  1. The best thing about not mapping more than like every other year is the awesome feeling to see how far TDM has gotten in all appartments. I can just create some parallaxing cobblestones and walk to and fro and just let the jaw drop :D

      True, new shading added to such an old engine and game is always very impressive, I'd love to see what else TDM has in mind, like Volumetrics and maybe a better material system that's either PBR or at least GGX.

  3. As far as I know, NT is more popular among IT or sysadmins (the fancy term now is devops because it's a hybrid sysadmin, not sure about system engineer jobs)? Its advantages are probably its active directory and its ability to run a mail server (forgot what it was called before pre ms.exchange). The one that's harder to maintain is openldap (I've tried it and it is difficult), but there is an alternative called freeIPA. The main competitors to Windows Domain Services in the old Windows NT days should be Novell NetWare, Sun Directory Services (which also uses LDAP; I'm not sure about Sun Microsystems' NIS Yellow Pages. Does anyone still remember the Yellow Pages book containing business or corporate phone numbers and certain ads?), and Banyan Vines Operating System....   4. another thing many may not know is that NT is actually as old as win 3.11 the first version NT 3.51 used the win 3.11 gui and the upcomming NT 4.0 used the windows 95 one though with certain differences. the reason many did not know about NT back then was that the first two versions were intended for bussiness and were pretty expensive. and you could also not really use them for gaming because they only supported directx 3 which was severely hampered. later an update upped this to directx 5 but it was still not a good gaming box. the differences from windows 95 was mostly the device manager plus additions of some admin tools to setup servers etc. both ran pretty well and were stable though as said not intended for gaming at all. with the fiasco of Windows ME microsoft decided to scrap the old dos platform and instead merged the ME gui and directx compatibility with windows NT 5.0 or Win 2000 as it was named. this turned out to be a huge success as windows 2000 was massively more stable than the win9x platform (id even go so far as to argue that win 2000 was microsofts most stable release ever).
  5. NVIDIA announced the 16nm Pascal GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 GPUs. The $599 GTX 1080 will be more powerful than Titan X, GTX 980 Ti, or two GTX 980s. Neither card uses High Bandwidth Memory like the top Pascal GPU, Tesla P100. Intel's Broadwell-E flagship enthusiast CPU, the Core i7-6950X, is expected to have 10 cores. AMD Zen mainstream desktop CPUs could have 6-8 cores. The architecture has moved from Bulldozer's Clustered Multithreading to Simultaneous Multithreading, which is closer to Intel's design and has two threads per core. Zen desktop CPUs will be released before laptop CPUs. There could be a 16 core APU in 2017. AMD's 14 or 16nm Polaris GPUs will apparently be cheaper and cooler, rather than trying to compete with the GTX 1080's performance. The Radeon R9 490 could cost $300. The Polaris GPUs will not have High Bandwidth Memory, which will instead be added to 2017 Vega GPUs as successors to the Fury series. Sony could launch a "PS4K" console using an AMD Polaris GPU and faster Jaguar CPU capable of playing the current PS4 games in 2160p instead of 1080p. It could also boost frame rates for the PSVR.

So DDR5 and SSD prices have really gone up, and many sellers have jacked up their prices (even for older production batches of DDR4 RAM (NOS - new old stock), for example, have also been affected after the announcement that DDR4 production would be discontinued). This is all due to demand from AI. This also reminds me to stockpile WD Blue HDDs (for cold storage) and Seagate Ironwolf HDDs (for future NAS projects, and it's CMR, baby). The mass flooding incident at the Western Digital factory in Thailand back then made HDDs unaffordable and left a lasting impression. even seagate has factory in there. thailand is the key player here. For some reason, I have a hunch that something like this might happen again in another form. Maybe it's just my confirmation bias. I can't imagine if GPU prices rise again someday and the price difference reaches $100-200. That could be the end of the "PCmasterrace", or maybe I'll switch to GeForce Now. Maybe a price hike as severe as during the COVID era will be hard to happen again, but we'll never know. For now, it's still at MSRP, thankfully. So right now in this very second I'm just hoping that TPU devices like the Coral PCI-E TPU will be able to surpass GPUs in the future when it comes to AI. Even though GPUs are still superior in many aspects today. There might be a huge shift when they become affordable to consumers, especially if their prices suddenly drop to near the MSRP of the RTX 5080 (just hypothetically speaking). I don't have any expectations here; maybe in 6-8 years there will be a seesaw effect. And lately, with the rise in PC component prices, for some reason I've become interested in the PS5/PS5 Pro, even though the downside is the increase in console game prices—though not significant—and there are some PC-exclusive games unavailable on consoles and vice versa. Every platform has its pros and cons, but at least the price hikes for consoles aren't as intense as those for PCs...
