  1. I was just getting the itch to play The Dark Mod again after a while. Perfect timing. Thank you.
  2. Might this not be better suited to https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/forum/58-tdm-tech-support/ or failing that make the text collapsable.

  4. A Winter's Tale By: Bikerdude "One of the few pleasures I have as a man of the thieving profession is to return to my old home town for the holidays and relax in the company of friends and relatives. But a local lord has been going out of his way to making the lives of the locals a miserable." Notes: - TDM 2.12 or later is REQUIRED to play this mission. - This is my entry for the speedbuilding jam. - This FM should play on the vast majority of systems. I have perf tweaked this map with low end players in-mind. And have moved the globale fog/moon lights to the ‘ better’ LOD level. - min recommended spec (as per beta testing) Intel Core i7(3rd gen), nvidia 1030 4gb (GDDR5), will get you 60fps inside and 45fps outside. - Various areas will look better with shadow maps enabled (SoftShadows set to medium/high, Shadows Softness set to zero and LOD set to 'better'), at the possible expense of performance depending on your system specs. - this mission continues the imperial theme, with this being a border town slightly further out from the main imperial lands than Brouften. - build time roughly 130hrs. Download Link: - (v1.4) - https://discord.com/channels/679083115519410186/1310012992867405855/1310022631415746632 v1.4 changes: I have been tweaking the LOD levels through-out the map - - Snow fall has been moved to LOD low/normal. - world fog moved to LOD better. - fireplace grills to LOD better. - world moonlight moved to LOD high. Other tweaks - - reduced light counts in all the fireplaces. - reduced the length of the looping menu video background. - Some new assets Gameplay: - added more ways for the player to get around. - tweaked existing routes to make some easier or more of a challenge. - and added an additional option objective. Credits: Special thanks go to - - Nbhor1more, flashing out the briefing and creation of readables. - Amadeus, Help w/custom objectives, script work, proof reading, mission design & testing. - Dragofer, for custom scripts and script work for the main objective. - Baal, for additional tweaking of the main objective and script work,. - Beta testers: Amadeus, Nbhor1more, Mat99, DavyJones, S1lverwolf, Baal & Dragofer. - Freesound.org, for ambient tracks, further details in sndshd file. 5. Bikerdude makes some of the best maps for The Dark Mod. They're usually a little bit challenging, but not unreasonably so. I would also recommend Business as Usual for anyone who enjoyed this map.

Blackheart Manor is Dram's WIP and we haven't heard from Dram in a while (have we?). There was hype for it even before the game was out, back in 2009. I did a little reading up and it was already being called the Duke Nukem Forever of TDM in 2010.

I haven't been following it, but I can see that that video is on biker's account & it'd make sense if he said he'd take it on, since he likes to take on projects that seem to be abandoned.

    3. datiswous

So I guess it could be that a large part of that fm is actually made by Dram?

    4. demagogue

I'd think a large part is made by Dram, but I imagine the part biker featured in his video was his own contribution ... just because it makes sense he'd make a video featuring that. Really I've never followed it that closely to know what's going on, so don't quote me on anything. =V

