Master 'Models Needed' list-- post requests here

Springheel

Recommended Posts

edit June 1, 2010: I've moved this list from the internal forums. It's not really up to date, but has a lot of good reference pics and is still a decent list for those looking for something to model.

There's also a wiki page: http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Model_Wishlist#General_Idea_Wishlist

The old list was getting outdated, so I've revised it here. We actually have a pretty good complement of prop models now, so it's starting to come down to, 'what would be neat to have', rather than what do we desperately need.

Post special requests here.

Articles in red are priority items that are needed asap. Update: There are NO red articles! We actually have all *necessary* models for a generic toolkit. At this point, further assets are things that are needed for specific maps or just things that would help round out the available models.

Green articles indicate that models of that type already exist, but more versions are desirable--modelers should check to see what already exists to avoid duplication

Articles in black are items that don't exist but have no special priority.

(List is currently WIP)

I think beyond mundane items, there is a need for Victorian technological stuff - worn, battered up old electrics, dials (there is only one, and it's too cartoony and clean), pumps, pressure doors and all the machinery that made the Thief games enthralling. This element is mostly missing from TDM at present. There isn't much in the way of photosources for these beyond looking at TMA and TDP and working from that. If someone would be willing to do the models, I have a few concepts I could submit in the form of sketches or built from brushes as a sample. Might need some extra texture work, though.

[edit]Actually, there is some stuff; will be back here later. Until then: beauty!

Still need good statues, ominous and beautiful. Cloaked and hooded, mysterious, noble and proud, different poses, etc. Cathedrals often have dozens and each one unique, so there certainly can't be too many. Looooooove statues.

And, the lower-poly kind. There's no need for a single texture stone statues to have thousands of polys. The fewer polys and the simpler the shadow mesh, the more can be placed in a given scene.

Here are some good source pictures for dials/gauges I found on the net:

I think they capture well the feel of vintage technology.

And two pieces of weird machinery that wouldn't look out of place in a Builder chapel:

Pretty similar to some things found in Thief, except they look a bit bulkier due to the black bakelite.

In fact, I'd say we need both: The highly detaild version (with simple shadow mesg), a medium version and a low-poly version. This not only applies to statues, but also to anything else we have, so we can use these entities for the eventual LOD system.

Consider this a formal request for help with creating lower-poly versions of our models! :)

Edit: If you get the ASE Exporter script and DR with Scripting Support, you can export models from Brushwork from DR, which is pretty cool:

ASE Model left, original brush right.

No. This is an old list I created a few years back. There's really no official "models needed" list anymore.

Probably the best way to get ideas for new models is to take requests from mappers.

If I may give a few suggestions:

Any kinds of trinkets for loot objects would be nice. Just look a the stuff we now have in DR for loot. There is generally one item of specific type: We have one loot vase, one bottle...

It may get repetitive for the players to loot same looking trophies and goblets again and again.

Can you make some expensive looking items? Ornamental sword? Golden helmet? Expensive goods like silver flute, scepters, rods.

Something like this, but with the builder symbol.

Also, I've seen that castleish or manor interior wall decorations are low. Like tapestries, and other kinds of objects one might find on walls.

I don't know what you find interesting to create, maybe this helps.

"We have got the Holy Hand Grenade..." ... "The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, but of course!"

When priming the HCABB (Holy Cross And Ball Bomb), grab the cross firmly, speak a small prayer praising the holy builder for his mighty pressure waves, draw it out of the top firmly, then throw the ball as far away as you can. If in need, you can use the cross afterwards for selfdefense, stick it into the eye of the nearest approaching enemy, or whack them over the head with it. You can also throw it, but duck in case the exploding ball's pressure wave will throw it back at you. Good luck, builder!

So uh, this list is pretty out of date by the looks of it... any chance of a tidyup by Springheel or anyone who knows the score?

Intel Sandy Bridge i7 2600K @ 3.4ghz stock clocks
8gb Kingston 1600mhz CL8 XMP RAM stock frequency
Sapphire Radeon HD7870 2GB FLeX GHz Edition @ stock @ 1920x1080

I updated the list a bit 2 year ago or so. I didn't add any new models though, all I did was remove broken links and suggestions for some of the models I've already made, so it's still very outdated but at least it's a bit better.

Hi all! Been tinkering with Blender for the past year and I'm ready to cut my teeth on a few models. The chess set link intregued me as it looks like the Lewis Chessmen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_chessmen Nice little statues to model! Question is, how detailed (polycount) should such a small object be? How does the scale in Blender translate to the engine? Could the pieces be scaled up or down in the game? I could easily picture a garden in some chess addicted noble's courtyard that has large pieces....especially after seeing this picture: http://hgrm.sndimg.com/HGRM/2011/06/29/RX-HGRM-DL_chess-board_s4x3_lg.jpg Could placing a specific piece on a pressure plate make something happen?

Give me a hammer and tell me I have 6 hours to break up a 2 inch thick layer of ice. As soon as you walk away I'm going to use some hot water and salt so I can take a nap for the remaining 5 and a half hours. Taureans hate wasting energy and if there's a more efficient way to do something they will find it.
