  1. had to reactivate Win 7 due to a hardware change. I have the family pack for 3 PCs. I call them, it asks how many PCs its installed on and I say 3. It says I'm not allowed to do that... Just another reason not to support the developers. At least I got this used, so they got nothing from me.

Plus you could get Office or any other non-Dev/Dev software (depending on the package) software for essentially free. Then they took the Technet Sub price and ramped it up from 400> $750!! You used to be able to get it on special for $258. My brother and I split the cost@129 a piece and got 4 unlimited Ultimate licenses +office and whatever else. It was nice for a while.

    3. Lux

      Lux

Just like with mobile, they want a single license tied to a device. The motherboard changes and its no longer valid.

    4. Bikerdude

      Bikerdude

Regarding tieing a licence to a single motherboard, fortunately for the end user that isn't legally binding despite what MS or any other idiot says.

Software companies have been under this illusion for years.

  2. Don't you love it when hardware breaks the month after your warranty expires? A critical screw (to the backrest of a chair) literally snapped in half. I bet they do this on purpose...

Some time ago I got 6mm screws, they just snap when I tighten them. 30 year old screws are worn and bended, but still work.

      Lux

maybe you should get your screws from MSC.

  3. Even though I NEVER smoke and I have had alcohol perhaps 4 times, they say I have high blood pressure. If I'm gonna be punished even when I stay away from those things, why not just go on a binge? I guess its because Alcohol tastes like **** and smoking ****s up the lungs.

I have very low blood pressure, drink like a fish and smoke like a chimney. Yay for me :( When I've been in the hospital for surgery the doctors always see my blood pressure and say, "ohh! we have an athlete here!" LOL

      HBP is generally hereditary.

IMO Smoking would be like getting hit in the groin by a baseball. I do not need to go through it to say that it would be unpleasant.

  4. Isn't winter time great? You can be rendering in blender and the machine will still be super quiet. In the summer time, it sounds like a jet.

The reason a lot of people were unhappy with UT2003 was because they took out Assault Mode.

    4. Xarg

      Xarg

They could have just patched it in instead of releasing another version right after it, and taking a huge crap on people who bought 2003... hell it could have been an expansion. That's why I didn't buy 2004, because of what they did to 2003.

  8. Every time I update Windows and it takes 10 minutes installing some .net framework fixes, I get this (-) much closer to deleting the Windows partition. If I can ray-trace an entire scene faster than software installs, they're doing it wrong. If it takes 10 minutes to apply some fixes on a 6-core 16 GB machine with an SSD, they're doing it wrong!

Yeah, but if I wanted to wait for stuff to compile, I would use Gentoo. :) I wonder if the .net stuff compiles using multiple threads? Just imagine how slow it would be on the Celerons a lot of average Joes use.

    4. AluminumHaste

      AluminumHaste

only time I've had issues with .Net installing is when the patch trying to install, is older than the newest version.

Have to uninstall the later version, let the patch install, then update to latest version. Pretty rare, but it happens.

We went moutainbiking last weekend in Kentucky and these trails were NOT well traveled. We were riding through spider web after spider web through the eerie wood. There was one about every 3-6 meters average. I almost got one in my mouth and another in my eye! When we'd stop riding there were webs hanging off the bikes and our arms and spiders on our handlebars and clothes! It was... wow. Not well traveled trails indeed.

There are some maps for Duke3d that surpass the original. Its editor is the easiest developer-level editor of any game I've seen. Even clever elementary schoolchildren were making models of their schools.

    3. Melan

      Melan

There were a lot of those "my house"/"my school" maps. With lots of pigcops and explosions. It also helped that D3D was one of the best games of its kind.

So, Glyph Seeker, I say give it a try! It's just a few bucks, and there are some very impressive graphical enhancements out there for it.

    4. DeTeEff

      DeTeEff

I came to think of the Build engine to be quite risky. Lots of times the maps got corrupted, usually by something bad I did. I remember that one should NOT remove sectors by collecting all the vertexes on one spot :) Don't know if it was because of that but my schoolmap got corrupted :(

Haha, reminds me of the old Ubuntu days, where everyone tried to get the iso right when a new version came out. So, we would try to snag a copy and slip away before the masses realized it even came out and the servers slowed down.

blender lets you save the models mesh as a picture, then you use a paint program to create the texture then add that texture as the uv texture for the model.

    3. Springheel

      Springheel

Do you mean rigged to a skeleton? That's a lot more involved than uv maps.

    4. lost_soul

      lost_soul

Yep, I used a model from another game, made a skeleton, and rigged it so that all of the respective pieces can move. It was a learning experience. However, properly texturing a complex object evades me... (for now)

  18. Why does a text editor choke and tell me there is not enough memory to open a 2 meg txt file, on a machine with 1 GB of RAM? I would expect this behavior from a machine in 1993, but today? really?

I remember one time I was going through the "mole people" tunnels in vanilla Deus Ex, and somehow one of the passive NSF must have gotten hurt by the cat that wanders the area. Suddenly all the NSF in the tunnel were running around chasing and firing at the one cat, and having a lot of trouble killing it because their "marksmanship" was never intended to hit cat-sized targets!

Looks like the L2 cache of your Core 2 is disabled. It's almost impossible though, unless you made it in BIOS by yourself or your PC's CMOS battery is dying and, because of this, corrupted the CMOS BIOS values. But, like I said, it's almost impossible. So, what about some virus?

    3. lost_soul

      lost_soul

Oh yeah, this thing was loaded with malware (its not mine). I got rid of (most) of it. You never know if it is all gone unless you reload the OS though. Stuff like admin tools and all files were hidden. I cleaned that up as well.

  21. You've got to take a moment and appreciate older games that come with pages and pages of documentation on the disk, which teach you how to use the level editor. They even shipped with example levels, showing the features. Man, this industry has changed so much...

  22. lost_soul's half-assed solution of the day: There's a hard drive with over 100 bad sectors, making everything run EXTREMELY SLOW. Instead of swapping out the hard drive, I moved the OS to the later half, away from the bad sectors! Now it runs fast and fine!

    1. Show previous comments  2 more
    2. Bikerdude

      Bikerdude

Oi nutter, replace the drive. If its under warranty get it swapped, if not they are so cheap just buy another one.

    3. OrbWeaver

      OrbWeaver

How old is this drive? Modern drives should remap bad sectors automatically so the OS doesn't even see them.

    4. Lux

      Lux

That could be a harbinger of bricked drive to come.

Also, running a full format on the drive should mark and bad sectors and never write to them so you can use the remainder of the drive but as mentioned above, if its an older drive, it may be going to the grave.

  23. I faked decent looking indirect lighting today in an ancient game engine. Does that mean my mapping skills have increased from complete n00b to novice? (I still CAN'T make a decent looking outside/terrain scene.)

I actually learned something new: You can use a PCX file to create terrain. Do you guys do that in TDM? I can't imagine building each bit of elevation by hand... What you do is have a file where pixels are interprited as height levels by the game engine.

    4. Sotha

      Sotha

I suppose it is similar amount of work, dragging vertices by hand or drawing a heightmap. I would prefer the what-you-see-is-what-you-get type 3d viewport vertice dragging.
