  1. The devs didn't title this thread, and @datiswous said they're attempting to mislead people by using Russell's name and a retro style to make it resemble Thief, which is cynical. I grew up on forums like I'm sure anyone who likes a game from '98 did. I actually left the Discord immediately after joining it because it was more off-topic doom-posting than anything relevant to the mod. I thought the forums might be better, but it's mostly just grown men yelling at clouds and telling strangers how mature they are, and a few brave souls actually developing anything. Depressing place, I'll just stick to enjoying new missions every 6 months without an account.
  2. True, but, 1. this thread is called "Western stealth FPS with Stephen Russell", and, 2. nothing you said changes anything for me. The gameplay still doesn't look like something I'd enjoy. And, if you really think this forum is cynical, then you don't visit forums much. Actually, the majority of the users are are pretty mature, unlike in other forums.
  3. I would not yet regard gpt as general intelligence but it certainly has aspects of it, and more will emerge in this model or the next I'm sure. Exciting and scary times! Meanwhile another idea occurred to me regarding continuity. I'm going to do a test where I create a conversation with just my fiction rules and possibly the plot summary, etc. then share it publicly. I can then start a new conversation for the story proper and refer it to that shared url every few messages to refresh its memory of the core essentials. I'm not sure the plot is essential actually because even if it deviates from the original plot idea, it could still work. What needs to be constant is the rules, and significant story progress (eg, Mr Johnson died in Chapter 7 so no, he can't be baking bread in Chapter 12!)
  4. Hello! Tracking down information on software and plug-ins that work with D3 / TDM can be a tough. So I have created a thread here where people can post what software/ plug-ins/ tutorials or other references they've had success or failure with in TDM. 3DS MAX 2013 64bit .ase - Default .ASE model exporter works. However you have to open the .ase file in text edit and manual change the *BITMAP line on each material to read something like: "//base/textures/common/collision" which allows the engine to read the correct material path. md5.mesh / animation - Beserker's md5 exporter/importers for 3dsmax. http://www.katsbits.com/tools, Importing and exporting works. The model must be textured, UV'd, with a skin modifier attached to the bones to export. PM me (Kingsal) for help with this. Imported models using the script will not be weighted appropriately, so this is not recommended if you are simply trying to edit existing tdm content. (Use blender instead) MAYA 2011 32bit md5.mesh - So far I've not had any luck with Maya 2011. I am using Greebo's MayaImportx86 for Maya 2011. I've got the importer working however I get a "Unexpected Internal Failure(kFailure)" and the import fails. This could be due to something finicky in Maya that I am not doing correctly. Will keep trying.. Blender 2.7 about - Blender is commonly used and pretty well supported on the forums/ wiki. Various versions may work as well - https://www.blender.org/download/ md5.mesh / animation Blender MD5 importer/exporter (io_scene_md5.zip): https://sourceforge.net/projects/blenderbitsbobs/files/ Sotha's guide Blender Male/ Female rigs by Arcturus - Here Edit by Dragofer: more links found in this post.
  5. Time ago it was discussed here about Hearing Impaired and Hearing Unimpaired modes. Nothing was decided back then and now we have everything. This actually turned to be a good move because code-wise we now have lots of tools at our disposal but, in my opinion, by firing everything at all players we may end up alienating many / most. I want the average player - interested in subtitles - to keep subs enabled and have a good time enjoying the good work done here and elsewhere and I keep working on an alternative: Alt Subtitles for 2.12 v0.1 Background replaced with a (fake) font outline Widget removed (too many things to focus on) Text transparency based on distance (imperfect) Story subs can take up to three slots Barks limited to a single instance Yellow color for story subs (intensity reduced a little from previous attempts) Light grey color for barks It is far from perfect but it may lead to other ideas. Download the pk4 attached to this post and move it to your root folder. I suggest taking the Braeden Church mission for a spin. Delete the pk4 once testing is complete. z_alt_subtitles_v0.1.pk4
  6. Woo!! 2.10 Beta "Release Candidate" ( 210-07 ) is out:

    https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/21198-beta-testing-210/

It wont be long now :) ...