  6. Ok. 2 scolars are absent due to illness, so I got time to fill up until the next one arrives. Which stealth games do you know? Here are my favorite stealth- and stealth-action games: Some of them are not stealth only but leave it up to the players choice to play it that way. Thief 1 / 2 / 3 The Dark Mod System shock 1 / 2 Assassins creed 1 / 2 / BH Splinter Cell Oblivion Skyrim Far cry 3 crysis 1 / 2 / 3 Stealth Bastard Monaco: Whats yours is mine Announced: Thi4f Middle-earth: shadow of mordor (in development) Routine (in development) Alien isolation (in development) Any more suggestions ?
  7. imported a model, its see through and it isn't obvious to me why it is that way (model has been cut up for better visualization of the problem) it likely isn't vertex normal related since all of the outside is blue and the model looks fine in dark radiant, I can provide more information about the models and things if it is needed
  8. I went ahead and tried triangulating and changing my export options to no avail, I did switch from lwo to ase but that didn't change either, I tried doing the obj export thing but for some reason objs werent showing up in dark radiant and I didnt find much info on objs on the wiki so I did the only other trouble shooting method I could think of and imported in the utah teapot model from the university of stanford's computer graphics website and its see through aswell, not sure what this would imply though other than the source of the issue not being the models themselves maybe the way I have my exporter setup is wrong?
  9. Hi all, I've been experimenting with ways to discourage the player from reloading too often (health and equipment back + stealth regained at the press of a button is tempting!), the result so far is this mod intended for the niche of players who enjoy the extra tension/challenge from limited saves. ------------------- Experiment #1 - Dynamic save rooms mod: The rules are simple: The place where you first save the game at becomes a save room. Save room: In the style of Silent Hill, or the excellent thief-inspired Gloomwood, the save room is the only place you're allowed to save at. A calling card will be placed on the floor to mark the save room. After finding ~60% of the map's loot earn 1 free save, for emergencies, it does not create a save room but allows saving freely once. If the campaign has custom save rules this addon does nothing. Installation: Drop it in the main 'The Dark Mod' folder. Download: z_addon_dsaveroom_v2.pk4 Mirror: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DENXHvQ6uOrf8T3I2eUb9WqoTr1G9Pnd/view?usp=sharing ------------------- Experiment #2 - Save-on-escape mod: Simple rules: You can only save after escaping from an enemy who was alerted and started an aggressive search or combat. (Once per enemy, after escaping can save once for 1 minute). Start with one free manual save to use anywhere for emergencies. It seems this system pretty much guarantees the player will engage with the gameplay consequences of mistakes. A negative trade-off I can think of is that since earning saves becomes gamified it may lead to strange gameplay such as purposefully alerting a guard to save, this could be considered "gaming the system" but I think it may not be that bad. It even probably encourages full ghosting without knocking out all enemies, to have a few "walking save points" on the map. Gotta test! Installation: Drop it in the main 'The Dark Mod' folder, remove z_addon_dsaveroom_v2 if you had downloaded it previously. Download: z_addon_alertsave.pk4 Mirror: https://drive.google.com/file/d/14ITlUxtDH7cQYqvXlqsTwOFjGSTciGIW/view?usp=sharing ------------------- Chances are there's a lot of tuning that should be done and obviously it may make some missions much harder than others, if you play it please let me know how it worked out! v2 Changes: -Prevented calling card from being pushed around -Added a free save, earned from looting, to help with bigger maps and unexpected curve-balls. -Reduced save room size a bit Previous versions: v1: z_addon_dsaveroom.pk4
  10. Happy 15th Anniversary to The Dark Mod! As of October 17th. 2024, 15 years have passed since the TDM 1.0 release! In that time, we evolved to most or all of the features that players were asking for since the concept of TDM was first mooted in the TTLG forums in late 2004. Campaign Support, Soft Shadows, EFX Reverb, Multi-Core Rendering, Uncapped FPS, Ambient Occlusion, Subtitles, are among the roster of perennial requested things that have been brought to life by the development team in addition to the core Thief 1 \ 2 game-play items like the Lightgem, Rope Arrows, Swim-able water, lock-picking and ( of course ) advanced AI enemies. To commemorate this occasion, please join us in celebrating the Release of 5 missions for our 15th Anniversary Contest! . The Imperial Sword Bikerdude was encouraged to reclaim an abandoned version of his older mission and rework it into a new one. Now the formerly lost work is a glorious new experience with scripted dialog, special events, and a decayed imperial cityscape! . The Wizard’s Treasure Thebigh has made yet another bite-sized mission with a focus on quality game-play and challenge. The mission is extra impressive for the scope and visuals achieved since his decision to join the contest was fairly late compared to other entrants. . You Only Fly Thrice DeTeEff has continued his progression of high quality and complex releases. Another relative late comer to the contest, this mission is a tour-de-force of excellent game-play ideas and is quite handsome with excellent volumetric lighting and modular asset usage. . Volta 3: Gemcutter Kingsal has decided to release his long awaited Volta Series sequel to be included in the contest. DO NOT MISS THIS MISSION! . Pinnacle: A Test of Talents UncertainTitle and TwilitWitch decided to risk their first mission release to be included in the contest roster. The use of both modular assets and many custom models give this mission a familiar yet refreshing visual appeal. . Please join the celebration and vote in the forum threads for each respective mission based on their contest criteria ( Game-play, Story, Visuals ). . . The Dark Mod 2.13 “Developer Build” The Dark Mod 2.13 is still a few months away from release but we wanted to highlight the fact that a few more of the long requested changes have been added in the upcoming release! . Parallax Occlusion Mapping! In the above video, you can see a that TDM has finally incorporated the long requested effect. This wont be applied to all textures since there may be some problems with visual anomalies and performance but we are already preparing for a future where lots of textures use this new and more three dimensional surface effect. Better AI sight! While the AI have always been good at seeing the player due to the lightgem ( sometimes “too good” so we had to nerf their sight ), AI have had various challenges seeing things like bodies, missing objects, opened doors, weapons, blood, etc. This is because it is not practical to give all entities \ objects their own lightgem. Instead we have used very simple math to represent lights which don’t match shadow and light textures. In 2.13 a new sampling approach aims to improve this so that AI can better see ( or not see ) items and bodies in a way that better matches the actual lighting in the mission. Mission Search! There is now a search window where you can specify the mission author or title to help you find your preferred mission rather than scrolling through over 170 missions. You can also change how mission titles are rendered with either the original title or the title with prefix words like “A, The” moved to the end. Improved Training Mission! The Training Mission has been upgraded to include a Vine Arrow tutorial, a Slow Match tutorial, EFX Reverb, Volumetric Lights, and some performance optimizations! Translation Packs! Between TDM 1.06 and 2.0 Tels and the translating community started translating many missions but these translations required that the original mission be altered in a way that made it harder for the mission authors to revise. The meant that translation packs were in limbo being hosted by 3rd party sites \ forums along with their orphaned old missions. The translators over at the Darkfate forums came up with an solution by including not only the translation strings in the translation pack but also the altered map files, GUI defs, etc that had translation work done to them. This would leave the original mission untouched but allow translation packs to override some parts. We have gone through the old archive of these translations and have reworked them to work with the latest version of TDM (and the associated missions). Most of the translations are Russian ( due to the continued work of the Darkfate people ) but many of the early TDM missions also have German, Italian, French, etc translations too. Subtitles! Datiswous has been creating story subtitles for many of the existing missions in the TDM mission database. Most authors have incorporated these into their official releases, otherwise players can still add them to the FM folder. . Hidden Hands: Blood and Metal Campaign Just before the 15th anniversary entries were starting to arrive, JackFarmer released an enormous 5 mission campaign that continues his well regarded “Hidden Hands” series!