  7. Aye there was quite a lot of competing tech at the time. Novel held on for quite some years feks. One fun thing with win 2000 was that the server version could cluster several computers and share the cpu power from each giving a massive boost in performance. I played around with it quite a bit and it was like windows on steroids . Hmm yeah i know the one you think of and it was scrapped due to security problems. Cant remember the name either though . Yeah i got the same sales pitch on win98se which i allready had so i took win 2000 and boy was he wrong . I newer had one crash with it and it ran for 7 years. I actually prefered it over xp but in the end i was forced to move on due to compatibility problems. Vista was actually not that bad after the last service pack. Main problem was that the computers at the time simply lacked the power to run it properly. My first try ran like ass, but as i got better hardware it started to fly. I actually kinda liked the cinematic desktop feature much more than i like windows 11's attempt at copying macos with its centered start menu. I also hated that they started hiding context menues and other stuff so what once took one click now takes atleast two wtf is that about ???.
  8. A set of some 200 missions is a lot to sift through to find what one likes. I never used your site but if it provided functionality to search missions for parameters like approximate playtime, series v standalone, and tags like undead, spiders, mansion, city, etc, then it sounds plenty useful. Can the functionality be incorporated into the main web page? Perhaps even integrated to fetch underlying data from the wiki (so that trusted editors can keep the parameters up to date)?
  9. The dominance of GNU/Linux in the enterprise sector is quite surprising. In the mid-2000s, it was able to dominate and pure Unix operating systems such as SCO Unix, HP-UX, IBM AIX, Solaris, etc dropped out of popularity real quick Was TCP/IP stack already included in Windows NT without having to purchase it separately? As far as I know, TCP/IP add-on was not included in Windows 3.1 My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I recall there was a discussion about graphics and printer drivers running in userspace on NT 3.x and being moved to ring 0 on NT 4.0. I'm still unsure about the facts. It seems to be related to performance and stability this old stuff reminds me of old Charles Petzold's book.   11. I'm trying to set up a Stim/Response system for a furnace that powers a room (lights, doors, etc). One thing I want to do is activate a speaker to play the generator startup sound/running loop from a fire stim, and stop the speaker from a water stim. The problem is that the only way to activate a speaker I know of is by trigger, and triggers don't differentiate between Activating and Deactivating. Lights and Frob settings can be toggled On/Off with Responses, but there's nothing for speakers. So right now I have a Fire and Water stim activating a trigger targeting the speaker, and either stim can start or stop the speaker. If the player uses a fire stim originally (as intended) and a water stim to stop it, everything works as intended. If, however, a player starts by using a water arrow on the furnace, the generator noise will start, and the Fire stim will stop it. I'd like to set it up so only a Fire stim will start the speaker, and only a Water stim will stop it. Do I have any options in DarkRadiant for this, or would I need to do scripting?
  12. [EDIT] This matter has been resolved, and no fault of the website. I wanted to add a different look to my Venice map by buying a street of models to use. I found this and bought it. It's a lie. What you get is a set of OUR (Dark Mod Arcturus Rocks and assorted .ASE models from the Grass Demo; packaged up with random textures and images. This has given me a complete head fuck as now I can't trust this bastard with my credit card details so I have to cancel my card and notifiy everyone I do business with in direct debits of the new card which I won't get for 10 days.

I did do a quick search for this but wasn’t able to find anyone asking the question - @stgatilovDoes the engine have any code to allow NPC's to climb up and down ladders..? if not how hard would it be to implement? @ArcturusI assume the climbing animation and then blend blending animations would be doable? And on a related note, what is the steepest incline/stairs NPC's can currently pathfind up/down..?