  7. Beta 11 Fix finished-on state auto-update was unreliable Slighty improve scanner title/author detect Tags are now named some whatever regular-version-looking thing to force GitHub to put the newest at the top
  8. I don't think there's a link to thedarkmod.com on forums.thedarkmod.com ...

    1. datiswous

      datiswous

Yeah and the wiki and moddb. It should have those links in the footer I think. Probably easy to add by an admin.

Edit: And a link to the bugtracker. I'm always searching for a post in the forum that links to that because I can't remember the url.

    2. Petike the Taffer

      Petike the Taffer

I drew attention to this several times in the last few years. No one payed it any attention, so I just gave up.

Reluctance to improve the forums is matched by reluctance to allow more people to work on it. Talk about trust and power.

  9. Ooooh so many interesting ideas! We had a similar story at one point, where the player has to pose as an acolyte and investigate the death of the former high priest, talking to several members, finding a way to enter the restricted area... After a while setting up all the triggers and conversations and scripts turned into a huge PITA - although it was quite funny to start a conversation and then walk off, having them talk to thin air I'll see to it that our story is not too similar. Although also placing our mission in the same universe and have some familiar characters appear (or at least being mentioned) would be a nice idea. I like stories with multiple possible endings Looks like I have to (re)play some TDM missions then. Mmh, we do have a library, but it is probably too small for such a degree of labyrinthinity.
  10. Yet another Stone 24 pt Update. This removes stray marks to the left of G (as well as char 249, u with accent grave), visible with textscale 0.25 but not 0.24. So this may or may not benefit subtitles, but it will definitely help Stone font readables. Most of them use a scale of 0.25 for body text. An attempt was made to also improve G spacing, but (since xSkip can't be changed) effect is marginal at best. fontImage_24.dat of Feb 27
  11. True. Regarding this dynamic design, it could be argued that we should ignore the Acquired field (Inventory Pickup Message), since messages there are shown rarely, and not at all if the user turns it off. Instead, place the low subtitle slot just above the breath bar. Then all the subtitles slots would be lower. However, this would increase overlap with the corners, unless some mitigation was done. That could be done engine-side, if the slot-fill priority was changed to, e.g., middle-slot first, low-slot last. So the conflict-prone low-slot becomes rarely used. Other mitigating ideas - - move the Acquired field to the top, right under the Objectives Message field - do away with the Acquired field, and instead deliver its message using the subtitle mechanism (possibly with color markup or a different font than regular subtitles). This would require an engine enhancement, to generate a subtitle given a runtime-assembled string, without any sound file.
  12. guys thanks for all your help. I bought a NIPOGI mini pc and everything runs fine on the intel UHD graphics card. Thanks again
  13. Subtitle Edit ( https://www.nikse.dk/subtitleedit ) now has support for subtitle extraction via Whisper. See https://www.nikse.dk/subtitleedit/help#audio_to_text . This works well on Windows. In the extraction window you can download all the needed extra dependencies the first time you use it. After the generation of the srt files, you can use the editor to tweak the files, or move to a seperate editor of your choice (including texteditors). Aperantly it also works under Linux: https://www.nikse.dk/subtitleedit/help#linux If it doesn't, see info above to use the commandline in Linux. Kdenlive ( https://kdenlive.org ) now also has Whisper subtitle extraction build in. This works well in Windows, but I couldn't get it working in Linux. You have to go to Settings > Configure Kdenlive. Then go to section Speech to text. On top of the window you select option Whisper. Then you have to install some stuff by clicking on an install button (this doesn't work in Linux currently). The extraction via cpu is considered slow, but I thought it's not so bad using an 8th generation i3 processor during a test with a large speech file. You can afaik only do this one by one, so it's not as fast.
  14. It wasn't that hard to find anyway. The code isn't so hard to find anyway and so no need to enter a second time in the Mansion, after asking the Girl. Despite these small misconceptions, eg regarding the second "secret" it is an excellent mission, although it also leaves room to expand the plot in some update in the future.
  15. Most things are straightforward once you know how it works. Yes, I also noticed that the lightgem is mentioned in other articles. Sure, the article "The Dark Mod Gameplay" gives a brief description, but that article is the 5th hit when searching for "lightgem", and it is not exhaustive. Being such a central object to the gameplay, a dedicated article seems warranted. One other article already links to "lightgem": https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Special:WhatLinksHere/Lightgem If there was (unexpected) solid opposition to a dedicated article, I'd create a redirect to the relevant section in "The Dark Mod Gameplay" to help wiki readers find it faster. But the topic was not a request for an article about the lightgem (or any other request for a single change), it was a request for an account on the wiki so I can help out with documentation. Who/where can I ask for an account?
  16. With TDM 2.12, after the credits finished, the "Mission Complete" screen did not display. I found that the screen was black and I could hear my footsteps when I tried to move around. I think the reason for the mission not completing successfully was that the "Do not kill or harm allies" objective was never marked as "1 = STATE_COMPLETE" instead it was left as "0 = STATE_INCOMPLETE". Note, I didn't use noclip throughout the mission. Same as: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/18054-fan-mission-the-accountant-2-new-in-town-by-goldwell-20160509/&do=findComment&comment=458491
  17. How about using TDM automation framework (and maybe pcem/qemu)? More info see: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/19828-automation-features-and-discussion/

