  5. @datiswous, made that correction fm_test.subs --> fm_conversations.subs @stgatilov, about srt naming and file location, would you be OK with the following edit? New/changed stuff in italics: srt command is followed by paths to a sound sample and its .srt file, typically with matching filenames. An .srt file is usually placed either with its sound file or in a "subtitles" folder. The .srt file format is described e.g. [1]. The file must be in engine-native encoding (internationalization is not supported yet anyway) and have no BOM mark. It contains a sequence of text messages to show during the sound sample, each with start and end timestamps within the sample's timeline. It is recommended to use common software to create .srt files for sound samples, instead of writing them manually. This way is more flexible but more complicated, and it is only necessary for long sounds, for instance sound sample of a briefing video. It's a simple enough standard that it can be shown as an short example, demonstrating that subtitle segments can have time gaps between them. And the example can show correct TDM usage, without requiring a trip off-site and picking through features that TDM doesn't support. Specifically, the example shows how to define two lines by direct entry, rather than using unsupported message location tags (X1, Y1, etc.). And skips other unavailable SRT font markups like italics, mentioned in the wikipedia description. The example would also show the TDM-specific path treatment. The example could be inserted before the sentence "It is recommended to use common software...."
  6. Oh what did I miss? I see there's a test map but what do I need to revisit? Are there any problems with my footstep sounds in this map?
  7. The problem with a "theme" system (I think) is that it's forcing the assets into categories they may not fit well into or that don't make sense; or I mean it's forcing the mapper to think in terms of discrete "categories" at all, when that may not be most effective. Whereas a tagging system doesn't impose any "system"... Tags are completely open-ended, and could be at any level of scale or heirarchy -- you could have: bathroom-furniture, made-of-wood, Victorian, X-author's set, good for triggers, items for a bookshelf, architectural, magic, etc, etc... as tags, but not all of those categories make sense as discrete themes with other co-themes at the same level. I guess this is a longwinded say tagging more intuitively lets you target what you want without imposing a structure you have to wedge it into ... just a totally open field of tags from any walk of life. Edit: This is not to say tags should be arbitrarily specific. There should be tags of general categories too of course; even these will be the backbone of the system. But the whole point is tagging allows multiple layers, so you can use the general category tags to start your search, then ween it down with increasingly specific tag sets, whatever is best for the asset set. Some asset sets, or especially combinations, will categorize differently than others, and tagging is ok with that. Edit2: The image I have in my mind anyway is like a photo-collection tagged collection. There's an opening page with a tag cloud with the most common basic tags (general category) the largest in size and minor ones smaller, which you click on and then you get a browser with that set of textures. Then on the left hand bar will be all the tag-combinations within that set (other tags textures in the set are carrying; then in parentheses maybe the number of AND-textures it'd filter down to / OR-new textures they'd bring in), the major tags again larger or highlighted somehow, which if you click one of those new tags, it'd filter the browser to show the AND set. And maybe there's also an option so you could have an OR set and get both (or even select a new OR set from the full tag cloud), which adds new textures into the browser window, and also new sets of tags in the left-bar (the new tags carried by one or more textures in the new set). Also there's a place you could back out of a tag to cut that subset out. So you could open up & winnow down the set as you desire. It ends up a kind of way to browse through the whole collection by navigating through tag AND/OR combinations. Also there's a search bar where you could type in a tag at any time also.
  8. Oh boy am I in Trouble...running Windows 7 64bit. I have the TDM running correctly and have been enjoying the brilliant fm's....so I thought I'd install the editor and take the plunge. I copied my TDM folder and renamed it so as not to muck up the original, I tested the copy and it worked fine on some fm's, I then downloaded the 64 bit Radient installer and installed it into the renamed folder...when I double click on the Radient editor I get "Dark Radient cant start MSVCR120.dll missing". I googled around and found a fix but I still get the error..VisualC++ thingy is uptodate and everything else is running quite happily, obviously I have done something wrong. Help please, Thank you.
  9. Congratulations on the release. Downloading now. :D

