is out:

It wont be long now :) ...

  19. I was curious about this mission for being just 1Mb. Had a bit of free time to play something today, so I went with this one. Completed in Ghost, not full loot (though I ended up cheating to find JD's key, because I'm a blind dummy). That's a bit of a spoiler. I wish I hadn't read it before I got down there. The only two things that bothered me a bit were that the guards all have the same voice, and that there's too many loot coins. I'm lousy at noticing loot coins in random places. The underground house is pretty damn cool. Very nicely crafted. I nearly got caught at the beginning. I lockpicked JDs door and got in right as the guard turned the corner and commented on the open door. I somehow improvised in a room I had never seen before. I turned off the lamp and hurried behind the desk. Turns out it worked, his lantern didn't reach me there. He never saw or heard me, so he just left and said "must've been rats".
  20. Thanks. Linux user and I play TDM at least weekly: Never noticed any physics issues myself, whatever happened in the FM must be a relatively rare scenario... that's a FM I haven't revisited so I was lucky to miss the bug then. There is in fact a little problem in latest Beta, though it's so small I didn't bother to document it carefully, but I'll share the idea of it at least: If you climb into a tight space between an object and the ceiling and turn on the flashlight, jumping may cause the light to phase through the floor and disappear temporarily. Say you have a crate pressed against a ceiling where you can only climp and go in while crouched... if the surface is high enough to allow a jump but just low to force you to be crouched, you'll see the light source of the lantern disappear temporarily in mid air. Think I saw it in The King Of Diamonds, if it's important I'll boot it up again and noclip to get a viewpos. Just to make sure you've seen my mention: Please check my message a few posts above where I attached a log, we have a crash where killing AI with a broadhead arrow can cause the engine to go down with a "tried to free uncached trace model" error... not even a main menu crash but one to the OS. It's pretty rare but if you fatally shoot AI often enough it will occur eventually.
  21. I don't think we have a thread where we can post and discuss free or indie games in general. I was browsing Gamejolt site and found a few interesting ones. http://gamejolt.com/games/action/dungeon-nightmares/25444/ Spooky random dungeon. Really foreboding atmosphere. The game constantly makes the player jump with a variety of effects, and it seems to be working, since the jump-causing effect varies a lot and one never knows what could happen. Interesting piece of work. Especially for FMAs interested in horror-type missions. In the field of horror, SCP containment breach is also a notable piece of work. Too bad the engine sucks so badly. http://www.scpcbgame.com/ http://gamejolt.com/games/shooter/super-wolfenstein-hd-now-with-realistic-physics/39194/ Wolfestein shooter with heavy focus on physics. Quite impressive, really. And also funny, as the AI are heavily physics controlled, and are flailing about like drunken astronauts when you hit them. The end boss is a must-see, as he fires twin miniguns that make him shoot all over the place because of the recoil of the guns.
  22. I don't think there's a link to thedarkmod.com on forums.thedarkmod.com ...

Yeah and the wiki and moddb. It should have those links in the footer I think. Probably easy to add by an admin.

Edit: And a link to the bugtracker. I'm always searching for a post in the forum that links to that because I can't remember the url.

Reluctance to improve the forums is matched by reluctance to allow more people to work on it. Talk about trust and power.

  23. Cheers! I've been wondering for some time now if it would be possible to compile the source code of TDM to the Raspberry Pi, especially the models 3 and 4. I've seen some videos online of people running Doom3 on it, so how hard would it be to compile the source of TDM for the raspberry pi? Would it need a major rewrite of some parts of the code? I've been "tinkering" with the source for some days, and as I was expecting, all the configuration files are made for x86 architectures (Linux and Windows). I've been searching online for some info about the toolchains needed to even start compiling the source for these arm machines, but the information has been quite lackluster and outdated. I've managed to track down a toolchain to compile c++ code for the raspberry pi, made by the pi foundation but I'm not quite sure how to use it and I guess the support for it has been dropped for quite some time now. Anyway, I figured that instead of wasting more of my time, it would be best to ask here what you guys think. Is it possible to even think about this, or does TDM use some kind of libraries or other external code which makes it impossible to compile for the pi? Is there anything related to the game that makes almost impossible or too much of a hassle to try to port the game for the raspberry pi? Performance isn't an issue for me. I just want to know if it can be run in that machine. If it is possible to do this without a major code rewrite of the game, where should I start? I have no experience on compiling anything for arm, only some experience in x86, so this might be a fool's errand, but I would like to give it a try nonetheless. If it is possible to do this and if some of you could help me in any way, that would be appreciated. On the other hand, if you think this is a really hard thing to even try to do, please feel free to tell me so I don't waste more of my time. Thanks in advance
  24. Would like to remind of a notable bug that persists in latest beta: Sometimes when you kill AI with a broadhead arrow, TDM will crash instantly or soon after their death. I'm currently replaying King of Diamonds and got a case of that, previously experienced during another FM with one of the dev versions. Here's the qconsole.log once more, hope it's enough to help track down the issue... the one line I believe is relevant: WARNING:idClipModel::FreeTraceModel: tried to free uncached trace model (index=0) qconsole.log
  25. If the "mission fails as soon as stealth score turns non-zero," that would not be good for ghost players. They might need to find out "how" they failed and experiment to avoid alerting guards. They might need to take those score points as a "bust". They might need to take those score points to complete an objective. Then, mission authors would need to encode exceptions into their missions, which would be a lot of work (if they decide to do it at all). However, part of what makes ghosting challenging and fun is when mission authors do not create their missions with ghosting in mind. Please see: Official Ghosting Rules: https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148523 Writing code for these rules would be a huge undertaking. Ghost Rules Discussion: https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148487 Creating an official mode could alienate these dedicated ghost players, because it would clash with what is considered ghosting in the community. Including the Stealth Stat Tool mod in the official release would be more useful. Or, making the audible alert states of guards quick and easy to recognize could help as well. For these reasons, I don't agree with an official "Ghost" mode. If the dev team were to do it, we should consult with @Klatremus so we get it 100% correct or not pursue it at all. (This ghosting bit should probably be in its own thread.)
