    2016+ CPU/GPU News

The 13900K is maybe a few % faster in gaming than the 7950X/7700X while using more power and hitting higher temperatures, so 7950X3D/7800X3D are going to have free reign until Meteor Lake arrives. 17:20 average gaming results (1080p) 17:42 average gaming results (1440p) 23:00 power/temps during gaming (Cyberpunk 2077)
  2. So, if I understand you, no Thief Gold FM does sound and text notifications of completed objectives? The missions in The Black Parade surely did. I'm completely confused now. I was sure that original Thief Gold had those objective complete notifications (at least the sound). Reading this thread suggests otherwise though: https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132977
  3. Greetings everyone! I recently got into TDM and am already having a lot of fun playing through and ghosting missions. However, coming from Thief, I am mostly relying on the rules and my experience with that game, while there are clearly differences in how TDM works. Right now, there is talk in the ghosting discussion thread on TTLG to amend the ruleset and include clarifications pertaining to TDM. So I wanted to drop by and ask: is there an active TDM ghosting community already and have any rules for this playstyle been developed? I would also like to ask someone to take a look at the draft of this addendum to see whether everything looks correct: https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148487&page=16&p=2473352&viewfull=1#post2473352 Thanks!
  4. A Problem Arises I've paused subtitling of the Lady02 vocal set, because of a problem with the voice clips described here: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/21741-subtitles-possibilities-beyond-211/&do=findComment&comment=490151 While a way forward is being determined, I'll work on a different vocal set. Maybe manbeast, for which Kingsal just provided me the voice script.
  5. Howdy all, It's time for me to do another hardware upgrade, and this time I'm looking to replace my old Dell Latitude E6410, which is getting a bit long in the tooth now. Considering how you TDM folks are responsible for the awesome gaming desktop I have now (thanks guys!), I thought I might ask for recommendations/advice here again. I'm looking for something that can run TDM, Darkradiant, and especially Unity (the engine I have to use for my graduate degree). Optionally Unreal, but I'm not sure I'll be using that or not. Being able to do some next-gen gaming could potentially be nice too, but I anticipate most of that will be done on my desktop. I'd also appreciate something I can install Windows 7 on without too much fuss, since I do have an extra copy ready to go, but I might bite the bullet and bear with 10 if I absolutely have to... A machine under 4 lbs would also be ideal, since I'll have to commute with the thing a lot. MSI looks like it makes halfway decent laptops, but I've also considered Asus ROG, and had someone at work recommend the Razorblade 14 2017, 1080p. I think I may want to stay away from Alienware, since they seem pretty overpriced. Top budget is probably $1500-ish, but cheaper would be better. Thoughts?
  6. I noticed the mixed response to the silent toggle change. I haven't had such a toggle on any of my Android phones. I don't want it silenced very often, and if I did I can spare the 2 seconds to look at the screen. I have noticed older folks will silence their phones on accident and then misplace them, wasting much more time. If someone is hiding in a closet and can't silence their phone fast enough and it alerts the nearby axe murderer, c'est la vie. While a physical interface was removed, technically another, different one was provided. I'm annoyed at buttons and ports being taken away in the pursuit of waterproofing, thinness, selling expensive accessories, etc. There were rumors of portless iPhones that have not come to pass (yet), and a real example of a portless laptop. People do take incremental performance and efficiency improvements for granted. There are not many areas of life where something would suddenly get 10.. 15... or 20% better, but that's what you tend to see with SoC improvements every 1-2 years, and they compound over time. Smartphone performance has reached a "good enough" level for many use cases, but additional silicon improvements can be used to extend battery life, and it looks like Apple is trying to make AAA gaming a thing on iPhone 15 Pro. Apple has always been stingy with RAM, while fanboys have insisted that iOS uses RAM more efficiently than Android. In reality, Apple may be slightly better at RAM management, but they are still cheaping out, and no amount of magic can stop you from running out if you open lots of large websites, apps, or whatever. On the Android side, there are gratuitous amounts of RAM thrown into phones for marketing purposes, especially in China which pushed some models up to 18 GB and now 24 GB, and there may be poor utilization of what there is. For example you get pages/apps reloading instead of using all of that extra RAM.
