  1. It sounds like a good idea, but TDM has several interconnected services with a lot of data worth saving. You can put repository somewhere, but what about mantis bugtracker, invision forums, and mediawiki? The bugtracker, SVN, and forums are linking to each other a lot, so losing one of them would mean losing a lot of information about when, how and why something was done. Don't say that GitHub has issue tracker: it is very simplistic compared to mantis, and I bet it won't import all the mantis data in lossless way.
  2. I can't agree with this, IMO because of GOG many new gamers can play old games without the need for crazy fixes on their part or the need to be computer savy, because of GOG the original developers (or publishers) can still make some money on their old games, GOG helped developers knew how comercial viable their old IP's or genres of games still were, IMO that also helped fuel the kickstarter wave of remakes of old games like System Shock and others, because of GOG DRM is not thought to be has necessary has it once was and showed PC gamers weren't all just "pirates", because of GOG old IP's are returning, if not they would be pretty much dead, only to be experienced by a small nich of hardcore fans, many games even ones very old were never abandonware, in the sense that anyone could take the IP and do with it what they wanted, the IP owners add all rights over them and so no one wanted to mess with that mine field, that caused many games IP's to just be dead period and fans were losing hope of ever seeing a follow up to them, now they have new hope. And lastly GOG never killed the mod scene, anyone can still make mods for their old favorite games and know they will probably be experienced by new people.
  3. I dislike GOG for killing the abandonware scene and profiting from exploitation of dusty old crap and donations, like a cat charity shop that pockets all the cash to look after "the cats" which are their own cats and give a can of premium tuna for their mates every now and then. They even use the same exact same cracked .exe for Covert Action that we sorted fkn years ago. The only good thing about GOG is it saves sourcing a dodgy crack for the new titles, imho. No big loss - I forgot about the F2P thing. But you guys are in a bit of a bind with this one, with steamworks and trying to get onto a major platform, if you want to keep it as a free game... I can't think of a solution that doesn't involve you spending money to not break even that doesn't involve donations from, eg, kickstarter for incorporation and licensing, etc. Plus, you're gonna be in the same category as Clicker Heroes... and that makes it a tough decision on which F2P game I want to download... Have you tried itch.io or Humble Store? They get press fairly often in the rags.
  4. Open letter: Ban surveillance-based advertising Recently, the Norwegian Consumer Council published a report calling for a ban on surveillance-based ads. In solidarity, we the undersigned have sent the following letter on Wednesday, July 7th, to EU and US regulators to encourage them to take action during legislative sessions and any relevant privacy discussions. Surveillance-based advertising permeates the internet today, creating a number of highly problematic issues for both consumers and businesses. On June 23, a broad coalition of consumer rights organizations, civil rights groups, NGOs, as well as academics, researchers, privacy experts, and enthusiasts – all concerned individuals – called on regulators to stop the invasive and privacy-hostile practices related to surveillance-based advertising. In the EU, they urged regulators to consider a ban on surveillance-based advertising as a part of the Digital Services Act. In the U.S., they urged legislators to enact comprehensive privacy legislation. We are a group of businesses who write to you today to show our support to this initiative. We represent small, medium, and large businesses who all believe – and demonstrate on a daily basis – that it is possible to run profitable companies without exploiting the privacy of individuals. In addition to the clear privacy issues caused by surveillance-based advertising, it is also detrimental to the business landscape. In the surveillance-based advertising model, a few actors can obtain competitive advantages by collecting data from across websites and services and dominant platform actors can abuse their positions by giving preference to their own services. These practices seriously undermine competition and take revenue away from content creators. Anti-competitive behavior and effects serve to entrench dominant actors’ positions while complex supply chains and ineffective technologies lead to lost revenues for advertisers and publishers. It is also difficult for consumers to distinguish between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ actors in the digital sphere, which means that legitimate actors, amongst them many small and medium-sized enterprises, are directly affected by the actions of unscrupulous companies. This harms consumers and businesses and can undermine the cornerstones of democracy. Although we recognize that advertising is an important source of revenue for content creators and publishers online, this does not justify the massive commercial surveillance systems set up in attempts to “show the right ad to the right people”. Other forms of advertising technologies exist, which do not depend on spying on consumers, and alternative models can be implemented without significantly affecting revenue. On the contrary – and that we can attest to – businesses can thrive without privacy-invasive practices. We encourage you to take a stand and ban surveillance-based advertising. 5. Forums is hardly near. And actually doing something, like raising a fund, or joining people who are already doing something for a cause is 100 times smarter than yelling at strangers on niche forum. World doesn't need internet warriors or facebook revolutionists, there are plenty of them already, and it does nothing.
