  1. Is there something wrong with the forums lately, or is it my browser? I've been having trouble formatting posts, and just now I couldn't format anything at all.

    I'm using Vivaldi.

Usually I have to: select text, click bold, nothing happens, select again, click bold, then it works.

Same for other stuff, like creating spoilers, bullet points, links. Nothing works the first time.

I have no problem. I use Firefox. @Zerg Rush also uses Vivaldi. Have you tried without extensions, or in another browser?

(btw. bold, italic and underline have shortcut keys: Ctrl B, Ctrl I and Ctrl U, you could try that)

  2. The Dark Mod is hosting an Ask Me Anything thread on the PC Gaming reddit forum:  https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/10nfcwj/hello_we_are_the_international_development_team/

Feel free to join the discussion there :)

That was so cool to go through!

Very effective. There's Thief fans there admitting they never heard of TDM, and now they are trying it. So excellent.

  3. Since Aluminum directed me here ( https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/9082-newbie-darkradiant-questions/page/437/#comment-475263 ) can we have unlimited renderer effects? Well, maybe not unlimited, by maybe 3-5? Thanks.

Since I wasn't the one mainly asking, I'll just cite you in the original thread instead.

There already is a kind of sorting, sort nearest, sort decal, sort <n>. For things like windows and such, sort nearest should probably have the desirable affect, though looking through multiple translucent shaders might kill performance.

    4. Nort

      Nort

Is having multiple render effects really killing performance that badly? I don't understand. You're saying that if I have two transparent objects side-by-side, then they'll just count as two render effects, but when combined, they somehow become something much more difficult to render?

Never-the-less, unless we're talking some kind of infinite portal problem, why not let the mapper choose how much he wants to kill performance? Just warn him against putting too many effects close together.

  4. Woo!! 2.10 Beta "Release Candidate" ( 210-07 ) is out:

    https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/21198-beta-testing-210/

It wont be long now :) ...

  5. I don't think there's a link to thedarkmod.com on forums.thedarkmod.com ...

    1. datiswous

      datiswous

Yeah and the wiki and moddb. It should have those links in the footer I think. Probably easy to add by an admin.

Edit: And a link to the bugtracker. I'm always searching for a post in the forum that links to that because I can't remember the url.

I drew attention to this several times in the last few years. No one payed it any attention, so I just gave up.

Reluctance to improve the forums is matched by reluctance to allow more people to work on it. Talk about trust and power.

  6. https://www.theverge.com/2021/7/15/22578783/valve-steam-deck-gaming-handheld-pc It's about time to play TDM on a 720p handheld Linux PC.
  7. For those of you who have been interested in a wide array of game genres, you may remember the buzz years back for Spore, a game whose online servers shut down not so long ago. Spore was an "evolve your own alien race" game, which got a lot of great publicity and was a lot of fun. I remember a big ad for it in Boston some years back when I visited it on a school trip. Sadly, EA consumed the smaller company that made it, Maxis, and sucked it dry, as it has done to many small game companies. One community within the overarching Spore creator community, started by a user called "Dirtymeat" and 2 others, was Spore UBD, or "Underground By Design". They pushed the engine to the limit to make the normally cutesy game into a horror show, utilizing asymmetrical glitches and other glitches prior to updates that added asymmetry, unique color schemes reminiscent of gore, and unique placement of parts to resemble bones to create mutant abominations. They may have even been responsible for inspiring the later Creepy and Cute parts pack, as well as the spinoff Darkspore. They were usually well received in the community, although there were a few "cute purists" who hated them for making a "cutesy child game" into having a horror subgenres. With the later Galactic Adventures expansion, they were even able to try their hand at horror game adventures within the game.
  8. HI All I was hoping for some advice on a couple of subjects, now to start with the boring stuff (Lol) I'm a guy so i'm useless on this, it's my girlfriends birthday coming up & she has asked for some make up, so I've been looking at these guys but I'm not sure what brands to get, I was hoping to get some advice off some gamer girls (or guys, whatever) her birthdays in 3 weeks & I'm need to get moving on this, classic me leaving it to last minute. Also on a more important topic, my graphics cards so out of date, anyone know where I can get a Quadro RTX 48 GB looking at around a £4000 budget, if there's a cheaper one for similar value to money, I'd love to see it. Thankyou B
  9. I was feeling nostalgic and remembered that as a kid, I had a copy of the first Halo game as a Novel "Combat Evolved", and my school had the two Doom 3 novels in the library. I thus wanted to know, what games would you have loved to have been made into novels? For me, Thief 1 through 3 for sure, with Half Life and Duke Nukem/Serious Sam as well, but also I would have loved a book about some mods as their own stories as well, like They Hunger.
  10. Howdy all, It's time for me to do another hardware upgrade, and this time I'm looking to replace my old Dell Latitude E6410, which is getting a bit long in the tooth now. Considering how you TDM folks are responsible for the awesome gaming desktop I have now (thanks guys!), I thought I might ask for recommendations/advice here again. I'm looking for something that can run TDM, Darkradiant, and especially Unity (the engine I have to use for my graduate degree). Optionally Unreal, but I'm not sure I'll be using that or not. Being able to do some next-gen gaming could potentially be nice too, but I anticipate most of that will be done on my desktop. I'd also appreciate something I can install Windows 7 on without too much fuss, since I do have an extra copy ready to go, but I might bite the bullet and bear with 10 if I absolutely have to... A machine under 4 lbs would also be ideal, since I'll have to commute with the thing a lot. MSI looks like it makes halfway decent laptops, but I've also considered Asus ROG, and had someone at work recommend the Razorblade 14 2017, 1080p. I think I may want to stay away from Alienware, since they seem pretty overpriced. Top budget is probably $1500-ish, but cheaper would be better. Thoughts?
  11. Have you ever had dreams which were basically pure nightmare but you just kept on dreaming, fighting all monsters opposing you and actually enjoyed it? Do you experience dreams with complex plots that ultimately render you a superhero or stuff like that? If so, you might just be a gamer! I for one have very complex and colorful (sometimes even lucid) dreams and they quite frequently have gaming background. Recently the Aliens of Gears of War actually appeared in my dreams, although I hadn't played any Gears of War in years, and I also had the powers of Crysis. The next morning I woke up and thought to myself: "Wow, that was an awesome dream, but should I be worried that so many of my dreams are gaming related?" So I started search the web and on page 1 of google results were already numerous psychology publications about that matter. The following article describes PRECISELY what I am experiencing in my dreams and I am absolutely loving it. http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/21/5330636/video-games-effect-on-dreams That consensus of that article is that the effect of gaming on your dreams is actually a very good thing. They argue that nightmares are there for a reason. They are supposed to train you to react to horrible scenarious and while a regular person would wake up in shock, sweating, a gamer would carry on with his dream and try to find a solution, actually training his unconscious to react properly. I found that very interesting and since there were already some discussions about this here a few years back, I wanted to share this with you guys,
  12. Not so long ago I found what could make a pretty good profile picture and decided to try it out on these new forums. But I couldn't find a button anywhere that would let me change it. I asked on Discord and it seems Spooks also couldn't find anything anywhere. So I logged into an old alternative account and, lo and behold, that account has a button. This is on the first screen I get when I: 1) click on my account name in the top-right of the browser -> 2) click on 'profile'. Compared to my actual account: Are you also missing this button on your account? It'd be very much appreciated if that functionality could be restored to any of the affected accounts.
  13. Hi, I need to know what the code is to use Spoiler Tags. I am using my tablet and I don't have the options to use anything, like spoiler tags, quote tags, text changes etc. Thanks