  7. Of course, it is one of the reasons for the decline of online forums, since the advent of mobile phones. Forums on a mobile are a pain in the ass, but on the other hand, for certain things there are no real alternatives to forums, social networks cannot be with their sequential threads, where it is almost impossible to retrieve answers to a question that is asked. has done days ago. For devs for internal communication, the only thing offered is a collaborative app, such as System D (not to be confused with systemd). FOSS, free and anonymous registration, access further members only by invitation, full encrypted and private. https://www.system-d.org
  8. oups wait a sec the 6th gen is newer than the sandy which is a 4th gen the 6800k in my main is also a 6th gen (or rather 7 since its a broadwell but intel uses the same gen for both the haswell and broadwell oddly). though one could argue that this also holds true with the CPU's from the sandybridge and ivy bridge age in which case the ivy would have been a gen 5 haswell 6 and broadwell 7. strangely while named similarily the 6700k is an 8th gen. in games the 6700k does better than the 6800k while the 6800k has a bit more pcie lanes 24 vs 16 and my xeon has 40. the difference in gaming is neglible though especially with newer games utilizing more cores. the 6800k was actually the cheapest 6 core at the time but in comparison with the older 3930k which was also a 6 core it only had 24 pcie lanes while the 3930k has 40 (intel cheaping out ?). to add insult to injury the 6850k has 40 pcie lanes while being pretty much equal to the 6800k otherwise so it does seem like they did. the 6950x which is the fastest CPU for x99 was pretty much unavaliable for us normal folks back when it was a thing (extremely expensive at 1500$) it had 10 cores and HT and ran at a higher clock than my xeon at stock 3.0 ghz vs 2.4 ghz it also had a higher turbo frequenzy of 4.0 ghz. sadly even today they are not cheap.

If you have a Prime account, on Prime Gaming right now Wolfenstein The New Order purchases into your GOG.com library, where it's listed as $19.99 but having Prime makes it free for the next week or so. https://gaming.amazon.com/home
  10. VA would be a great panel tech for dark games like The Dark Mod as well, if there wouldn't be the drawback of the slow pixel reaction times, especially in dark scenes (which leads to ugly smearing with moving objects). Unfortunately, it is not even guaranteed with more premium models, as far as I've always read. The only decent monitor in that regard that I've seen is the Samsung Odyssey G7. It's curved though, and that's another issue with VA monitors: They're mostly curved. Again, I think, for now, IPS is the best compromise, if you can get a panel with good contrast ratio, and happen to be lucky with a low amount of IPS glow in your specific model. I also think IPS is the most versatile, because, apart from being decent for gaming, it's also good for image or video editing, if you get one with good colour space coverage. For the future, OLED is surely the way to go, if they go for a cheaper price. That said, burn in still seems to be an issue with OLEDs. As @Xolvix wrote, all panel techs have their pros and cons.
  11. Black Parade is released ! https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152429
  12. well this turned into quite the project, the case had no problems with the 4790K heat wise so i bought an offhand asus rog gaming x99 board with a xeon 8 core 16 threads with HT and 64 gb ram and yanked that into it. the xeon is a haswell as well but a high end model with more cores and pcie lanes (40 to be exact) so i can now use my nvme without sacrificing half my lanes to the gpu so yay!, this also allowed me to use a slot for my thunderbolt card so im ready for some NAS action :) (or a whole slew of monitors 24 to be exact). cpu stays at a livid 35 degrees when idle and does not go much higher when i really start kicking in the doors, the gfx card does get a little hot but its an older model and rated for far higher than the 60 degree temps im seing so im not to worried. it runs quite well actually :), the lightshow on this board is kinda wasted though as the cabby has no glass panels but i dont really care about the flashiness anyway . Had some people go wtf when they saw how fast it was because they assumed it to be an old PC hehe.
  13. Body awareness please. https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/20013-are-you-gonna-add-this/
  14. I loved it. Awesome game. I faceplanted at the people who asked for quest markers in the Steam forums there... Herr, lass Hirn regnen. The game is so great, and so true to the original, because it doesn't hold your hand. When is the new breed of gamers gonna learn.
