  1. The Layers manager is excellent and essential however I'm finding one aspect of it to be very clumsy. If you have all layers turned on and would like to start creating geometry on one particular layer there is no way in one click to select that particular layer as the "default" or "current creation layer" (the one with the Star). Currently the only way to get the layer you want to create geometry in to be "active" or "the one with the star" is to deselect all the others and the star sequentially cycles through (up or down) to an active layer. Would be very nice here if either 1) There was an initial third column that you could one click the star to. As in, you want a certain layer to be the current geometry creation layer, you select a button to set it in one click. 2) Instead of adding a "star column" you could "right-click" the current star/check mark column for any particular layer and that one click would set that layer as the "starred" layer. 3) Or add a new orthagonal right-click entry in the layer section that says something like "set default >" and then calls a list of all layers that you can select. That would be 2 clicks but still way better. As I mentioned above and I'm sure many of you are familiar with, the current implementation has you deselecting a bunch of layers just to move the star around to the layer you want. Clearly the work around is to create the geometry and then select it and --> move to layer however this gets tedious when you're creating a bunch of geometry on a particular layer or switching between two-three layers and it would be very nice to just select the layer you want to be starred default creation layer. Is this in the works already for DR or is there a simple way to perform this?
  2. DR just started refusing to load today. Every time it gets to "initializing module xml registry", it crashes. The log file has nothing useful in it that I can see: Any ideas?

I suppose making a campaign as an individual and building for Thief Gold go hand & hand. You need to be pretty obsessed to do either. XD

I'm just very happy to see how much work still goes on with the original Thief games. Good mods = long life after release!

  6. Hey, I have something in mind, and I find myself wanting an AI character that is dark, supernatural (magish in power), who could be an evil influence in the empire. We don't really have any character like that in the game, and I think it'd add an interesting twist to story telling. So I was wondering if anyone has fleshed one out that's available?
  7. Working on my own game was one of my biggest goals since I had started modding. I'd tinkered with many different engines, from id Tech 1 to Unreal Engine 4. About one year ago I wrote a design document for a slasher/rpg game with stealth elements and worked on it off and on since then. At first I wanted to develop it on Darkplaces (fork of id Tech 1), but then I moved to Storm Engine 2 (fork of id Tech 4 BFG). Coming from Half-Life modding and then older engines, working with numerous separate software, building levels with either brushes or models (or both) and having everything easily accessible feels much more natural for me than being able to do things only through an all-in-one editor. Sure it's convenient to have everything available in just one piece of software, but I prefer simpler interfaces designed for specific tasks. Back to the point, a lot of game mechanics suitable for my project is already in the Dark Mod engine: Excellent stealth mechanics.Stim-response system.Greatly improved AI.Climbing.Item manipulation.Readables.Grid based inventory.Interesting combat system.Porting it all to other forks would take much more time than developing on the engine that is already quite advanced, and which would get a huge boost with release of 2.06 stable version, so it seems to be a great base for my project. There are several things that I'd like to know first: TDM is mission-based, is level transition functionality still there or does it have to be brought back? What are the base assets required by the engine to run at all? Are they the same as for GPL id Tech 4? Would I be allowed to use base entity .defs and scripts from TDM? Not everything, but most of the world building entities. Would I be allowed to use TDM shaders as well? The aim is to release a completely free, open-source game. This is a hobbyist, one-man-team non-commercial project, and I'd want to get to working on assets as fast as possible (once I'll finish my FM). All things possibly taken from TDM would be referenced, and any help from the community will be appreciated.
  8. I've just reinstalled Win8 again after getting my sound card swapped for a supported one and I noticed something cool. After installing DR I went into the nV control panel to change the " threaded optomization" setting and found there was already a setting in there :-) 1. is the DR installer doing this..? or 2. is someone at nVidia a Darkradiant/Darkmod fan..?
  9. These videos were recorded around June 2011, and linked to the private "novice campaign" forum. Now they are available for everybody! Mostly covers basic brush-work and getting around some of the more common tools in Dark Radiant in the format of building a 12 sided tower. http://youtu.be/mDJqeCod0qQ http://youtu.be/U7BZupigomU
  10. A Dark Mod deathmatch mission would be interesting. Imagine it, you're dropped into an arena and you can spawn different characters via pressing buttons on the wall. They fight each other (and you) There were missions like this for Thief 1 and 2...

Honestly this would be a good standalone project on something like UE4. D3 had limited network support but wasn't great even in it's heyday.

    3. Epifire

      Epifire

Two important things to note are...

A: No need to code extensive NPC stealth interaction since it would be purely player based.

B: Project (light based) stealth could try and harness strict visibility based stealth. Since players will require clear line of sight, "fake darkness" really would have no place there. You really would need straight black in the darkest corners.

Almost done with arena map. thieves are on player side; mages, pagans and moors on elemental team - so you have 4 sides: monster, townsfolk, thieves, exotic. It crashes sometimes when you have about 20 creatures, but I guess there must be such price.

  12. I'm wondering if anyone ever checks new posts in the Fan Missions Forums? I've posted 4 questions asking for help for 4 different missions that I can't finish because I"m stuck, and I don't get any help. I posted a question this morning so I don't expect an answer right away for that one. Its frustrating because I would like to finish them. I've read through the posts for each mission and I'm not getting anything from them. If there's someone who could help me I'd really appreciate it. Thanks I guess I'm spoiled from the TTLG forums.

