  1. Oddest thing happened. For some reason, I can't access the forum or the Wiki anymore--and this is only for things related to TDM. I tried opening in another browser, no go. Attempted thru a VPN, nothing. Only thing that works is on my mobile or by using Tor. (This just started sometime earlier this week. ) I'm wondering if it's because I'm in Vietnam, they do block a lot of sites and addresses--sometimes randomly. Has anyone else had weirdness like this before? -mmijimm
  2. Not so long ago I found what could make a pretty good profile picture and decided to try it out on these new forums. But I couldn't find a button anywhere that would let me change it. I asked on Discord and it seems Spooks also couldn't find anything anywhere. So I logged into an old alternative account and, lo and behold, that account has a button. This is on the first screen I get when I: 1) click on my account name in the top-right of the browser -> 2) click on 'profile'. Compared to my actual account: Are you also missing this button on your account? It'd be very much appreciated if that functionality could be restored to any of the affected accounts.

I'd like to ask: Could the Fire elemental article at the wiki be unlocked ? It's very out of date at this point, we've had a working FE in the core game for a while now, and it has appeared in some of the missions. I'd like to update the info and a more crisp screenshot of the elemental that I've already prepared.

Also, could we have the main Universe article and The Empire article briefly unlocked, just so I could add a Category:Universe tag to those ? They are currently entirely unclassified on the wiki and it's a pain always needing to look them up separately (and not very good navigation for new players searching for info on the wiki).

Also, was the Builder Characters article vandalised that it's also off-limits ? Some of the other character articles (for thieves, noblemen, etc.) have been expanded over time with new entries, as the number of missions (and their contributions to the "lore") has grown, but that article seems stuck in the Tears of St. Lucia era of the project. After 10 years, I think the less set-in-stone universe articles should be slightly more open to occassional updating.

Thank you for considering this ! I appreciate any help I can get while trying to update minor but useful stuff on the wiki. Lately, I've expanded some of the more stub-like, previously unfinished articles on gameplay concepts (especially tools and weaponry) in places where they were still lacking. It might seem the wiki has loads of interesting and detailed stuff, and though that's true, some articles really need more regular updating.

  4. Hi, I need to know what the code is to use Spoiler Tags. I am using my tablet and I don't have the options to use anything, like spoiler tags, quote tags, text changes etc. Thanks
  5. The Wiki is currently uneditable, at least for me. See the attached image. I came back yesterday from a visit, turned on the computer, went to the wiki, and I was logged off. I thought "OK, my login simply ran out, it is not indefinite". So I logged in, as usual. However, since then, I have been unable to edit any article on the wiki. Any. Article, discussion, category, no edits can be saved and I always receive this database error. Is this a cache clearing issue, or is this yet another hiccup on part of the official servers ?

TDM wiki every edit becomes an error.png

Yes it was in a discussion where someone was saying how unhappy they are with the way game companies grant themselves permission to do whatever they like to your PC and personal info today. I pointed out that giving up games completely is an unnecessarily overkill solution when there are free games like TDM to play.

Honestly the mod/Indie genre is still really booming right now. And they aint got no reason to do shady invasive privacy bs.

  7. I didn't want to start a whole new topic on this, but I wasn't able to find anything... A simple question: Would it be okay to upload the official, promotional screenshots from approved and published FMs to the TDM wiki ? I plan to eventually write individual wiki articles on the individual FMs, and having those screenshots as basic visual material to represent the mission could be nice. I'd like to know if there'd be potential issues with bandwidth over the uploading of the images, or issues with an author's permission to use the screenshots (similar to the permissions necessary for FM translations). Thank you for shedding light into this topic.
  8. I succesfully downloaded our wiki for offline use. 1,17 gb in 4 hours. more info see topic TDM collection dvd

You could do the same with ModWiki, which has more technical information on idtech4.

  9. Hi guys, through the "cheats" topic I got the idea, that it would be quite useful, if there were tags for missions (the post was about removing the killing restriction in some missions to suit the prefered play style). I don't know how easy or difficult this is, but with them, it would be quite convenient to pick missions with playstyles, environment, etc one does want to use. This could also be expanded to other mission properties. I remember a discussion about climbable drains, handles on doors, that cannot be picked and other things the map author chooses for himself. That way these things would be clearer and as I said before, it is easier to choose missions with playstyles that suit oneself. What do think?