  11. Double topic. See also topic: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22754-thief-vr-legacy-of-shadow-announcement/
  12. i am having a hard time searching for specific keyword in bug tracker so i decided to wade into google search and found similar thread with similar issue : https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/13723-key-drop-melee-animation-glitch/
  13. Yeah, Quake influenced the Dark Engine. I read some interviews over the years where some Thief designers talked about that. In a way it made the Doom 3 engine feel like a distant cousin to the Dark Engine. Probably why The Dark Mod felt so Thief like from the earliest days. The Doom 3 engine, having shared old Quake foundations, still had that feel.
  14. Bit of a shot in the dark but you wouldn't have any tips on doing it in Unity anyway, would ya? Pretending performance isn't an issue right now, I'm trying to bash something like this together myself but I'm running into the issue: I'm still learning and I'm having a hard time working out exactly what I need to do. Don't suppose you've got your attempt laying around somewhere handy to look at.
  15. This is my second time opening Dark Radiant in another computer. When i open it i see this: ( i don't know why the image appears blurry here ) So far i see the Grid and the Camera are not scaling well. Notice that i am using fractional scaling in Ubuntu (Resolution: 2560x1440 - Scale: 150% - Refresh Rate: 165.00 Hz) System info attached system_info.txt
  16. Or, just get in contact with the owners of the IP and ask them since just because an IP lawyer in one jurisdiction says it would be okay, doesn't mean it would be okay globally. There are several packs out there of scripts/definition files which are licenced under free licences (CC0 and WTFPL mostly) and claim their freedom by recreating them using "clean-room way". In fact, I used them in getting TDM running with mostly free licenced files by selectively choosing which had clearly been written from scratch albeit with reference to the originals, and which were just direct copy and paste with claimed free licences (I didn't use them). Then it was a case of finding/replacing the core engine textures, sounds, etc. the engine required to launch with free alternatives (again checking the packs since some were just copied direct from the game files and claiming to be free). In the end, the only non-free licenced files that were still required were those from TDM itself. The result of this TDM version is the screenshot I posted some posts ago here: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22346-libre-version-of-tdm/page/3/#findComment-500642 However, you will notice the giant cursor on the screen in the screenshot, why? because the only reference to hiding the cursor is within the UI files which come under the game eula, so I didn't add in the command to hide it in game. In the case of the script/def files, this "clean-room" approach has stood up in a court of law when I looked online, however you wouldn't really want to end up being in the position of ending up in court defending yourself in the first place. The flaw in the def/scripts that were recreated are that they all wrote their files using the originals as reference. So if the originals are under the game eula, and if the information contained is in some way protected, then all these "clean-room" files revert to the original game eula, as the authors didn't have the right to change the licence. I believe (with a pinch of salt )that if the core scripts/files were made GPL by idSoftware/Microsoft then as files based off of or using them as parents (basically all TDM scripts/defs as far as I can make out) then all of the TDM scripts and def files would automatically become GPL as their authors could also not claim their work was NC-BY since it was then based on GPL work.
  17. So I'm stuck at home with a sprained ankle with sod all to do but sit in front of the computer all day. So I'm looking through my CD/DVD/computer game collection for something to do and I find this little beauty. I bought it a year ago and I couldn't get it to work on my modern system. I said I'd sort it out later and put it on a shelf and forgot all about it. After a bit of tweaking I got it working this morning and have been playing it all day. Wow! The guys who made this really love Thief. You have glowing mushrooms, rope arrows, a thiefs highway (seriously!) and the protagonist coming out with Garrett quoutes "inside at last". I managed to get to level 4 using a combination of stealth and hack n slash but when I got to level 5 I had enough points to max out on stealth so it's finally turned in to my cup of tea. This is really quite fun. I've avoided using any spells in case I want to play this again so I can be a mage isntead of an assassin. Is there any other Dark Messiah fans around here?