  14. Hi. I would welcome some help on how I get into I am running v1.0, but have not had problems with it.
  15. Stone 24pt Font Upgrade, June 20, 2024 Final Release With this third and (I hope) final update, Stone 24pt becomes TDM's only font+size that fully provides all 256 characters defined in the TDM custom character map. This last update concludes adding the more difficult characters, chiefly symbols, Icelandic, and remaining accented letters. Plus general overall tweaks to improve character rendering and spacing (as evaluated with testSubtitlesANSI), while preserving important metrics, e.g., xSkip of ASCII alphanumerics. Unwanted overlapping boundaries were eliminated, and things made more consistent. As one example, the metrics for the lower-case "e", and accented characters based on it, were adjusted a year ago to suppress stray marks, but at the expense of clipping the glyphs, making them less stylish. With the added insight now provided by datBounds visualization, it was possible to restore the style while keeping the stray marks away. In summary - 16 new glyphs were created. 64 existing characters got tweaks. These were mostly affecting the .dat, but some glyphs were moved in the bitmap (a little or a lot) to solve various problems. Download: 2024 June 20 Stone 24 Final Font Update.zip As with the prior interim releases, this download is made up of - .dat and 2 .dds files, for distribution/game inclusion .ref [with changes annotated] and .xcf [master source GIMP project, including datBounds layers] The hand-annotations in the .ref file are neither absolutely conclusive, nor necessary to preserve for future work. You may generate a fresh .ref without them from the .dat file by using refont. Enumeration of Changes: There will be some follow-on work, e.g., expressed earlier in this thread in a bugtracker entry.
  16. Hi! Welcome to this forum. Like many others who would like to compile TDM for their favourite Linux Distro: We advice to look for sollutions or do it yourself (using some guides), let us know how you did it and where you got stuck. Or Dont compile the code and just try the binaries. This by downloading the tdm installer binary (from the website or your packagemanager) and use it to download the game files. (Or downloading old standalone package from moddb) Installation guide: https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Installer_and_Manual_Installation Compiling Guide: https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=The_Dark_Mod_-_Compilation_Guide After reading and following the guides, do a forum and google search and then try again. For example, I found a TDM on nixos issue on github: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/98936
  17. So updated to 2.05 pre1 and I am seeing VC++ dll error - Now this is interesting because GoG Galaxy also uses VC++ 2015 and when I try to run that I get the same error. The issue is either whole or partly todo with the fact I am running windows 8.1, and I am seeing a number of issue with this bloody OS over win7 - this being the latest. I have reinstalled VC+ 2015 x64 and it dosent fix this issue, any idea's..?
  18. This is with the original mission.tdminfo and this is with it deleted As an aside - if a mission is installed any updates to that mission don't appear in the downloader list
  19. For free ambience tracks it's as Freky said: you look around on the internet for tracks with the appropriate license to be included in your FM. Fortunately, you likely don't even need to bother doing this as a beginner as there's an entire "Music & SFX" section of the forums full of good ambient tracks for you to use if the stock tracks do not meet your fancy. You might also be interested in Orbweaver's "Dark Ambients", which come with a sndshd file already written for you.
  20. I would agree with @snatcher, and I think it was the original idea. Speech level is for people who hear sounds well, but don't understand spoken English well (like me), especially if it is stylized (e.g. drunk). Effect level is something even more widespread. It might be useful in the distant future for people who have problems with hearing or just lack speakers/headphones today for whatever reason. I heavily doubt we'll be able to support this case properly, but added this level early anyway. For instance, "Heyyah!" should most likely be on Effect level. Story level was added as default for TDM veterans who also hear well but don't understand English well (like me). I don't want to see these "I've got him cornered here!" and "Just you wait!" all the time, it's enough that I hear them all the time Whether speech is dangerous or not does not matter. If some speech has angry tone instead of quiet, then you can add exclamation mark to carry this information (useful in case player has hearing problems). But whether guards are just talking calm or already want to hang player up --- that he should understand himself by reading the text and listening to intonation. Actually, I don't like the idea of giving any visual difference between Story and Speech for this exact reason. We use subtitles to help player understand English, not to help him draw correct conclusions from it. He should be able to understand himself whether some text is important for his quest or interesting, or not.