  15. I disagree with that. If you think about one of your earlier points that games become more like hollywood movies The gaming industry used to be controlled by "nerds" and people looking to realize their ideas that couldn't be realized in any other medium. Companies like Sony, WB etc. brought more and more hollywood people in The Same people who are responsible for what hollywood is now lord over the gaming industry. Listen to a guy like Druckman that guy is a hollywood producer through and through. The same culture the same people the same nepotism, infecting games. Regarding $, the margins if you adjust for the size of the gaming market today have become worse for games. They do exactly the same they do for movies for games now. Ignore, denigrate AA titles in the press, like they did with STYX 1 and 2. Hype up AAA titles that often aren't even functional at release. They use more money to promote and push their products than to make them. The whole gaming media solely subsist on funds from big publishers. All these new releases being only nice graphics but noting else, is not a consumer driven market development look how well some indie titles or AA titles do despite only getting negative press, while on the other hand AAA devs spending exorbitant amounts for marketing and some times don't manage to break even. TL;DR Hollywood people made the gaming industry worse.
  16. So giving it none of those tags, but making the AI invisible, silent, non-solid, and on a team neutral to everyone would not work? Oh well, it was a horrible inelegant idea anyway.
  17. dont see a problem with it either should be fine as nbohr1 said it does support opengl 4.6. intels built in gfx can be a bit finnicky at times though but i only had problems with a few select games using them. for my own part i ended up using the older pc components for gaming while my threadripper now chugs along building msys2 packages and other general development projects, gfx is a 970 gtx. The 1080 ti i paired with the asrock z97 extreme6 which runs really well when not overclocking, my old asus x79 deluxe is used as a second gaming computer for when my friends come to visit, and used as a media pc when im alone. I paired that one with my old msi R9 290X gfx card.
  18. Horror themed fan mission - exploration of seemingly deserted keep in the middle of swamps. Spiders, undead, darkness. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the story about the fate of my family. My uncle, Ralph Mac Roberts, is the baron of a keep nestled deep within the Rahenaen marshes. It was once an important outpost tasked with guarding one of the few Builder roads that cross the marsh, but after the Inventor`s Guild built a system of nearby dams that flooded the whole land, the road closed and there was no longer anything to watch over anymore. The keep itself needed reinforcement against the raising water level and the trade routes become almost impassable, not only for the carriages but for lone couriers as well. There hadn`t been any messages coming from the keep for over a year and my father was about to assemble a caravan so he could go on an expedition to the keep himself. However, in the middle of the night before he was set to leave, a carrier pigeon landed on his windowsill. My father received the letter and read the apologies from my uncle and his family, excusing their long absence. As a way to make reparations for their extended silence, my uncle invited me to the keep to stay there for a fortnight or so. My uncle had instructed me to leave my horse three leagues away from the keep by the nearest charcoal burning hut and hike the remainder of the road on foot, as the trek through the marsh is treacherous for horses. The weather will be awful this time of year, but my father insists that I should go anyways to ensure that our relatives are okay. These plains become dreadfully deserted - to the point where you more expect to meet the dead than the living. And by the way - I think I`m lost. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Download link: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aj1DVS465udZgVkXteBbr6cUxdPH Thanks: to the TDM team for great tools, and all the contributors for their assets, to betatesters: Amadeus, Bienie, Boiler's_hiss, Dragofer, Filizitas, Judith, nbohr1more, s.urfer, again to Amadeus for proofreading and text tweaks, and to all the players for their time! 19. Have you ever had dreams which were basically pure nightmare but you just kept on dreaming, fighting all monsters opposing you and actually enjoyed it? Do you experience dreams with complex plots that ultimately render you a superhero or stuff like that? If so, you might just be a gamer! I for one have very complex and colorful (sometimes even lucid) dreams and they quite frequently have gaming background. Recently the Aliens of Gears of War actually appeared in my dreams, although I hadn't played any Gears of War in years, and I also had the powers of Crysis. The next morning I woke up and thought to myself: "Wow, that was an awesome dream, but should I be worried that so many of my dreams are gaming related?" So I started search the web and on page 1 of google results were already numerous psychology publications about that matter. The following article describes PRECISELY what I am experiencing in my dreams and I am absolutely loving it. http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/21/5330636/video-games-effect-on-dreams That consensus of that article is that the effect of gaming on your dreams is actually a very good thing. They argue that nightmares are there for a reason. They are supposed to train you to react to horrible scenarious and while a regular person would wake up in shock, sweating, a gamer would carry on with his dream and try to find a solution, actually training his unconscious to react properly. I found that very interesting and since there were already some discussions about this here a few years back, I wanted to share this with you guys,
  20. Good lists you guys, and a good discussion. @chakkman a less pessimistic way of looking at things might be gaming as a whole has grown and democratized massively since the 90s, rather than the niche for our preferred kind of game is shrinking. The market for immersive sims and similarly complex experiences is actually bigger than it's ever been, but it's diversified into what's now viewed as a bunch of different genres within a massively expanded universe of gaming. A lot of survival games like Minecraft are arguably bastard offspring of immersive sims, as are many social deduction games in a different way, but there are plenty of more traditional offerings if you look for them. They just don't stand out anymore because there is so much competition for the public mind share, because we are less forgiving of flaws now that the market has grown and we can compare the present to the past through rose tinted glasses, and because we lack hindsight to appreciate the legacies the new games are building. Many kind-of-obscure modern games would have become absolute cultural touchstones if they'd been released in the late 90s like Thief. In fact to the kids of today and of the 2010s they may be exactly that.