  6. Thanks for pointing me out toward this topic, I had already found the limited weapons slot explanation from the archived iddevnet threads but I didn't found this particular topic on The Dark Mod forums, there seems to be lots of info in this one, I'm gonna read it attentively
  7. True, but so far I haven't heard of this resulting in the shutdown of random web forums, other than those specifically dedicated to extremism like Daily Stormer. Sorry I have no idea what a "legit legal, human rights doctrine" is. The Council of Europe is not a worldwide lawmaking body and their propaganda and PR material (which is all the link contains) is not legal fact. What I posted earlier is 100% correct. There is no concept of "hate speech" in US law under the First Amendment, and the existence of the concept varies considerably amongst other countries (even those in Europe). In fact your own link says so explicitly: It's a colloquial, everyday term used to describe different things by different people. It has no precise legal definition.
  8. @Destined To make myself clear, I'm not for shutting down all political discussions here (as you correctly noted, this is offtopic after all). Nor do I believe in "keep politics out of our games" crap, (quite the opposite, actually). The last paragraph was just my opinion on such discussions, that's why I prefer to read them (from time to time) rather than take part. I do object the level of discussion Kurshok sets in his topics though (and, this is not the first time this happens). In my opinion, he's not that far from e.g. Outlooker. I guess they are being banned elsewhere rather quickly, so at some point forums like these remain their only place to post.
  9. I wonder if I should do the same for now? Jump to 2. I mean I don't have a 3. Oh yeah, can download that later. Nope, a few more minutes later & I finished 1. I'm at my house in mission 2 right now. Dinner break Just a curious question. It's been 6 years and a pandemic. Anyone ever put the whole campaign together into one big playable file / game? While the whole wiki links are a mess, the list helped a lot with different time frames of my life. I could back track (12 years or so) to see which FM's I have missed over the years. Downloading them from that list is a no go. However, if you manually search for each and every one in the forums you will find the author & ask them for a new link to their FM. It's worked so far A lot of the author's links are also way out of date or on places that don't exist any more. Google drive seems to be getting more popular for downloading fm's it seems. More google accounts, since way back then

  11. My speedbuild mission is complete, and should be available in the mission downloader. For those who haven't watched the series, I was originally challenging myself to see if I could create a decent "Too Late" style mission in under 4 hours. While I didn't manage that, I did stay under a 6 hour build time, which still demonstrates that you don't have to devote months of your life to creating fun TDM missions, especially by using my new modules and prefabs. In this mission, Corbin sets out to steal a rival gang's loot before they are raided by the city watch. Be aware that the mission is fairly challenging on Expert. Thanks to Oldjim, MayheM and Xarg for beta-testing. You can watch the creation of this map here: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/18761-springheels-4-hour-challenge/ A playthrough, with final comments, is here:
  12. Not entirely true. Sure, Grayman did a ton of work on AI, but we had working AI even before Grayman took up the Job, you know. And how would you even go about identifying all the features of our AI? Would you go study the code? Is that within your capabilities? I generally think our wiki offers all the needed basic information to start working for TDM, 'though. More detailed questions can be asked in the forums. If you feel your question is a rather simple question related to Dark Radiant, we have a thread for that, otherwise, create a new topic for it and ask away. Some things may be impossible to answer right of the bat and might need some exploring. Regarding your other questions: 1: Not really sure about the maximum number of weapons, but I do wonder why you even have that question. Do you intend to create a mod of TDM with tons of weapons? 2: There is no limit, as Orbweaver already pointed out. 3: It is possible. You'd have to setup a custom readable GUI for that. 4 and 5: I can't check myself right now, as I am at work, but you can always try to find cvars in the console via autocomplete or even the listcvars command. 6: No clue. I am stilling trying to make sense of what you want to achieve with this topic. Are you just curious, or do you plan on creating somehing with TDM?

  14. Found an edge case: When multiple things (i.e. doors) have a common bind parent (i.e. a carriage), they all highlight together even though they don't have any direct relationship to each other. Maybe common highlighting should only be for entities that are bound to each other? Sometimes you need to bind doors to something, for example if you want them to move on a rotated axis or if you're making a vehicle. This happens in a test map I posted to the dev forums today ("Fog obscures transparent textures").
  15. Sui Generis is nearing the end of its Kickstarter campaign, and it's still missing 15,000 £. If you are interested in this genre, please pledge the minimum amount of 10 £, as it would be a waste to let this little gem die. Please note that unlike the American Kickstarter, you can't use Amazon Payments but have to use your credit card to pledge.
  16. This thread should cover most of where we gathered textures: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/1755-texture-resources/ We also got a substantial number of textures from one of the "Blade of Darkness" developers: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/10003-so-what-are-you-working-on-right-now/page/21/&tab=comments#comment-217681
  17. In my opinion what is most needed is a user-friendly searchable asset repository that asset creators can use to store their models/sounds/textures etc in such a way that they are easily obtained and used by other mappers without having to duplicate effort. We have lots of talented people producing content but the only way to share it is via manually downloading other missions and extracting the assets (and needing to contact the author for permission), or with ad-hoc "My stuff" threads that get posted on the forums from time to time. If you have good web design skills this seems like an area where you could really contribute, because AFAIK there aren't many people on the forums with the time, energy or skills to build such a resource. What I think a site would need is: Browsable by category (All Sounds, All Models etc).Full text search within or across categories (Find anything called "chair" in Models)Restrict results by format (only show me ASE models because I don't have anything that will edit LWOs).Each item has a textual description and a number of images (if appropriate). Even better if you can embed a sound player for audio assets.Author information and contact information is available, and the licence for each asset is clearly displayed.Unlimited user tags for each asset, which can be clicked on to use as search terms. An "asset" should be able to contain a ZIP with more than one file, for example if someone uploads a sound file as several .ogg files with a .sndshd shader attached.