  12. Hi all, Skaruts requested that the Wiki entry on skins is not that easy to understad, so I tried to update it. This would be the (unformatted) updated version. I am thinking about adding a specific example later on, but for now it is not included. I would appreciate any constructive criticism before I actually replace the olde version! The skins functionality in D3 allows a single model to have a number of textures ("skins") which can be selected from a dialog in the editor. This provides ease-of-use for mappers and (possibly) reduced memory usage as the model only needs to be loaded once. A skin file has the following basic structure: skin [name] { model [complete path of the model] [material path of texture to be replaced] [complete path of replacement texture] } The title has the format skin [your_skin_name] Your skin name has to be unique and like all definitions in TDM should not contain any hyphens (-). In the inner part of the brackets, you first define for which model the skin can be applied. If you do not define this, the skin will not show in the model menu in DR. At this place you can define several models at once, if they share any textures you want to replace. Make sure to use the complete path of the model. The easiest way to do this (and to avoid any spelling errors) is by inserting the model into DR and copying the "path" spawnarg to your skin file. In order to replace textures, you first need to know which textures are present in a given model. One easy way to do that is to open the model preview window in DR. On the left side, right beneath the models list, there is a list of all materials used in this model. To replace a texture, you insert the whole path of the texture you want to replace and, seperated with a space (or for better readability a tab), directly write the path of the material you want as a replacement. Each texture that does not get listed here, is not replaced. If you want any part of the model to not appear at all you can use the nodraw material ("textures/common/nodraw"). Errors: If the model should appear completely black in game, this means that TDM cannot find your definition for the skin. Check for spelling errors! Similarly, if any part of your model appears black, the defined texture cannot be found. Keep in mind, that any custom texture you want to use has to have a material definition!
  13. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/9082-newbie-darkradiant-questions/page-323 // the discussion is sliding way out of newbie questions, so figured it'd be good to make a new thread regarding this. This first stuff is not really related - a preamble. Modular design with assets and perhaps explanation to help learn, allowing increase in creativity and mission diversity or achieving vision. or Here, catch. or Go figure it out. First is more work, but helps people a lot. Second is less work, simply provide a solution. Third is no work, ship without a rudder. In short, it'd be really nice to get more hands on deck with updating the wiki. As and when required/prompted by newbie questions, so it's easier for people to find and understand the answers to the questions they need to ask and take the time to go figure it out: http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges No-one's born a brain surgeon, but everyone can pick someone's brains. People CAN learn to be a brain surgeon, if they have access to the edu-material on how to become one, know where to search and find - and can understand it. ---- I've included a case study, using the current documentation, trying to discard as much pre-existing knowledge of DR and rely solely on the wiki and forum for answers - not asking any questions. A simple challenge for the player: Entering a corridor, the door slams shut behind. A series of scythes swing across the path to safety, as an ornate door slowly opens to reveal a zombie shambler. There is no way back - the player is under pressure to run from the zombie (potentially lethal damage if caught), while timing their sprints along the corridor between the scythe traps (potentially lethal damage, increasing in speed/damage given). Ultimately, to escape, they must leap across a dangerously deep pit (potentially lethal fall damage - fake, safe drop into water, where there is some hidden loot and escape via ladder). The player is placed into peril and must react - if they fail the traps or get caught by zombie, damage or death. If they fail the jump - believe might die, but actually safe and can grab hidden reward. Succeed the jump - zombie is held up by scythes (and clip), so has time to notice ladder and perhaps explore the pit if they're uber-cool and pass the challenge 100%. The only danger is "inside" the trap. Once past - there's uncertain safety. Except I've revealed it now, so it's not uncertain, heh. So - Here's a route I might take to go about achieving this, knowing nothing about DR and relying purely on existing documentation. Hopefully it will remind the veterans just how much there is to figure out in order to something basic such as this, and greens just how difficult it can be to realise a simple gameplay concept. Big challenge for new mapper: So this leads to the case study of how I would have to go about figuring something out, using the available documentation to me on Dark Radiant and in the forum, and just how frustrating and warren-like it can be to use, in its current state..: This makes it very difficult to simply walk into Mordor and figure out what is not working and why. But... that's an example of the run-around behind being able to figure out how to do something only one simple thing from a simple scenario, without having to nag about it and hope someone tosses a ball that contains the solution without an explanation. If it was painful to read - that's good. Because it was painful having to go through the whole process to find out, "that'll have to do, 'cos can't figure how to do it 'cos there's some missing reading available atm for tdm". Also having to type it all... ouch.

I would personally love an A to Z tut. I still might have a guy set for doing my FM soundtrack so having extra knowledge to arm all the select audio bits would be wonderful.

The Location System is technically mentioned in the context of a blurb saying the ambient sound system exists. (I remember because I wrote it!) But not everything it does. It's a bit complicated for an intro tutorial, but if many people think it's important enough, maybe we can have section just for it and add the ambient sound & EFX.