  21. The thing about "gaming veterans" is that there are very few who can retain the same creative level and quality as they age. When you're young, you have passion and energy and a willingness to almost break yourself for the craft. But as you age you have more responsibilities, you become more exposed to dumb office/team/management politics, you become a parent, you get tired, become more cynical, etc. The vigor of youth gives way to the treachery of age. We even have a recent example. The Callisto Protocol had much of its media coverage and marketing focused on the fact that the game director (Glen Schofield) was one of the Dead Space co-creators. After its release, it more or less disappeared from talk entirely because the gameplay, horror elements and story were all unremarkable, bordering on mediocre. Games are made by teams and not one person and I'm not a fan of putting gaming veterans on a pedestal. Occasionally there's exceptions but they're also quite rare - Hideo Kojima earned his reputation with continued successes but most others have not. Anyway, that's a bit of a digression. The article was fun read but I have my doubts of another official Thief game, even if it is free from Eidos now.
  22. Public release v1.7.6 (with Dark Mod support) is out. Improvements since the final beta 14 are: Fixed a few remaining bugs with zip/pk4 support. Game Versions window now properly displays TDM version. Import window no longer has a vestigial off-screen TDM field (because TDM doesn't need or support importing). Web search option is now disabled if an unknown/unsupported FM is selected. If an FM with an unknown or unsupported game type is selected, the messages in the tab area now no longer refer to Thief 3 ("Mod management is not supported for Thief: Deadly Shadows"). The full changelog can be viewed at the release link. The de facto official AngelLoader thread is here: https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149706 Bug reports, feature requests etc. are usually posted there. I'll continue following this thread though. Thanks everyone and enjoy!
  23. Not so long ago I found what could make a pretty good profile picture and decided to try it out on these new forums. But I couldn't find a button anywhere that would let me change it. I asked on Discord and it seems Spooks also couldn't find anything anywhere. So I logged into an old alternative account and, lo and behold, that account has a button. This is on the first screen I get when I: 1) click on my account name in the top-right of the browser -> 2) click on 'profile'. Compared to my actual account: Are you also missing this button on your account? It'd be very much appreciated if that functionality could be restored to any of the affected accounts.
  24. Good work! I enjoy short missions because things are nice and focused - you get in, you get out. Also I tend to do better with the loot amounts and I was able to get all the loot without too much trouble, which is rare for me. If I were to make a suggestion though - I found the intro briefing sequence a bit distracting because it was so obvious the narration was pitch-shifted to make a deeper voice. If you felt the original voice wasn't deep enough for your needs, I would either get someone on the forums to record it for you or just leave as is. That's my only real complaint and it's not even about the mission itself, so pretty good first start!
  25. Actually, recently I was looking for a not too expensive laptop with not so bad gaming performance. Maybe I could get one of these handhelds instead and plug it in a portable screen, like the ASUS ZenScreen OLED MQ16AH for example. I guess you might need an external keyboard as well.. How good are the controls for regular use like browsing the web? What I don't like about the Asus ROG Ally compared to the Steamdeck is that it doesn't have trackpads. There's also this device with a 5.5" OLED screen: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ayaneo-air-1s-light-thin-oled-amd-7840u-handheld#/