  18. DarkRadiant 2.5.0 is ready for download. This is a feature release introducing a new Game Setup dialog, which can adapt itself to the selected game type. More specifically, The Dark Mod mappers are now supported by a custom setup dialog with options to create their mission folder setup right from within DarkRadiant, plus a few safety checks to notify them about a possibly wrong folder configuration. Moreover, new dialogs for editing the TDM mission description files (readme.txt and darkmod.txt) have been added featuring a live preview of the edited texts. It's recommended to prefer this version over any previous release. Free games

Control free on Epic right now. If you own an RTX-graphics card, this is one of the most beautiful implementations of raytracing to date. Sound is also incredible and I genuinely loved the game, although I know not everyone around the forums is such a huge fan, but considering it's - you know - free....

At now we have over 3100 backers with almost $82.000 already pledged! 21. You aren't the only one who doesn't roam the forums as much as he should. For what it's worth I also wince whenever I look back at my reviews of your work, since I feel that some of my comments are a little personal or insulting. I've grown weary of the internet cynicism that says that the most creatively vitriolic criticism is the "correct" one. I stand by what I said about your missions (especially the good parts! Reap As You Sow does have a lot of interesting ideas in it that I would have liked to see refined), but not necessarily how I said it. I look forward to playing your next mission.
  22. Good news, everyone! Almost Epic Adventures: The Goblin's Week has been Greenlit! I really want to thanks everybody who supported my project on Steam and/or took the time to give me some feedback I was especially happy to see that the game concept interested some of you, and that my target audience may really exists What's next? I am working hard on the first alpha version that will cover the first days of the week. After that I may try to run a Kickstarter to be able to work with a few contractors to improve the game. In any case, I will keep you informed
  23. Now I have to apologize to the mods, because it seems I'll keep going with this off-topic. You are clearly offended. That's fine, but if you really plan on making ground on a collaborative process like TDM, you should expect there to be those that won't just let people like you walk all over them. Every single argument you posted I've replied to, other than ones that relate to your anecdotal RL experiences. I've been very respectful while doing so. I've even given concessions (such as not deeming junk a necessity for immersive sims - as there are many immersive sims). If there are any specific things I've missed, I am sorry, feel free to point them out. On the contrary, when I bring up something that contradicts you (Dishonored, while it doesn't have junk, it does have customizable UI stuff like this highlighting thing), you ignore it completely. I'm not using any "tricks". I simply got caught in a discussion on a game I love. On an OPTIONAL feature that you deem will be a massive hindrance. It won't. People have already agreed on some of the points I've made and shared their own views that support my comments. So I believe what I've written makes sense, and is relevant. The only person wasting your time is yourself. You could've decided, from the first "irrelevant" point I made, to ignore me, but you didn't. Neither did you ignore anyone else, you just wanted to keep pushing your view. Which is awesome, we need to have back-and-forths like this. But get off your damn high-horse, would you? You can look down your nose at me, because you've been contributing to the mod for a while now, or for whatever other reason you make up, but don't just dismiss my, or others, legitimate points, because of completely bizarre reasons like "I'm tired" or "it's a waste of time". Get off the forums, do your thing and prove me wrong if I'm such a nuisance. And seeing how you lasted all of 20 minutes with "being done with me", I don't expect you to stay away from this one either.
  24. I am mostly a ttlg guy and sadly a bit distant to the Dark Mod forums here, but i have played a lot of The Dark Mod FMs, grayman's FMs gave me antecipation as i knew they would be awesome even before i booted them up (i loved his initial William Steele missions and got me hooked). Hearing of his passing is such a sad thing, but his memory will live on forever to all of us here due to his Dark Mod legacy. My condolences to @grayson and family.
  25. There have been several occurrences in the last week or two that have underlined the need for a list of missions that showcase TDM in its best light. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Posted Results: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Extended discussion here: http://forums.thedar...f-tdm-missions/) I was hoping a non-mapper might take on the process of running the thread and tallying the results, but since everything is public I decided to just go ahead and get the ball rolling. DIRECTIONS ========== Write down the names of the FIVE missions that you think should be considered "The Best TDM Missions". If someone could only play 5 TDM missions, which 5 should they be? At the end of the week, I will compile the responses. The five missions that get the most recommendations will be labelled "editor's picks" or something like that. Do not rank your choices. List 5 in any order you like. ========================================== To keep this clean, anything other than recommendations or clarification questions will be removed to a different thread.