  14. hmm its actually rather advanced and unfortunatly a bit of a pain to setup. one example is hrtf (headphone surround) which requires mapping sound locations with a tool they provide. https://deepwiki.com/kcat/openal-soft/5.3-gui-configuration-tool lists a good deal of which steps needed. for all other cases it is probably better to ask on the github forums for it. attached my own config for dhewm3 which sounds somewhat ok. drop it next to the dhewm3 executable. if you feel up to experimenting you can add your own settings to it alsoft.zip
  15. There are currently nearly 200 missions to the game. That's a lot. So I made a list of the ones you shouldn't miss. If you're a beginner, do not start with the best missions. Play a few others first to learn how the game and controls work, and how you can use some items to interact with objects on the map. You will appreciate them more that way. Tastes vary. My subjective assessment is based on how enthusiastic and interested I was during the mission. Generally, I appreciate the unusual circumstances. If I felt lost too many times or needed hints to solve the plot, those were clear disadvantages. I don't like the needle in the haystack type elements. (Secrets are fine.) The list isn't a quality line. I don't want to add precise ratings, that's not the point. I have a message for those whose missions didn't end up here: Don't worry. Others may judge differently. In any case, some missions may be added here with some editing. A few didn't make it here only because of the obscure wording in the descriptions of objectives. Give me tips if you think something is missing from the list. 200 missions are a lot, I might have skipped some gems. BEST MISSIONS -A House of Locked Secrets: Very funny, diverse and memorable, sometimes nonsensical. The best mission. 4 hrs -Seeking Lady Leicester: It's probably the second best mission, but I won't argue with anyone who ranks it first. Knowing how to rotate items is essential to play this mission (middle mouse button). 6 hrs -Volta 2, Cauldron of the Gods 2.5 hrs -Volta 3: Gemcutter 3 hrs -Penny Dreadful 1: The grail of regrets 1.5-2 hrs -Penny Dreadful 2: All the way up 3 hrs -The Painter's Wife: A monumental mission. The size doesn't mean this is the best one. -Hazard Pay 2 hrs -Now and Then 5.5 hrs -Black Mage 3 hrs -Requiem: The mission is excellent and imaginative. But it's painfully difficult to move without being noticed at certain points. 4 hrs -Crucible of Omens: Behind closed doors: Excellent mission, the only problem is that it's difficult to navigate between the different parts, and it's hard to find your way back to places. Having a route back to the first part, which could be opened from the later part of the map, would have helped the flow. 5 hrs RECOMMENDED MISSIONS -Iris I hesitated a lot whether to put this in the list of best missions. But the first part of the mission offers so many options, it's rather a caricature of the genre. And the environment isn't very good either. Less would have been more. The second part of the mission is much better. I appreciate the innovative element. 7 hrs -Chronicles of Skulduggery 0: To Catch a Thief -Chronicles of Skulduggery 2: A Precarious Position 2.5 hrs -Chronicles of Skulduggery 3: Sacricide: Good, traditional mission but the story is too black and white. -No Honor Among Thieves: The end isn't satisfying, but otherwise this is a good mission chain. 5.5 hrs -Shadows of Northdale act 2. 3 hrs -The Last Night on Crookshank Lane 4 hrs -Penny Dreadful 3 -Mother Rose Funny. It's not for beginners! 40 min -A Score to Settle -Sir Talbot's Collateral -Talbot 2: Return to the City 1.5 hrs -Talbot 3: Fiasco at Fauchard street 1.5 hrs -Thomas Porter 1, Knighton Manor: Good jokes. -Thomas Porter 2, The Beleaguered Fence -Thomas Porter 3, Glenham Tower -King of Diamonds -Accountant 2: The code is good. -Golden Skull: 30 min -Vengeance for a Thief 1-3 -The Factory Heist -A Good Neighbor -Snowed Inn -Langhorne Lodge -Heart of Saint Mattis 3-4 hrs -Perilous Refuge 2.5 hrs -The Hare in the Snare: Part 1 -Rightful Property -Alberic's Curse 1.5 hrs -A Night in Altham: A strange mission. 9 hrs -By the Cookbook 1 hour -Wizard's Treasure 1 hour -A Night to Remember 1.5 hrs -Lord Edgars Bathhouse 1.5 hrs -Last Offering: How much you enjoy it depends largely on what equipment you choose at the beginning. 1 hour -The Rift: Quite cool, but the music isn't on the ambient channel so it's not possible to make it quiet. 1 hour -Briarwood Cathedral 1.5 hrs -The Threepenny Revue: 45 min -Mission of Mercy 1 hour
  16. By "IP", I'm thinking you mean my machine's address (not intellectual property). Yes, if an AI was not privacy-preserving, and actively monitoring for and reporting IRL criminal activity (likely many are), and misconstrued what I was doing, then I see your point. For my particular FM, the phrases don't really imply any criminal acts, just clues. This is not the case for all FMs. In those cases, when untrustworthy AI systems allow rich prompts, it's probably a good idea to specifically indicate you are writing for a fictional mission within a PC game. Also, the activity itself, translating into a fixed suite of multiple languages, is probably not something an actual criminal enterprise would do. Talking in the forums about your FM under development would also show that your intentions are not real-world crimes, and I'd like to think ward off all but the most wrong-headed prosecutions.