  19. OK, after discovering a gpt-4 account can be cancelled anytime (and even renovated later) I decided 20-odd dollars was worth investing to explore it. I found it fascinating but my main interest was fiction writing and I found although gpt-4 was creative and its grammar perfect, it's continuity was flawed with anything longer than maybe a couple of thousand words because amazingly it cannot recall precisely all the text even in one conversation. Somehow it condenses earlier messages and the further you get into a story the more I get forgets stuff, like Mr Johnson comes into the room. Erm... didn't Mr Johnson die in Chapter 3? This only applies if you try to help chatgpt-4 to write a story rather than get chatgpt-4 help YOU to write a story. That's different. Anyway, I've not given up trying to find a workaround, and in the meantime, gpt-4 now provides internest access via Bing. This is even better than Phind. You can type all sort of instructions in and get gpt-4 to do the searching like so: User: OK. please search for advice on getting chatgpt-4 to write a long story. List the first 10 website articles. Omit any that only help the user write a story, and only list those where the user helps chatgpt-4 to write the story. Abandon processing any websites that give errors such as failing to access and instead display here the link, then continue searching. If you can't find 10 articles within 10 minutes, then stop Chatgpt-4: I'm sorry, I wasn't able to fully complete your request. However, I've gathered some useful information. I found an article titled "How to Write a Novel With ChatGPT (Ultimate Guide in 2023)" on WritingBeginner.com. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to use ChatGPT to write a novel. This guide includes 13 steps, such as: 1. Asking ChatGPT to suggest a genre and subgenre. 2. Using ChatGPT to come up with a story premise. 3. Expanding the premise into a back cover blurb with the help of ChatGPT. 4. Creating an outline from the blurb with ChatGPT's help【74†source】【75†source】【76†source】【77†source】【78†source】. I spent quite a bit of time exploring the details of this guide, which may be helpful if you're looking to use an AI like ChatGPT to assist with writing a long story. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find 10 separate articles that specifically discuss how to help ChatGPT-4 write a long story, as per your request. The search results included a mix of different kinds of articles, and it took a significant amount of time to explore each one to determine its relevance. I'll list the URLs of the remaining pages that seemed potentially relevant, but I wasn't able to fully explore them within your time limit: 1. https://www.artificial-intelligence.blog/news/how-to-write-a-story-with-gpt-3 2. https://www.wired.com/story/ai-language-models-biggest-challenge-yet-long-form-content/ 3. https://www.writersdigest.com/be-inspired/how-artificial-intelligence-can-help-authors-write-a-better-novel 4. https://www.fastcompany.com/90697938/this-is-how-a-i-will-help-you-write-your-next-novel 5. https://towardsdatascience.com/writing-with-gpt-3-turning-prompts-into-novels-ba1d109b2a6f 6. https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/03/20/104107/artificial-intelligence-is-now-writing-novels-heres-an-example/ Please note that the relevance of these articles to your specific request is uncertain since I wasn't able to fully assess them within your time limit. As for the technical question about Chrome updates, the latest version of Google Chrome as of June 8, 2023, is 112.0.5615.137/138 for Windows and Mac, and 112.0.5615.165 for Linux【47†source】. I hope this information is helpful, and I apologize for not being able to fully meet your initial request. End... This will change searching the net forever! It's like having an assistant to do the legwork.
