TDM 2.06 issues...

sorry for late reply. Unfortunately, i am still getting that crash after following your suggestion @nbohr1more.

 

@bikerdude I have gt 240 using latest driver 342.01

 

Also like i said before, i've been playing with these settings since darkmod became standalone,playing lots of mission; so there must be something wrong.

 

Maybe i will try it on Ubuntu later.

You don't have to use FXAA in the global settings. You can use application settings (not sure about the English name) and choose TDM exe from the dropdown list, so it works just for TDM.

Shadow Quality just changes the transition gradients.   If you want the "look" to change, try r_softShadowsRadius 5.0 or any other value than 1.0. (larger numbers are blurrier)

Ok, so step one. I tested this. The first time I nocipped to the area, I found three different AI trying to get through the left-hand door. All of them walked into the empty left-hand door as if there were monsterclip covering the entire thing. I ran a second test, and sat for twenty minutes watching AI come and go. All of them used the right-hand door without incident, until after twenty minutes the priest tried to exit through the left-hand door. He couldn't get through, and none of the AI that came after him attempted to open the right-hand door.

 

 

So clearly there is a problem. It could be that the AI always uses the right-hand door unless someone else is coming the other way, and that is rare enough that the problem just wasn't noticed in 2.05. But I'll test there to be sure.

 

Ok, step 2 was to see if the same problem happens in 2.05. It does not. I ran three tests under 2.05, the first two for half and hour, and the third for two hours. I could not get a single AI to get stuck in that doorway under 2.05. By comparison, I ran 4 tests in 2.06, and in 3 of them AI got stuck in a minute or less. In the 4th it took about 20 minutes. That is a significant difference.

 

So there clearly has been a change in 2.06 that has had an impact on pathfinding. Since no intentional change was made to pathfinding or door handling, Grayman (who has done more work on both than anyone) suspects it is probably caused by one of many physics changes made to accomodate uncapped FPS.

The precision changes were not made to accommodate uncapped FPS.

They were done to make it easier to allow save-games to work between x86 to x64.

I followed your instructions, and here's what I got in the log file:

Nothing suspicuous, unfortunately.

You can try to disable experimental settings (especially "multicore" and "uncap FPS") if you have them turned on.

If you have NVIDIA's "threaded optimizations" enabled, better turn them off.

You can also post darkmod.cfg.

Not cropped for me. Edit: much lower res than without AA though. 2.06.

 

But speaking of screenshots:

This produced a screenshot with no lightgem on 2.05, but on 2.06 it's still there.

There seems to be no crash at all when I load the game from the main menu, even if it's the same quicksave file.

You can try to disable rendering during quickload.

Run this command in console (given that F10 is not bound to something else):

bind "F10" "r_skipRender 1;loadgame quick;r_skipRender 0"

Now when you press F10, it will first disable rendering, then quickload, and finally enable rendering back.

Maybe it would help you.

 

The other option is to record a crash dump.

Either do it from process explorer or download procdump and run procdump.exe -i before starting TDM.

Currently I think that Uncap FPS brings better and smoother performance. Reducess choppiness in resource intensive scenes. It does feel like bringing things to slow motion, but at least less of that stuttering that happens without this setting at all.

Multicore Enhancement unfortunately doesn't seem to help. Unfortunately feels like adding more choppiness.

 

This is all in spite of ironically running a potato dual core Celeron laptop for the Multicore Enhancement setting. Needs more testing.

My screen seems to divide itself when I go underwater. The bottom left quarter updates, but the rest is static.

Well, that seems to do it! I've done that, used F10 a good dozen times without any problems, then crowned it by doing a regular F9 quickload to promptly crash the game as usual. Rendering during quickload seems to be the problem.

 

I see the binding was automatically saved in darkmod.cfg. I assume that I could just edit it to F9 (which is my preferred key) and delete the old line about F9, and it should work properly from now on, is that correct?

No. Though it won't work if you have r_skipDepthCapture "1" so to have Soft Particles you need both:

The current behavior is a workaround. MSAA doesn't work with FBO in 2.06.

The choice was to either to get complaints about "AA not working" vs "AA being slow" when Soft Shadows are enabled.

The latter is more expected from an end-user perspective.

How could artifacts of parallel wavy refractions on any surface (water, glass) with corresponding shader be resolved? (Uploading screenshot would come handy, yet I'm not familiar with the way how I could do that here.)
I have them with both 32 and 64 binaries and don't recall in 2.04. (Since which one had a hiatus.)
I looked through the testing thread and, it seems, disabling FBO should help (7-8 pages), yet command line output states forced FBO utilization on nvidia hardware.

Set r_nvidiaOverride 0 to allow you to disable FBO.

You will now have flickering noSelfShadows when you enable Soft Shadows.

Hello All,

I'm not getting a lot of joy out of 2.0.6...
Here are my system specs:

Dell XPS M1330
Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 @ 2.0 ghz
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
2 gig of RAM

I was using XP mainly for 2.0.5, and it ran without problem, as did the first testing releases of 2.0.6. This was on a XPS M1530, whch has since died, but the specs were the same apart from a larger screen.
I have now tried 2.0.6 on XP Pro (32bit): just get a black screen but hear the main menu music.
Tried it on linux (32 bit Void) and it does get to the menu. The included missions show but will not install. The game will not reload automatically. I am able to change settings though. It will not download missions list, even though network is working. I have tried some other distros (32 and 64 bit) but no improvement. 2.0.5 still runs ok on linux and XP on this laptop.

Hello All,

 

I'm not getting a lot of joy out of 2.0.6...

Here are my system specs:

 

Dell XPS M1330

Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 @ 2.0 ghz

NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

2 gig of RAM

 

I was using XP mainly for 2.0.5, and it ran without problem, as did the first testing releases of 2.0.6. This was on a XPS M1530, whch has since died, but the specs were the same apart from a larger screen.

I have now tried 2.0.6 on XP Pro (32bit): just get a black screen but hear the main menu music.

Tried it on linux (32 bit Void) and it does get to the menu. The included missions show but will not install. The game will not reload automatically. I am able to change settings though. It will not download missions list, even though network is working. I have tried some other distros (32 and 64 bit) but no improvement. 2.0.5 still runs ok on linux and XP on this laptop.

Darkmod.cfg as requested. I have fiddled with it a bit, trying various things I found on the forum. Also deleted it, and started without one, but nothing has made a difference.

OK. To start, why are you using darkmod.x86 on Linux when we now offer darkmod.x64 ?

To use the 32-bit build you would still need 32-bit libraries.

 

After the above, I believe that S3TC libraries are still "non-free" so you'd need to augment your free drivers with S3TC support.

 

Finally, set your resolution to match your screen:

Thanks for replying.

I was running darkmod.x86 on a 32bit OS (as I mentioned). Have tried the 64bit version on a 64bit OS and it is no different.

I do need to set the screen resolution when running full-screen else it locks up. The Darkmod.cfg must be an older one I reverted to after playing with settings. With the correct resolution the main menu displays (on linux, but not XP), but I cannot install a mission. It doesn't crash, it just won't let me start a mission.
