  1. Yes, definitely needs to be distinguishable. Clear glass with light bulb visible would be the best way: You know that if you see clear glass and the bulb inside you can shoot it. The distinction isn't always possible to make without first trying it out though... paintings are the best example, you always need to get close to see if a painting can be looted. As for players learning about this, we should add those lights to the tutorial level where the basics of TDM are taught: In one of the hallways we'd have examples with the message "solid lights can't be shot, but ones with fragile glass and a lightbulb can be broken with broadhead arrows", the player is given arrows and can shoot at different lamps to compare. As for explosive barrels those would be cool to have too! In their case they should already be doable with a script, just that no one's ever done them: Remove the barrel, spawn the same explosion as the fire arrow or mine, and some temporary lasting physical debris if possible. Breakable lights would need support added to the builtin spawnfunc.
  2. Our friend Skacky ( and his team "Feuillade Industries" ) has released a full sized Thief expansion \ campaign "The Black Parade": https://www.moddb.com/mods/thief-the-black-parade t is finally here! After 7-ish years of development, The Black Parade is finally released. So, what awaits you in this campaign? - 10 huge, open-ended and meticulously crafted missions with varied themes packed with content. - A brand new protagonist thrown into a dark, intricately woven story of crime and conspiracies. - 4 new tools happily supplied by the undermarket, at a price. - Many tweaks to the AI to make the game a bit more challenging but still fair. - A brand new "banter" system where AIs greet each other during their rounds and nightly life. - 28 voiced characters totaling roughly 1,800 new lines of dialogue. - 30 minutes of gorgeous hand-drawn briefings and cutscenes. - Brand new AI motions making the denizens of The City look more alive. - Full English subtitles. In The Black Parade you play the character of Hume, a hardened criminal who was sent into exile as a punishment for his crimes. The year is 833, you are now back in The City, a sprawling metropolis of soot-caked brick, greasy fumes and noisy machinery, with many a sinister conspiracy whispered behind closed doors. Lost and without a penny to your name, you are back to your life of thievery and must find your old associate Dahlquist. Shadows and silence are your allies. Light is your enemy. Stealth and cunning are your tools. And the riches of others are yours for the taking. The Black Parade aims at being a love letter to Thief: The Dark Project, and we hope we succeeded! It is recommended to have played through Thief: The Dark Project and/or Thief 2: The Metal Age at least once beforehand, since these missions are overall tougher than the base game. The Black Parade also comes with a few tweaks to the classic Thief gameplay formula: - Hume is not a Keeper and thus never received Garrett’s training: AIs will now notice you if they bump into you or vice versa, sometimes even in a perfect shadow. Be careful! - Hume can move banners aside instead of having to slash them. - Hume has additional footstep sounds for chains and pipes; these are metal sounds that aren’t as noisy as regular metal (about as noisy as stone/wood). - Water arrows can now be used to expand moss patches. - Servants will re-light extinguished torches on higher difficulty levels. - Servants may clean moss on the floor if they notice it on higher difficulty levels. - Zombies now smash wooden doors open instead of simply opening them. - Electric lanterns carried by guards can be turned off. - A few guards in the campaign are outfitted with heavy armor and helms so they cannot be knocked out using the Blackjack. - Hume can pick up small creature corpses such as spiders or sweels. DOWNLOAD (912 MB) MIRROR 1 MIRROR 2 Here is a very handy guide by nicked on how to set up Thief Gold for Fan Missions. !!!IMPORTANT NOTES!!! The Black Parade requires NewDark 1.26 or above! Make sure you use the latest version of TFix/TFix Lite before playing! The Black Parade should be launched with FMSel, NewDarkLoader or AngelLoader. It is not recommended to launch this campaign with DarkLoader or GarrettLoader. Note that mods such as Thief Gold HD Mod, NecroAge or Enhancement Pack are not compatible with this campaign. Remember that this is a campaign for THIEF GOLD, not Thief 2! Known issues: - Due to the complexity of the missions, there can be cases where some NPCs might get stuck walking against walls. There is unfortunately not much that can be done about this. Happy 25th anniversary to Thief: The Dark Project, and have fun taffers!