  21. For the FM? For beta 1 it's here: https://drive.proton.me/urls/H1QBB04GA0#oBZTb1CmVFQb I've already done around 100 fixes though, so you might want to wait for beta 2 which should be ready in a couple of days hopefully. All links are in the first post of the beta thread here: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22439-the-lieutenant-3-foreign-affairs-beta-testing/
  22. I believe you can look in tdm_installer logs or game console (at least on the latest dev build) to see which URL is used. I have just returned from vacation in Turkey, and suffered from abysmally slow internet there. It took me several days to download 10 MB installer for a program, because download speed was 50 KB/s and the download was frequently stopped (I use Firefox). Perhaps hotel managers do it intentionally so that people give up on the virtual world, go to the beach and rest better This forum was very slow to load. Posts were loaded almost one by one. I had to refresh some pages 5+ times (worse for longer threads) because loading process often stopped before being finished. Updating gmail and browsing other sites was not much better actually. On the last days there, I decided to try tdm_installer to see how it behaves in such conditions. I did not attempt clean install because it would obviously take longer than my vacation, but I did some 50-80 MB updates. I could not even imagine internet could be so bad! HTTP requests were dropped frequently (timeout due to effective download speed averaged for the last 10 seconds dropping lower than 1 KB/s). Once timeout happened during downloading tdm_installer.ini (8714 bytes text file). I did some improvements to make installer more stable, but it still managed to stop with error: it failed to download 4 KB piece of a file two times in a row! I have also noticed that mirrors behave differently. Cabalistic's mirror is Germany was the most reliable for me, and the main TDM server in Canada was the worst one. Note that the main TDM server is not used for FM or game downloads. However, it is solely used to obtain some "trusted" files: installer exe, .ini file and 2 MB manifest. It turned out that downloading 2 MB manifest from the main server was the hardest challenge for the installer. I can speculate that Canada is on the farthest end from Turkey in terms of connectivity. Which is interesting because physical distance from Novosibirsk to Canada is about the same as the physical distance from Turkey to Canada, and for me all our mirrors and the main server work perfectly well and fast. Note that in-game download is much less reliable than tdm_installer, because it can only download whole FM in single curl request, it does not try to break it into smaller pieces and retry. Resumable downloads are not supported neither by tdm_installer nor by in-game downloader: that would be a mess to implement and maintain. For me, the conclusion is: we need to support alternative ways of downloading, because no matter what we try, there would be people who cannot use our custom downloaders. For missions it is already available: you can download mission from mirror by direct link on mission database on website. For the game itself, I guess we need to create and seed torrent for the most recent stable version.
  23. Extensive customization options are appropriate during the pre-release testing or early roll out of a new feature. The people testing the feature can't know yet what configuration will work best for them, much less the people making the patch. My expectation is that by the time you have to make a final decision about including this patch in the next official update of TDM, there will be a rough consensus about the optimal parameters for the new mechanics, and you will only need one toggle for the new behavior. Or, preferably, there would be no need for an option at all if we can only get over our OCD about preserving arbitrary semantic grouping in our key-bind allocations; and embrace a superior control scheme that's not designed around highlighting an old gimmick feature whose trendiness expired with the Half-Life 2 era of FPS. But that's a pipe dream. Maybe instead we can just all agree that the general>gameplay options are getting a bit crowded. Perhaps we could split some of them off into an "appearance" or "accessibility" tag. As more people make their own mods and we modernize our accessibility options it is going to become a problem regardless. Best to get ahead of it. I agree, and that is one of TDM's strengths. It borrows and combines many of the best features from the three beloved Thief games, but it also gives FM creators tools to expand their creative vision in new directions. To some Thief purists that will never be an enticing proposition. But I don't see this feature as throwing a bone to those Thief players specifically, but just player in general who are bouncing off our game because it deviates from some genre conventions for no obvious reason, which makes them think this is an unpolished product. It is true that Thief was what set these conventions, and (shockingly/s) it is mostly Thief players who are interested enough in TDM to give it a try... but our responsibility to address these problems (if we can) is the same as if AMD or Linux players were having technical problems with TDM. They are people who we want to be part of our community because we never know if one of them might make the next FM like Iris, or do something crazy-innovative with TDM that we can't even imagine!
  24. I referred to my work in the bugtracker mainly as a way to show that I have good intentions. Not that I don't make mistakes. I do. Thank you for providing feedback about 0006540 (feedback which may also then apply to 0006542). I was not aware that Z-fighting (if that is the culprit) was mission specific. I thought it, similar to 0006361, was related to coding or the models. Had I known it was mission specific I would not have logged it in the bugtracker. Feel free to enter them where they better belong (in the forum?), add a comment in the bugtracker with a URL to the new location to those places and then close the issues so that I and others can see what is the proper way to work. I really am trying to do the right thing and I do appreciate your feedback. The wiki article Reporting Problem describes how to report a problem, but is there documentation on where different problems shall be reported or how to work in the bugtracker? I'd be happy to read it and follow such a guideline. I have looked for it but cannot find it. This is also something I'd be willing to document on the wiki if it does not exist, or link to it if it does exist so that others can easily find it. It is more effective and less friction to write down what is the right way to work rather than correcting someone on a case-by-case basis when they do something wrong but that they didn't know was wrong. I actually had a private conversation about this with another forum member a few months back and they suggested you had a good grasp of the bugtracker workflow. Maybe you'd be willing to write something down? If you want I can give feedback and ask for clarifications and point out aspects that a new user may want to know. I have a firm grasp of Mantis as a system, but practical use of it may differ between organizations. The thing is that other than finding, reproducing, reporting and organizing defects, I think one of my strong points is documentation of products and workflows. I want to branch out from there, but I also want to document missing information along the way so that others who wonder the same things as I can easily find it.