I use WFC to block all games(and other applications) I play so they don't get access to the internet.

The trouble is that most (all?) games require admin privs to install and play on Windows, at least if you install the official way. At that point, they can do whatever they like to your system. Security needs a redo on the PC, where programs are prohibited from tampering with each other by compartmentalization in the OS.

ESO is mentioned as one of the games which had RedShell. I noticed a quick update which isn't mentioned in the patch notes, so it's got to be RedShell removal.

  14. Hey, I am opening this thread out of curiosity and to gain some insight on what people think of gaming in community outside the internet. I am doing my diploma-work next semester in architecture, and the goal is to design a building of choosen function, preferably a function that stand close to us, or have special interest in. I am thinking of designing an all-around place where one can go for a session of community gaming(be it computer, tabletop or a hybrid), to house competitions and events,a limited shop that sells (gaming)culture-related stuff (mostly 'on order' basis) . I am not thinking of dark rooms with computers and tables and a bar, but a conscious design that is convienent, and tries making gaming in a community a viable option to sitting at home, to make it a different experience. So how would you feel about a place like that in your town,or is it there already? Do you think many people would be interested in using it? Any experiences with places like this? (even from older times) My impression is that the time has come when something like this could be sustainable again. Whenever i read about some tabletop game, there are always a handful of commentators wishing they knew enough local buddies to play it with. Cooperative games and team based games are more popular than ever, but no headset is the same as yelling at each other in the same room. Cloud gaming, steam and other online services makes your own content and data accessible. I've heard friends who complained that they are bored of their social activities generally consisting of getting drunk. That they wish they could go somewhere that interest them, yet makes it possible to be in a close personal community. So , do you think the need for places like that is a real need, the lack of them a problem, or has time passed over this concept and its all about mobilephones and online activities now?
  15. Still spreading the word about TDM on forums to new peops... Funny to see people say "Awesome, I loved playing Thief back in the day!"

Yes it was in a discussion where someone was saying how unhappy they are with the way game companies grant themselves permission to do whatever they like to your PC and personal info today. I pointed out that giving up games completely is an unnecessarily overkill solution when there are free games like TDM to play.

Honestly the mod/Indie genre is still really booming right now. And they aint got no reason to do shady invasive privacy bs.

Also a valid point of view. Unfortunately very few games and game companies try to overcome this dichotomy.

i always thought it was worse for console owners, not only have they got to pay for games and dlc's but they also have to pay a monthly subscription to play and get access to the dlc's they've already paid for.

  16. Installed steam. Now I just wait for The Dark Mod to be released on Steam, now that it's on Greenlight.
  17. Amazon.com has a flash sale on the Logitech G Pro gaming mouse. If you're serious about gaming, it's one of the best mice in the world

I wonder who needs 12.000 DPI. :o I have a Logitech G302, and i set it to 800 DPI in the driver, anything else is like light speed already.

    3. AluminumHaste

      AluminumHaste

No one does, unfortunately they had to include that for the marketing side. I mean the sensor can do it without issue, so why limit it?

      I also run 400, 800 and 1600 on mine.

    4. chakkman

      chakkman

Actually, i just checked, and, i always had it running on 1.200 DPI. :) 12.000 is still excessive, but, of course you have a point there, they probably do it mainly for marketing.