  3. Plan B in case Joebarnin cannot get it right with immobilizations. By Any Other Name: attached to this post are the Bow/Arrow, Blackjack and Shortsword scripts updated to 2.12. I didn't take any liberties. Blame snatcher if something isn't right. @joebarnin, @stgatilov z_byanyothername_212_scripts.pk4
  4. That's the exact one I meant. I've tried it in my FM (a wait node converted into a follow node), but it doesn't seem to work once the character reaches the spot where it's supposed to trigger. The character just stands and waits in place, as usual or as with the wait node. Well, I don't really need a follow node in the FM I'm currently making, so I'll still have plenty of time to wait until a fully functional follow node becomes available. (There's also some potential path node workarounds if it doesn't get resolved, anyway.) Thanks, Amadeus. Interesting. The FM I might make in the future that might need the follow type node is still really far away, so it's unimportant now.
  5. I'm assuming we're talking about Stone 24pt font here, used in subscripts & elsewhere. Images of letters are arranged into a bitmap by a process that doesn't have to conform to a tidy alphabetic grid. See Figure 2 of my new article https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Font_Bitmaps_in_DDS_Files In the figure, you can see there's an accented "a" to the left of the W, whose foot is presumably within W's bounding box. I think I looked at this earlier & concluded that I couldn't shrink W's bounding box enough in the DAT file. So probably the pixels of the W need to be moved to the right... I haven't tried such surgery yet.
  6. Nothing regarding the skin, though I didn't have much time to look this morning. Sure! The map is "talents", and you should be able to find the proper models/skins from the post above. File size was too big, despite compression. Here's a file containing the models and skins. You should be able to find the related ones using the directories in previous posts. models and skins.7z
  7. In case anyone decides to pursue this further, here are a couple more references: https://discourse.gnome.org/t/pointer-warping-on-wayland/9197 https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland-protocols/-/issues/158 Seems like this feature is also common in PCB design software. The "correct" solution would be to use Wayland's pointer locking interface and relative mouse events, which is essentially what the FreezePointer class accomplishes by continuously warping the pointer back to its original location. The complication is that the way it works now all goes through wxwidgets which then goes through gtk3 on Linux. To fully implement this, I think someone would have to: Create a platform-specific alternative to the cross-platform FreezePointer that we have now Make sure it's only called on Wayland, and only if the pointer locking API is available Work your way through the wxwidgets / gtk3 layers to get hold of the native wayland surface and pointer handles Reconcile the Wayland mouse events with the mouse events received by wxwidgets If someone was motivated enough to pick this up, it might make sense to try to build this in at the wxwidgets level and try to get it accepted there. It would help keep platform-specific code in the right place and also make a couple other projects happy.
  8. Wasn't "Megatextures" the reason Doom 2016 (IdTech 6) takes years to load though, even on a high-class SSD? I've then heard that Megatextures were scrapped out in Doom Eternal (IdTech 7), which apparently could add to the fact it loads incredibly fast.
  9. Yeah it's not an easy to go option, more like an inspiration. There's always lots of artifacts and inconsistencies which take so much time to fix that it is nearly the same time to create images as painting them by yourself if you have an eye for detail. I tried it for creating textures too and it worked pretty well (I think it was dalle 2 back in the day last year). Most difficult part was making it seamless. I think the time it took for rerolling prompts was nearly the same as searching for stock textures though. But the results were as least as good as stock textures. A thing I couldn't say about artwork. There's no coherent style or consistent features for story actors. I would say you didn't miss anything of value. We'll see what the future holds.

    2016+ CPU/GPU News

Well, the 7600 XT is considered sus for putting 16 GB on 128-bit, but it clearly works in some scenarios. Also IIRC GDDR7 will have about +30% bandwidth over GDDR6X right out of the gate, rising to about +100% as the generation progresses. Big caches (Infinity Cache L3 for AMD, lots of L2 for Nvidia) have made smaller bus widths more viable, and I think they have improved compression techniques and other factors over time to help alleviate bandwidth demands. There's already a little bit of analysis of what we can expect to see in RDNA3+ and RDNA4, very technical though: https://chipsandcheese.com/2024/02/04/amd-rdna-3-5s-llvm-changes/ I am eager to see if AMD is bold enough to do (or allow AIBs to put) 32 GB on the top RDNA4 card, which has long been rumored to be slower than the 7900 XTX in raster, but will hopefully beat it in raytracing and other areas such as AI/ML perf. And I think that card will have a 256-bit bus and 16 GB memory normally.
