This discussion came up a wile ago and IIRC the devs were planning to keep the name. I kinda agree with them. It will still be (technically) a mod. After all, it is based on modified Doom 3 code.

Besides, right now, we have a good name. Google "The Dark Mod", and its the first thing you get. Some other games/projects use dumb names that occur frequently and that can sometimes be confused with a different product.

We have already problems creating the next version of TDM, nobody around here has time to do all the work associated with changing the name on top of that. Think domain names, logos, thousands of wiki articles, the in-game GUI etc etc. Plus, the code references "darkmod" a lot. So, a name change is not gonna happen.

When I thought about this, I felt that keeping the name could be rationalized away since TDM will ultimately continue to be a "modification" of Doom 3, regardless of how widely it diverges (it's already a "total conversion"). Plus the branding is somewhat well known, having appeared in magazines, etc.

don't forget

DE = Dark Engine

DR = Dark Radiant

While it might be a different engine a lot of the new additions like Source/receptrons were built to mimick Dromed.

Exactly, but also...

TDP = The Dark Project

TMA = The Metal Age

TDS = Thief Deadly shadows

TDM = The Dark Mod

Seems T and D have to be in it, anyway :D

Not fair, TMA doesn't have a D and was better than TDS.

Maybe we just took the D from T1 and the M from T2.

TDS = The Dark Standalone :D

Nee, let's stay with TDM. Everybody is used to it and it's like Sotha said: remember the roots. ^_^

Fair enough. Only downside I can think of is that people still would think it requires some other game and don't bother to download.

When TDM is finally stand alone, people should not have any issues If they read. I'm sure we'll take great care in clarifying that stand alone means, you don't need Doom 3. In any case, we can't baby everyone.

The *totally* not Garrett *wink wink* mod of medieval stealth and thieving. =P

But seriously, this is The Dark Mod, everyone knows that and that's always been the name, can't break tradition now. :)

My Box here says "Dark Project II The Metal Age", which would be DPIITMA :D (No seriously, I can make a photo of the box if you like)

We shall not forget our origins! The name TDM carries all that with it.

I agree with Sotha. Never forget where you come from. That it started out as a mod and is now going standalone is a testement to all of the hard work The Dark Mod team has put in over the years.

;) Thought I just link a google image search result, but this one appears only in very small varieties, and also, there seem to be multiple boxes. The box for Thief is trapezoid, while the second is not, even tho it seem it was sold in such a box, too. I instead own this one:

The entire box doesn't seem to mention "Thief" at all :ph34r:

Well, actually the first part was called Dark Project: Der Meisterdieb in germany, so at least their thief was included. I guess it wasn't used in germany as most people here don't know how to pronounce th. :D (Me, too btw.)

did you see the T4 video? They kept calling it Teef (French Canadian).

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

      The preliminary working titles for the missions in my now-in-development Partners in Crime series:
      - Partners in Crime 1: A Mere Trinket
      - Partners in Crime 2: Beacon Burglary
      - Partners in Crime 3: In the Bleak Midwinter
      - Partners in Crime 4 (5 ?): Fishy Dealings
      - Partners in Crime 5 (4 ?): A Thief in the Night

      No title stealing, please.  In return, I promise to finish these. I do stress the preliminary part. Beyond the broad strokes storyline, plot, objectives, briefings and the (currently built) layouts of these FMs, I haven't fully decided about every single detail yet, including the exact order of the missions (4 and 5 might switch places, with the story adjusted accordingly). I want the overall plot to be plotted out a bit in advance and not suffer too much from inserting prequels later. I also prefer to let my FM building fill out part of the details naturally.

      Currently working on the second FM, and once I do enough work on the current prototype, I'll work on the first one, until I get that one released. Then complete the second one, get that one ready for release (hopefully) a few months later, and so on. I want most of the early missions to be fairly small and confined, and get a bit bigger as I grow more confident in my FM making skills.

      Though there is an overarching storyline to this series, the missions themselves are mostly episodic in nature. They factor into the character development of the two main characters I'll have in the series, but it's the kind of continuity where the mission's own plot and story wouldn't depend on it.
