  1. I’m creating my first FM for any game ever. I’ve got the bulk of the mission completed and have a handful of things to left to add and tweak. I have a few questions which might have simple solutions. 1. I’ve created a manor/mansion and it starts with all of the lights off. I have a circuit breaker that restores power and therefore most of the lights will turn on. I know this can be done by setting the lights “start_off” to 1 and connecting all of the lights to the switch. I have started to create a nested solution. Every light in a section of the manor is connected to a hidden switch, that switch is then linked to the main circuit breaker switch. This means only a handful of switches are linked to the main circuit breaker rather than every light in the whole manor. With the lights setup this way, it means I can’t have any light switches around otherwise you could turn the lights on with having the main power switched on. Is there a more efficient/better way of setting this up? 2. This also leads to another problem, I have an electric elevator that is operated by a button but I only want it to operate when the circuit breaker (power) is on. 3. I have also noticed some models have a weird brightness to them. Check the examples below. I have tested creating a patch with the same texture and the brightness stays the same. Is there a way of darkening the texture on a patch or some other method of making all of the stained glass windows the same? 4. Is there a way of darkening transparent glass? All of the transparent glass I have tested has a glow when in the dark with only ambient light. See pic attached. can I change the colour of the glass? 5. Is there a way of darkening or changing the colour of water? I have changed the surface texture to dark water but it’s not dark enough. I also want to be able to change the colour. I see it mentioned that you can change the color keyword but I have no idea how to do that. 6. Is there any benefit to export multiple entities to create a single model? That model can then be added and all of the entities deleted. I know a downside would be that tweaking individual entities can’t be done if they are a single model. Thanks Sorry if some of these questions have been answered in the wiki/faq or in this forum somewhere.
  2. This game looks quite interesting. It combines stealth with investigations. You have a fixed-time of four hours to complete your investigation. The reviews on steam aren't very positive, which mainly is because of the bugs it still has, but most of the people are very positive about the mechanics (when they work as intended). For a four hour game I also find it a bit too expensive, so it's maybe best to wait for a steam sale. Here's a short video that explains the game: Edit: The game has already been released, but because of potential spoilers I added an older video.
  3. Not so long ago I found what could make a pretty good profile picture and decided to try it out on these new forums. But I couldn't find a button anywhere that would let me change it. I asked on Discord and it seems Spooks also couldn't find anything anywhere. So I logged into an old alternative account and, lo and behold, that account has a button. This is on the first screen I get when I: 1) click on my account name in the top-right of the browser -> 2) click on 'profile'. Compared to my actual account: Are you also missing this button on your account? It'd be very much appreciated if that functionality could be restored to any of the affected accounts.
  4. Hi, I need to know what the code is to use Spoiler Tags. I am using my tablet and I don't have the options to use anything, like spoiler tags, quote tags, text changes etc. Thanks
  5. Welcome, SC. ? Hope you'll have a good time here. Thank you for all the contributions and willingness to help out.

  6. Nvidia has announced the upcoming launch of its RTX 2080 Ti ($1000-$1200, September 20), RTX 2080 ($700-800, September 20), and RTX 2070 ($500-600, October) GPUs. You didn't read that wrong, the 'R' is for Ray tracing. The key feature they are touting is real-time ray tracing using "dedicated" ray tracing (RT) cores. The tensor cores for machine learning are also used to help ray tracing by denoising. Here is an example of how that can work: Nvidia's keynote presentation at Gamescom 2018 included a demo of the Eidos Montreal game Shadows of the Tomb Raider, using the real-time ray tracing technique, highlighting improvements made to shadows. Earlier in the year, Microsoft announced a DirectX Raytracing API. Similar improvements are being made to Vulkan. There are a lot of questions raised here. How and when will AMD respond, for example? But most importantly, could/will a hybrid ray tracing technique ever be applied to TDM?
  7. Still spreading the word about TDM on forums to new peops... Funny to see people say "Awesome, I loved playing Thief back in the day!"

Yes it was in a discussion where someone was saying how unhappy they are with the way game companies grant themselves permission to do whatever they like to your PC and personal info today. I pointed out that giving up games completely is an unnecessarily overkill solution when there are free games like TDM to play.

Honestly the mod/Indie genre is still really booming right now. And they aint got no reason to do shady invasive privacy bs.

  8. It is so satisfying developing a habit to have an everyday time window for mapping. Waking up early before work just to lay in a "bed" with mouse and keyboard on both sides, lazily adding detail after detail to the map, listening to some ambient rain, storm, wind or blizzard sound to cut off anything around. I wonder if I will manage to finish it for Halloween, but tempo is promising.

And waking up being excited how I will suprise myself this day is great!

  9. I saw a video on two "hidden" TrenchBroom features that might also be interesting for Dark Radiant. The two videos below link to the same video with different timestamps, for a quick example of each feature. Feature 1 - The ability to select 2 faces from 2 separate brushes, then using CSG Merge to automatically create a new brush bridging the gap between these two brush faces. This would save time in drawing a new brush and moving edges / vertices for the same result. Video example: Feature 2 - The ability to select a brush face, then when extruding (for example with the resize tool), this will create a new brush instead of extending the existing brush. This is useful for quickly creating trims without having to draw a new brush or use the clipper tool. Video example: I don't know if these features are complex to implement. And obviously these effects can already be achieved in Dark Radiant with the existing tools. These features just make the edits a little faster and more convenient. Are these features interesting enough to include in Dark Radiant?
  10. Hey, I noticed in the mission list my mission didn't have my author name in it, so I edited the darkmod.txt file in my mission folder and added it, and now the game crashes to desktop every single time. I figured corrupt save file, so deleted that, no help. I redownloaded my mission from the forum, and still it crashes. Anyone know why? How do I fix it? Thanks Neon
  11. Installing yet another free trial from lightwave. Gonna start working again today. I hope 4gb RAM will get the job done for now.

