Saw this over on TTLG, looks like there has been an unofficial fan patch released for Thief 2, it fixes a whole big bunch of stuff, most notably fixes that allow T2 to work on more modern hardware, and brings all sorts of new capabilities to Dromed. Likely this has been built from the source code leak that was discovered a couple of years ago.

Funny how the README says "it is unofficial" but every other poster says "if this is legit". How can it be legit if it's unofficial?

Also amazing is the reaction of people when Thief gets features that TDM had for years. Wish we'd get this kind of reaction when we release an update ;)

By "legit" I think they just mean "does it actually work?" As far as features go, you know how it is, some people just prefer Thief over TDM, and for them, this brings Thief a little closer to modern day.

I think "legit" stands for "legal/legitim", and they are just using wishful thinking in the sense of "I hope it is legal, but I use it anyway". Anyway, I know people prefer Thief, I just can't follow their train of thoughts anymore :)

I wouldn't touch the system shock 2 update, its owned by EA and they get rather touchy when anyone touches their games illegaly.

I've always thought that EA's Deadspace is an evolution version of system shock.

Yeah, but how would they even know if YOU used it? Given the anonymous release and age of the games, I think it's safe to say not many folks in the thief/SS community care much about the legality, they're more interested in the functionality at this point.

Some of the improvements are astonishing, its going to allow much more detailed and realistic looking missions than were possible before.

One thing though, does this mean we wont need to use DDfix anymore..?

Wow, thats great. thanks for posting. :D All these beautyful resolutionentries. ^_^

@Bikerdude: I have had a look at it in a hexeditor and I found an entry for d3dx9_43.dll and of course none for ddfix.

Yep it is real. Afaik as I know it has been in developement for over a year. And yes, it makes DDfix redundant. Don't know how well it'll work with HRes texture packs though.

- Increased the maximum number of visible on-screen terrain polies from 1024 to 20480

Guys, this is incredible! I can't wait for the first FM to be released that makes use of this new version!

So is there a performance increase for say... King's Story / Mission X / Lord Alan's Factory?

- Added mousewheel support to options menu

- Fixed sound cap per schema type bug and upped max sound channels to 48

- Added the ability to detach from ladders by crouching

- Improved mantling a bit and added optional new mantling algorithm with lower failure rate

- Added "Blocks frobs" property, allowing objects to block frobs of objects behind them (e.g. to stop frobbing items through safe doors)

- Added option to left-align map notes text

- Increased limit X from Y to Z.

- DromEd will no longer stop working after 03:14:07 on Tuesday, 19 January 2038

- I was sure the mousewheel worked before. Maybe it's for System Shock

- How many sound channels was it before (looks like 16)? Sounds sick. inb4 4096 guard army

- Nice.

- I'm thinking this isn't going to be as good as TDM's crouching, just a little more wiggle room for positioning.

- Nice for mappers.

- What was it before? Center align?

- T2 1.19, beyond limits.

- Y2K38 problem averted.

Anyway, I can find the time to play both TDM and some T2.

I didn't think they had the sourcecode compiling yet, but I'm not in the loop so can't be sure what they're up to.

I'd imagine the French guy that posted the original link is either the one that worked on it or at least part of the team working on it, but apparently he hasn't said anything since.

Well the improvements are all pretty big things. Well done, whoever did this.

I remember running into the 1024 poly limit so many times before. Bumping that up 20-fold alone is worth its weight in loot.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

The mousewheel worked, but only if you edited the ini. Also, this has modifier keys.

No more torture of invideo (or whatever it's called).

Good that they followed the common sense advice of staying quiet and deniable.

Huh? Why would DromEd stop working in 2038?

It has an internal clock that goes to something like 32 significant digits or whatever it is, which I guess is in milliseconds, and if it went to the 33rd digit it'd crash. That just happens to happen sometime in 2038. It's something like that. You can google it.

It's good to see stuff like this.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. Yes, yes, yes!

But now we need a global integration with DDfix features!

And THAT will be Thief 2 immortal edition :D

I'm a bit morbidly curious how many people will start mega-projects now which never get completed due to the lack of clear boundaries.

from what i've read, its more like people are breaking existing projects back out that would never see the light of day due to limitations, to finally complete them. or updating existing FM's with new features. but yea, theres going to be a 1.19 contest, so who knows.

I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.