  17. Just my very personal opinion (and not meant to offend or be disrespectful in any way): I do not like the adjust-difficulties-in-game-settings-to-your-liking approach. Feels like going to a restaurant, getting a bunch of raw stuff thrown before you (or a full spice rack instead of just, dunno, a salt shaker) and the chef telling you to do whatever you like with it. YOU are the f'in chef - you're supposed to cook (as the kids say (I think)). Apart from that, it feels like a bunch of training missions designed to induce rage. Need to get my blood pressure meds.
  18. Greetings everyone! I recently got into TDM and am already having a lot of fun playing through and ghosting missions. However, coming from Thief, I am mostly relying on the rules and my experience with that game, while there are clearly differences in how TDM works. Right now, there is talk in the ghosting discussion thread on TTLG to amend the ruleset and include clarifications pertaining to TDM. So I wanted to drop by and ask: is there an active TDM ghosting community already and have any rules for this playstyle been developed?   19. I think it would be smart to go ahead and start a "Newbie thread" that covers all newbie questions in one place, as with the TDS Forum. It doesn't have to be this one, just for future reference. Aaanyway, I was going through the A-Z Tutorial, and right about the time you make the pool of water, I fixed some leaks, thought I got them all. Now it won't Dmap again, but when I hit Pointfile, it says "Could not open pointfile: E:/games/ ... /TutorialMap.lin" I don't know why since it's been working up to now. So if I have a leak I can't find it, but it's troubling just that Pointfile suddenly, inexplicably doesn't open! There isn't any ".lin" file either; not sure what happened to it. Any ideas? Edit: I started a map from scratch and Pointfile didn't show up again. So whatever it is, it isn't something I messed up in that first map, but a general problem I'm having with DR. Edit2: But it does Dmap and Map just fine, so that's ok.

For the people eager to play with the latest state of development, two things are provided: regular dev builds source code SVN repository Development builds are created once per a few weeks from the current trunk. They can be obtained via tdm_installer. Just run the installer, check "Get Custom Version" on the first page, then select proper version in "dev" folder on the second page. Name of any dev version looks like devXXXXX-YYYY, where XXXXX and YYYY are SVN revision numbers from which the build was created. The topmost version in the list is usually the most recent one. Note: unless otherwise specified, savegames are incompatible between any two versions of TDM! Programmers can obtain source code from SVN repository. Trunk can be checked out from here: https://svn.thedarkmod.com/publicsvn/darkmod_src/trunk/ SVN root is: https://svn.thedarkmod.com/publicsvn/darkmod_src Build instructions are provided inside repository. Note that while you can build executable from the SVN repository, TDM installation of compatible version is required to run it. Official TDM releases are compatible with source code archives provided on the website, and also with corresponding release tags in SVN. A dev build is compatible with SVN trunk of revision YYYY, where YYYY is the second number in its version (as described above). If you only want to experiment with the latest trunk, using the latest dev build gives you the maximum chance of success. P.S. Needless to say, all of this comes with no support.   21. I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.

  22. Hello! Tracking down information on software and plug-ins that work with D3 / TDM can be a tough. So I have created a thread here where people can post what software/ plug-ins/ tutorials or other references they've had success or failure with in TDM. 3DS MAX 2013 64bit .ase - Default .ASE model exporter works. However you have to open the .ase file in text edit and manual change the *BITMAP line on each material to read something like: "//base/textures/common/collision" which allows the engine to read the correct material path. md5.mesh / animation - Beserker's md5 exporter/importers for 3dsmax. http://www.katsbits.com/tools, Importing and exporting works. The model must be textured, UV'd, with a skin modifier attached to the bones to export. PM me (Kingsal) for help with this. Imported models using the script will not be weighted appropriately, so this is not recommended if you are simply trying to edit existing tdm content. (Use blender instead) MAYA 2011 32bit md5.mesh - So far I've not had any luck with Maya 2011. I am using Greebo's MayaImportx86 for Maya 2011. I've got the importer working however I get a "Unexpected Internal Failure(kFailure)" and the import fails. This could be due to something finicky in Maya that I am not doing correctly. Will keep trying.. Blender 2.7 about - Blender is commonly used and pretty well supported on the forums/ wiki. While I've been involved in indie game development for a while now, I'm first and foremost a writer. My most recent project has been a novella that tries to capture the visual feel and tone of the Thief series (you can find the link below). As I was writing, I found myself playing a lot of Thief and Dark Mod fan missions, and got to thinking that maybe I wanted to make one myself, as a companion piece to the book.