  11. So the sound has full volume on distances up to minDistance, and no volume at distances above maxDistance. I have not found any special meaning for maxDistance = 0 in the code, so I assume such a sound will never be heard due to zero volume. Also, there are some default values littered around the code. Most importantly, sound shader gets minDistance = 1 and maxDistance = 10 by default. Also I think I have seen min=0, max = 10 somewhere in the code. There is little difference between minDistance = 1 and minDistance = 0. Mostly the difference is that fading does not happen within 1 meter of the sound source. Supposedly, setting minDistance = maxDistance = 0 will cause sound to be completely muted. If you want a sound to always have full volume, I think you should set e.g. minDistance = maxDistance = 1000. Of perhaps set "global" flag instead, which disables distance computation completely. Although this probably has different effect (like maybe global sound passes through walls too). Or if you want it to be sharply disabled at 10 meters, then set minDistance = maxDistance = 10... but I see no point in sounds that can be disabled based on distance without any fade. Finally, as I have described at the very beginning of the post, "minDistance" "0" as spawnarg has no effect on current TDM versions. I don't see mindistance/maxdistance settings in these two prefabs in SVN. Maybe this were the issues that someone fixed recently. Or... could it be that you confuse spawnargs with sound shader settings? Actually, I don't see the distance settings on sound shaders either.
  12. Here's mine, also 3 monitors but I only use 2 for DR: single XY view on the first monitor; switch between XY views using CTRL-Tab Camera and all other tools on 2nd monitor - now that everything is a tab no need to tile everything 3rd monitor for other non-DR stuff (like the forum )
  13. yeah its a jungle out there but a 12 gb card on a 128 bit bus would only be viable with dlss and then only just . but there will probably be plenty of options as you mention though id still go for something that would atleast be able to drag the ammount of vram without workarounds. strangely the old amd R9 390 had a 512 bit bus and could probably have accepted 32 gb vram but the card is to slow to do 4k in modern titles. even so the 8 gb model actually ran quite nicely in games such as the first horizon in 4K but would probably choke and die on forbidden west . minor wtf moment is crysis remastered it runs it at 4k in can it run crysis with a gazillion fps looks quite purty to but i suspect this is a bug.
  14. According to the user list on the wiki , there are five bureaucrats: * Greebo * Modetwo * Springheel * Taaaki * WikiAdmin My best guess would be that @taaaki has access to the servers that are running the bugtracker, the forum and the wiki. For the sake of community growth, I would also propose a more streamlined process for new users to get a wiki account. Make it easy for new contributors to contribute.
  15. If you can do this, I don't know how. But it's something I want as well and was actually going to raise it as a feature request. I think speakers are spherical so they model real sound which radiates from a source outwards. I find this doesn't work so well with some scenarios though: water. For example you want to hear the sound of waves lapping a shoreline or a running water sound for a stream, river or canal. If the shoreline or stream is on the longer side, you have to have a speaker with a huge radius to cover it and the sounds extends too far along perpendicular to the body of water. Or alternatively multiple speakers but then you have to manage overlap and it becomes a pain. wind. Same idea but vertical - if you have a long edge or balcony then you need a large radius speaker to cover it and it might extend too low so you hear wind noises on the ground. @Petike the Taffer If all you want is for a sound to fill a room, just use the location system ambients instead. But you can only have one sound I think, so you couldn't have say your ambient music and also a weather sound at the same time without using a speaker for one of them.
  16. Right now it cannot be done (the way I think you picture it) but mission details could be made available by the developers for modding ... In the meantime: Use AngelLoader (the one tool for all your mission management needs) Use the Unofficial Patch (or parts of) Raise your voice here Set the language to Italian (ah!) Build your own executable
  17. Walked through the mission. As everyone else here had some problems with the books puzzle. Also, opened the secret entrance to the laboratory through the wall, with the lever on the other side. Had to replay to open it with a prober books alignment. Otherwise, a very interesting short mission.
  18. I notice that what Blender does is not lock or hide the mouse cursor, but allows it to move, then snaps it back to the other side of the window so you can drag infinitely in one direction. I.e. if you are dragging to the left, when the cursor reaches the left-hand window edge, it immediately re-appears at the right-hand window edge and continues moving to the left. I wonder if re-writing the code to use the Blender approach would solve the problem? Perhaps the back-end code can handle instantaneously changing the mouse pointer position more reliably than trying to lock it in place.
  19. There might be another way, or at least it's what I thought of as a non-developer: Use a different way to transform mouse movement into camera rotation or viewport offset. Is there no alternative to calculating the distance from the pointer to the window center before resetting the pointer to the middle? There must be other mouse look implementations that could work. Most obvious alternative: We can detect how much the pointer moved on the screen compared not to the center, but to its previous position wherever that may be. While of course still trying to lock it in the middle, but if that fails at least it doesn't cause the view to go crazy: The only issue then will be the cursor reaching the screen edge and having to be re-engaged so you can keep scrolling in that direction, which is also a big annoyance but comparatively less bad and not as noticeable unless you do long-range movements in one go. Any reason why we couldn't give this option a try?