  20. Just finished it on Expert! I really, really loved the start. Sneaking through the wilderness was very atmospheric and there was lots of loot around, it's like every corner had something to find and there was no empty space. The manor after was also well crafted, with just enough guards, lots of loot to steal, and enough readables to flesh out the characters. After knocking everyone out, I took my time to explore the place. The plot was fun to follow - a simple premise that offers something more than merely robbing the rich guy, as the player has to assassinate someone as well as save their sibling. Thanks!
  21. I suggest you use the term "I", to make clear that it is something YOU want, and that you speak for yourself. But, as wesp5 mentioned, I don't really know what this is about, at all. And, I'm also wondering about all the newly registered people lately, who just arrived at this forum, and already want to revolutionize this mod. This is a thing I noticed 2 or 3 years ago, and which hasn't been present in the 15 years I play this mod and frequent these forums now. Really seems like a common thing these days, to not knock on the door, but kick it in, and stomp right in.
  22. I dom't use it, i found it here with the filter set to OpenSource. the TOS and PP isn't excluding for an OpenSource app, if they use ads mean that they also need to pay an server for this online service. OpenSource is not synonymous with free either, perhaps after the beta phase it is no longer free, so perhaps you can take advantage of the fact that it is still free to create a series of textures that can be used or search another one in Futuretools. AI generated textures and assets, by definition, don't have any copyright, so you can use them as you want. https://www.futuretools.io/?pricing-model=free|open-source&tags-n5zn=gaming
  23. TDM has tons of textures from "free" texture resources that do not allow redistribution and cannot be incorporated into a commercial project. Someone would need to create a huge replacement pack of textures that do not break the look of existing missions and do not infringe on the copyrighted textures. Also, many artists who contributed to this project do not want 3rd party entities to use their work in commercial projects. They intended the models, textures, sounds, animations to be exclusively used for Darkmod content. You would either have to replace ALL assets or contact every contributor and ask them to re-license their assets. Many contributors are no longer active with the project and haven't visited the forums in years so it would be no easy feat. I cannot speak to Debian policy but I think that they treat installers that add non-free content the same as non-free content itself. One could argue that Steam is such an installer but I guess Debian would counter that there are a few fully Libre games on Steam. I think Debian, Ubuntu, or Linux Mint need to consider a repo that allows for games (etc) that include non-libre content but intentionally offer this content for free to the community with no stipulations other than "don't try to sell it as a product".
  24. The gamepad implementation allows for a great degree of flexibility to personalize settings, aside from a few minor issues that I mentioned here: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22337-gamepad-bindings/ I would say that playing TDM with a gamepad works very well, especially considering that it was implemented as experimental and hasn't been changed since then. If I could, I'd go back to 2021-you and congratulate you on buying that gamepad. I notice that your DarkmodPadbinds.cfg looks very different from mine...