Since I didn't know what else Grayman had planned, I made up my own story from the end of the briefing. The voice actors did an incredible job. Everyone I asked immediately agreed to complete this work of Grayman. This has now led to a fabulous eight voice actors taking part in this mission - from England, Ireland, Canada and the USA. ============================================================== Let's raise our glasses in Grayman's honor. Otherwise I wish you all happy holidays. Take care of yourself, your loved ones, and all of your friends.
  19. Mandrasola is a small sized map in which aspiring thief Thomas Porter steals some herbal products from a smuggler. The mission was created by me, Sotha and I wish to thank Bikerdude, BrokenArts and Ocn for playtesting and voice acting. Thanks goes naturally to everyone contributing and making TDM possible. This mission occurs chronologically before the Knighton's Manor, making it the first mission in the Thomas Porter series. Events in chronological order are: Mandrasola, The Knighton's Manor, The Beleaguered Fence, The Glenham Tower and The Transaction. The winter came early and suddenly this year. Weeks of strong blizzards and extremely harsh cold weather hit Bridgeport hard. With the seas completely frozen, a rare occurence indeed, most of the City harbor commerce has stopped completely. Vessels are stuck in the ice and no ship can leave or enter the City, resulting in the availability imported goods declining and their prices skyrocketing. One of these imported items is Mandrasola, a rare herbal product, which is imported overseas from the far southern continents. Mandrasola has its uses in alchemical cures and poisons, but mostly this substance is used for its narcotic qualities by commoners and even the nobility. The problem with Mandrasola is that excessive use is extremely addicting and the withdrawal effects are most grievious. Many are utterly incapable of stopping using Mandrasola and are transformed into quivering human ruins if they do no get their daily dose. And now this expensive and rare substance is running out from the whole City. Me and my fence, Lark Butternose, would love to grab this monopoly to ourselves: selling the last few doses in the City would probably be worth a fortune. According to Lark's sources, there remains only one smuggling lord who still has Mandrasola in stock. The problem is that this individual maintains an exclusive clandestine operation and only supplies a few nobles. Despite our best information gathering efforts we couldn't learn who the smuggler is and where he or she operates. Luckily we have an alternate plan. While searching for Mandrasola related information, we learned that a noblewoman called Lady Ludmilla is addicted to the substance and has paid high prices for small amounts of it. We also know that she has visited frequently someone in the Tanner's Ward waterfront, and since she goes to the area personally we believe she is visiting the smuggler. The plan is simple: I must monitor Ludmilla's most likely entryway to the Waterfront and then follow her to the smugglers hideout. I'd better be very careful around Ludmilla. She must not realise I'm following her or she probably won't lead me to her dealer. Hurting her is also out of the question. After she leads me to the smuggler's hideout, I can take my time to break in carefully and steal all the Mandrasola I can find. While I'm there it wouldn't be a bad idea to grab some loose valuables as well. I've now waited in the blistering cold for a few hours already. Looks like there are a few city watch patrols in the area to complicate matters... I think I heard a womans voice beyond the north gate. That must be lady Ludmilla, I haven't seen many ladies in these parts. I'd better get ready.. Links: Use the ingame downloader to get it. WARNING! Someone always fails to use spoiler tags. I do not recommend reading any further until you've played the mission.

  22. As a mission author I always give the player the chance to BJ guards unconscious in dark corners. Flashing them beforehand is just more versatility for the toolkit imo.
  23. so this bug has a term , it's called "object elevatoring". the same thing also happened to the dark engine, this discussion was on ttlg as well. Now I wonder what would happen if all game engines had “easter eggs” like this and the way to trigger them is left to the player.