  20. Enjoyed it. Got lost a few times, but only because I couldn't remember where the last locked door was. (even though it's the only door that has a consistent guard next to it) The only real complaint - the music is way too loud. It's fitting, but too loud. I couldn't hear my own footsteps! Also, I have no idea how I'm supposed to yoink that other key (not that I needed it) off the guard sitting outside. He doesn't move at all, and he's got that brown eye pointed directly at me. Also, from lore perspective, how the hell did we climbed up the cliffs? No rope, no nothing. Maybe add some sort of grappling hook laying on the snow?
  21. Interesting idea. Not sure about my upcoming time availability to help. A couple of concerns here - - I assume the popup words uses the "Informative Texts" slot, e.g., where you might see "Acquired 80 in Jewels", so it likely wouldn't interfere with that or with already-higher subtitles. - There are indications that #str is becoming unviable in FMs; see my just-posted: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22434-western-language-support-in-2024/
  22. Since due to the nature of this forum, file/image sharing is used quite frequently, I thought to present some alternatives to the widely used Gdrive, which I don't like so much, especially since the last TOS change. File Sharing To share large files there are several options that also do not require registration. The first is File Hosting Online, which supports files up to 25 Gb, encrypted and also includes a Virus Scan that ensures safe use Another good option is Gofile, free to use, privacy focused and unlimited Bandwith. No refistry needed. While the files are accesed or downloaded at least one time a week, they are never deleted, otherwise inactive files are deleted after 10 days. If you prefer to use P2P, that means to share files directly from PC to other, without a hoster in the middle, there are also very good options, which permits to share files and folders without limites of type and size. The most easy to use is O&O File Direct, a small Desktop app (sadly only Windows), very easy to use 1 Open the app and drag the files/folders you like to share in its window 2 Optional adjust the days and amount of permited downloads and if you want a password 3 Share the link which apears in the app Done The only limits are, that the receptor only can download your files, when your PC is online, on the other hand this permits that you can stop the download in any moment, going offline or shutting down the PC. The other limit is, that the files to share can't be in a protected folder. Her are an Example with a list of Search Enines (Html file 423,56 Kb). While I am online, you can download it https://file.direct/f/pmjVFnjfkjFTKTt5 Videos One of the best options is Streamable (need a free account, inactive videos are deleted after 90 days in the free version) Alternatively you can use Streamja, a simple Video sharer with good privacy, free account optional (nick, mail) Images Ok, there are a lot of Image sharer, most used the known Imgur, because of this I add only one which offers some advantages over Imgur. ImgBox (free account) is a reliable platform to share and host images like Imgur, but it make it very easy to upload and post dozend of images simultaneous, selecting all the images you want and drag them on the window, offering coresponding bulk codes from the selected images to post them with one click for forums (BBcode), Html and others, fullsize or thumbnails. More since Imgur used since some time the hated webm formats for gif images, hardly accepted in most forums.
  23. This might be frowned onto by tdm mappers/veterans, but I find it strange that it's considered ok to use text inside entities, which can then be found inside map files. That in general seems badly organised. Like for example with text decals: https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Text_Decals_for_Signs_etc.#The_Decal Personally I think xdata could/should be used for all instances of text (except maybe darkmod.txt and subtitles), including readme files and GUI files. Or at least some kind of external text file. Could be something else, but the xdata format seems good and supported. So the sign text prefab could have a default xdata_contents spawnarg instead of gui_parm1 . Edit: Objective description text is also inside an entity inside the map file, but it could just as well be a reference to an xdata file. I posted about this before, here:
  24. I wasn't really thinking about cohesiveness. i was trying to give the game a more Golden touch like in DXHR. I'm using Cinetool Lut which has many options for color combination. Each one makes the game look and feel different and it's a great Reshade Tool.
  25. I got lost multiple times. It was my fault, but I had to literally jump off the roof to find my way back. The Exorcist room was neat, even if the trigger works from the room next door. What I thought was going to happen when I finished the optional objective, is that all the enemies will be gone (since I thought they're kept there by the book) when nothing happened I was disappointed. Hoped to put things to rest, so to speak. The atmosphere was great, the coffin was a nice touch, I loved that. I really struggled with the Map quest, however. I searched the room top to bottom multiple times, so I guess the readable was correct =D I found it, eventually, but man it was such a curveball.