  14. I reinstalled my computer and so DR 1.7. Now if I load a map it needs approx. 0.5 seconds per Primitive to load, so it would takes days to load my map again. I started a new map for the test and the viewports are hanging and stocking very often. I used "disable win7 design" in the .exe and in the options menu of Dark Radiant. I also checked "update viewports on cam movement". What the heck..?! There has nothing changed since the reinstall. I use the same OS, the same GPU driver, damnit...
  15. Hello! I'm new to the forums, and not sure if I should post this topic in this section... I'm interested in porting some of gameplay mechanics from The Dark Mod to Storm Engine 2 (or use as reference for recreating them) - namely AI improvements, movement, grabbing and manipulating objects, and combat. I already checked wiki and downloaded sources, but it would be much quicker if someone could point me in some direction or which files I'll need to modify. This is for general tinkering with code and building project prototypes. I already have minimal base assets required to load a level (minimum requirements for engine to launch at all was provided by developer, but building on that still took a while). While I'm at development side of things - after getting through some fan missions, I'll most likely make my own. I really love Thief series and The Dark Mod and appreciate the effort you put into this game!
  16. Hi all, me again Now that I've learned how to take screenies on DM (thanks to Aluminumhaste) I wanted to post one that I took but I got an error saying that the image ext that I used was not allowed in these forums, It was .jpg so I changed it to .png and I got the same error again. They're on Photobucket.
  17. Do you know of any legendary or famous treasures that could be used to make a homage treasure in The Dark Mod? My example here is "The Hope Diamond", a cursed jewel that seemed to kill whoever was the sole owner of it. Another treasure would be the pieces of art known as "Monaco Lisa", "Starry Night", and "The Scream".
  18. This past fortnight I made my first Dark Mod mission, and with some playtesting by myself I believe it's ready for beta testing. The performance is acceptable and the difficulty is just right on my end, but obviously, I'd like to see what an outsider perspective thinks of the mission. Post if you're interested and I can PM a link to the packaged FM (or I can just post a public link here if that's what authors usually do for beta testing). Thanks

  20. Have any of you ever heard of f.lux? It's a great Computer application that makes it so your monitor's brightness and light lowers down during night, so you won't see that "strong blue light" that is detrimental for our "Sleep Hygiene". I use it as I have issues with sleeping. Thing is...'f'lux' is a terrible pair with The Dark Mod. Windowed or Fullscreen, f'lux will just change the brightness of my monitor and not let TheDarkMod do it. Thanks to that, I see even "blackish gray" darker than the rest, which I don't want. So I was wondering, do you guys have any idea on how I can use f'lux with The Dark Mod? Maybe there's actually a way better program than f'lux when it comes to videogames? The only thing I can do is shut it down, but then I easily forget about it, which is normal as this is (almost) an "Install & Forget" program.
  21. Between these Dark Walls by Skacky Story: Things could potentially get messy tonight. I was on my way back home when some tough boys ambushed me. They weren't looking for money or anything, they just wanted to kill me right there in the street. Fortunately, I managed to run away unscathed, but these guys are still looking for me. I've managed to piece together something from rumours and hearsays; turns out Messer Beric, an usurer I've done jobs for in the past sold me out to Raputo, one of the City Wardens, in order to prove that he'll be loyal and pay his tributes. Apparently Beric's business collapsed with DeWall's demise, and now he seeks the protection of Raputo. Not to mention Beric's business was run right under Raputo's nose, but he was protected by DeWall at that time. In exchange for his 'good work', Beric received a priceless necklace as a reward, and keeps it stashed in his crumbling castle in Newmarket. Now is time for some sweet revenge; I am going to steal Beric's necklace and humiliate him; that'll teach him never to double-cross me. I should also steal some valuables along the way, just to show Raputo how I deal with his reckless threats. Raputo doesn't like independents operating within his turf, so I'll make sure to plunder the neighbourhood. I got to be careful, though. With DeWall's downfall, The City became more dangerous than ever. Thugs and assassins are on the loose in the dark, and lawmen and Hammerites prowl the streets in search of heretics and criminals alike. Cragscleft has never been so full. Download links: - Mediafire - Thiefmissions - Southqaurter Notes: Please note that due to how TG behaves with New Dark, Darkloader incorrectly identifies this FM as a T2 mission. Follow these steps if you want to load the FM with Darkloader: Install the FM in your FM archive directory as usual. Launch Darkloader and select the FM, but don't launch the mission! Instead, close Darkloader once the FM is selected and shows the T2 gear icon. In your Darkloader directory, open the file named darkloader.ini Search for darkwalls, it should be at the very end of the file. Replace the line type=2 with type=1. Save and close the file. Launch Darkloader again and the FM should appear as a TG FM with the glorious Pagan eye! You're now ready to creep through the dark and gloomy cityscape of Newmarket! Misc: For obvious reasons, it is recommended you play this FM in dark conditions. This is a major part of the experience. Given that this FM has a strong focus on verticality, keep one or two rope arrows with you at all times. Three additional rope arrows can be found on all difficulty levels. Explore, explore, explore and see where the twisted rooftops of Newmarket take you. Make sure to read everything you come across, hints and plot elements may be written somewhere. Higher difficulty means less starting gear, less equipment to be found, a higher loot goal and more opponents. The main objective remains the same. It is possible to Ghost this mission and get all the loot while doing so. Comments: Yet again Skacky has captured the old skewl feel of thief we all know and love, Have fun