GPU applied only to Octane render engine. For modelling and animating only CPU and RAM. GPU is a small PC with it own chip, that's why your CPU cannot has straight adress to GPU RAM and cannot be used in calculating processes for editor

    3. Atheran

      Atheran

Well... While true it's not always like that. I know for example that Maya uses GPU for viewport rendering and several other programs that have option for it as well (as long as your card supports CUDA).

    4. Lux

      Lux

RAM is the CPU's workspace. I would think that regardless of whether an application uses GPU compute, the majority of data will be loaded in RAM first for fast access either by the CPU or GPU.

  12. It's been fun, but I am no longer able to dedicate time to DR. Thanks to everyone for all your help over the past few years and to the team for keeping alive what I call, "the golden age" of stealth play. After much consideration, I am quitting the games industry. This includes all indie projects.

  13. Hi guys, through the "cheats" topic I got the idea, that it would be quite useful, if there were tags for missions (the post was about removing the killing restriction in some missions to suit the prefered play style). I don't know how easy or difficult this is, but with them, it would be quite convenient to pick missions with playstyles, environment, etc one does want to use. This could also be expanded to other mission properties. I remember a discussion about climbable drains, handles on doors, that cannot be picked and other things the map author chooses for himself. That way these things would be clearer and as I said before, it is easier to choose missions with playstyles that suit oneself. What do think?

  15. There are some ideas about changing the way how differential updates work in tdm_update. The goal is to make any update differential, even if you local copy is dirty, if you update between betas, or update backwards. Here is the very early prototype of tdm_update with new algorithm (let's say it is "tdmsync"-based). Ironically, a better approach has already been proposed, so this tdmsync prototype will die as soon as the better one is implemented. However, this won't happen soon, and there is still some sense in testing this version, because both algorithms rely on the same underlying idea. Which is: it is possible to download portions of a file from HTTP server. Note: the prototype is hacky, and using it would be a rough ride! It is not related to the 2.07 beta testing, and it is unofficial and unsupported. Unless you have experience of beta-testing and joggling with TDM versions, better not use it. Instructions for updating: 1) Place the tdmupdate_tdmsync.exe into TDM installation directory which you want to update. 2a) If you want to update to the latest 2.07 beta release, then download tdm_mirrors.txt file just as you usually do for beta-testing. 2b) If you want to update to some particular version, then create tdm_mirrors.txt file in the directory with the following contents: [Mirror azure] url = http://tdmcdn.azureedge.net/beta207-XY weight = 1 Replace beta207-XY with the codename of the version you want to get. The list of codenames is provided in the next post in this thread. 3) Start tdmupdate_tdmsync.exe. 4) Go to Advanced settings, and enable two checkboxes there: --keep-mirrors (if you forget this, you will download the full 2.06 release of TDM!) --noselfupdate (if you forget this, you will be switched back to stock version of tdm_update) Click Save. 5) Now click button Continue>>. 6) It will tell you it is going to download huge amount of data --- ignore that. Check that the number of files to be downloaded is less than 60 (otherwise you have launched updater in the directory without TDM --- better not do that). 7) Click button Continue>>. 8) The progress reports are rather broken during update. In order to see what's going on, open the directory with TDM installation being updated, and see how new files appear. The files with extension .tdmsync are metainfo files (about 30 MB total), the files with extension .bindiff are actual pk4 differences downloaded. 9) When update is over, note the number in Total bytes downloaded: XX.X MB report --- let it be D. Go to TDM directory and check how much space all .tdmsync and .bindiff files take --- let it be S. Unless I am wrong, the real amount of data downloaded is (S + D). For instance, updating from release205 to beta207-01 took me roughly 600-700 MB of download size. 10) Now that you have the version you want, note that: 1. Most likely you have to reset darkmod.cfg. The effect of new config on old version and vice versa is unpredictable! 2. You probably have to run vcredist_x??.exe manually if TDM crashes immediately when started. 3. The updater does not remove new files when updating to previous versions. In most cases it has no effect. One funny case is that if you downgrade from 2.07 to 2.06, you'll get HRTF still enabled, because alsoft.ini will remain =) 11) You can remove all .tdmsync and .bindiff files: you won't need them ever again. But please don't delete .zip files: they are needed for future differential updates. Please don't perform full updates with this updater. If you want to get a fresh 2.05 installation, better copy one of the TDM installs you have (any version except SVN would be OK), then update it using the tool.
  16. Experimenting with TDM on Steam Link on Android. see topic http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/19432-tdm-on-steam-link-for-android/

  17. Every time my internet goes out for half an hour, I try and check my messages to see if the coast got nuked or something. Thankfully no nukes have fallen today, so there's that.

  18. So on one small map I have spent 28+ man hours, I wonder how much time I spent on Behind Closed Doors... (as I don't remember seeing this feature on previous versions of DR)
