The original Mafia will be free on Steam from today until 5th of Semptember: https://kotaku.com/mafia-steam-free-original-limited-time-anniversary-1849481501 Looks like it's not available yet, but, will be in the course of the day.
  2. I think the reason the dev forums exist is to provide a place where the implementation of features can be discussed without getting mixed up with other debates when someone believes what the devs are doing is wrong. We often post public discussion threads for features with subjective elements like the frob outline, because community feedback is very important. But there will always be vocal defenders with strong views for or against certain features, or how exactly it should be implemented in their opinion. At some point a decision has to be made and be carried through, which is what the dev forums are for. Almost all of the threads are very technical, basically explaining and discussing recent or potential code changes with other devs. Its hard to say. Its a hobby the devs do in their spare time, so people come and go when they're in the mood and when they have the time. The team page is mostly accurate except for some relatively newer additions like myself.
  3. I just read@motorsep Discovered that you are able to create a brush, then select it and right click "create light". Now you have a light that ha the radius of the former brush. Just read it on discord and thought it may be of use for some people in the forums here too.
  4. sadly not gonna happen, your pc is no longer yours does not matter what dough you paid for it (atleast if it is running windows/OSX/android offshots). Could go linux but that means having to deal with some stuff we are no longer used to like having to configure certain things for stuff we rely on to work (games come to mind though it is miles better now than it was years back thanks to steam endorsing it). some BSD variants are pretty cool but require even more configuring if you can even get them to work on your uber hardware (the devil with BSD is that it was left behind when linux took off due to some nastiness around licensing rights which turned out to be hogwash but by then it was to late).
  5. TDM is no longer a "mod". Mods are (mostly) indemnified by Steam, particularly for Steam games because they generate revenue for the IP owner of the original game by way of promoting the purchase of said game to utilize the mod. Other "standalone" open source games on Steam would have had to agree to the contractual terms. The owner of those projects took on the liability of legal risks and if anyone takes legal actions the owner of those projects will be going to court on behalf of them. It is likely that such projects have studiously documented their assets and associated licenses so there is no wiggle room to sue them for infringements. Solution? Go back to being a Doom 3 mod and require a Doom 3 purchase so that (Microsoft owned) Zenimax promotes TDM rather than possibly being under threat from them? Anyone want to make a Dark Mod "Doom 3 mod" fork for Steam?
  6. Yes they can, but it doesn't solve the problem. The restriction isn't with our license¹, it's with the Steam legal requirements. The person who publishes the forked TDM on Steam would need to sign a legally-binding contract that says "I, <name> residing at <address>, am the legal entity responsible for the content of this game, and Valve or a third party can sue me if they suspect that the game contains some misused asset". Nobody in their right mind would sign such a contract to cover a project which they just forked, without first having their lawyers go through every single asset and line of source code to make sure it was 100% legit. ¹ Actually I don't know if there are problems with our license as well. It wouldn't surprise me if Steam simply won't allow any game with a "non-commercial only" CC license, since Steam is a commercial platform and the precise legal extent of such restrictions is unclear.

It looks like they mostly confine the good giveaways to a single part of the year, like December/January. Some of them are duplicates of older giveaways that were good. Just looking at purchase history, I notice Borderlands 3, BioShock Collection, and Wolfenstein: New Order around May. Epic Games going out of business would be perfectly acceptable to get some of the Tencent influence out of the industry. I wouldn't count on it happening anytime soon, even if the Store is unprofitable. But they have given dates ranging from 2023 to 2027 for profitability of EGS. A little economic downturn could disrupt everything, not just EGS. I imagine there would be enough time to download your game library and ensure the use of a hacked loader or something in advance of the company shutting down. There's a possibility that the game licenses (which presumably have been paid for, hence they are bleeding cash) will all be transferred to Steam and/or GOG. I broke down to "make" an account just to get giveaways and contribute to the decline, $0 spent. I don't play many games as is, but I was interested in grabbing the PC Building Simulator back in October 2021 just in case that could be useful. Actually, it looked like some Russian accidentally used one of my email addresses and created an inert account that had never been logged in before, so I was able to take it over easily by resetting the password. I wouldn't post EGS giveaways in this thread unless there is a really good one, since you know to just log in every single Thurs/Friday to grab whatever the latest one is like clockwork. Whereas Steam, GOG, and others don't have any kind of fixed schedule for giveaways AFAIK.
  9. Well I was wondering if you really need Steam to get the controller to work. Maybe there are other ways, including what is shown in the video. I personally have Splinter Cell on cd-rom (I just found out, bought it years ago), but I have a steam controller, so I would need Steam anyway and I'm using Linux. Great match.
  10. GREAT NEWS! Finally getting consistent results. So good that I've now installed Dark Mod again and began configuring it to play with the controller. This is effing great! So glad I persevered. I'll post a proper instruction eventually and probably a config for Dark Mod. You can run Dark Mod through Steam by adding it to your Steam library. There's no charge for joining Steam itself so it's worth it just to use 'any' game pad controller. Thanks for help!

I've found it difficult to find where TDM is listed as #1 on Greenlight. This page ( https://steamcommunity.com/greenlight/ ) has no ranked listing. This one ( https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=858048394 ) has no visible rank or stats page. Is it my script blocker?

  12. Thanks, yes, I did try that a couple of days ago without success. DS4Windows is supposed to enable any joypad on PC, but when run it said .NET needs to be installed. So I installed it. It stills kept saying .NET needs to be installed. I checked and .NET is correctly installed. But DS4W still won't run, it just says .NET needs to be installed! I keep fiddling with Steam's gamepad config but still no luck. But I have found the steam general discussion forum finally. Initially, I clicked community but then no sign of a general steam discussion forum, only games. Several days later I discovered you need to hover over the word 'Community' not click it, then you get a drop down.
  13. What I would want from a new Thief game: Appropriate the Darks Souls (and Metroid Prime etc) free-roaming world design formula. I.e. make the entire game a single interconnected environment, with many diversely themed areas that densely link up to each other in interesting ways. This should not be a stretch for Thief because its already the gold standard for how we design individual mansion and city missions. (It doesn't need to be gigantic though. Think how awesome Iris was.) A new city with new cultural inspirations. This is one reason I think Dishonored feels like a worthy spiritual successor despite dropping the ball somewhat on gameplay. An Arabian knights tinged Bagdad/Cairo like setting would be interesting to skulk in, or a city with shades of 19th century Hong Kong/Shanghai. A new main character who is not a Garrett reboot. If anything our new MC should be a thematic foil to good old Garrett: someone in a similar situation but for different reasons, with a different outlook and character arc. Thief 2X did this well. For instance I would be fine with the MC being a young acolyte of a new Keeper order started by Garrett after Thief 3, but don't have him/her leave to become a thief out of hubristic pride. Have them turn thief out of desperation, post some disaster or failure. Make it something they are distressed over, then over time grow to appreciate the monomythic import of being "The Thief" in the Thief-verse. New factions for a new story and MC. While Hammers, Pagans, Keepers, town guards, and crime lords, were cool and thematic for Garrett's story. Our MC should have their own friends and foes. Maybe the city ruling families are a bunch of ancient mage clans. Some are austere isolationists with ties to organized crime, others internationally minded reformers who are embracing the City's steam punk tech. Maybe instead of pagans the new city has a cults of ancestor worshiping necromancers. Maybe the new Keepers are a dysfunctional confederation of ego driven lunatics and schemers, suffering from the neglect of an absentee leader who only seems to care about balance. It's still a detective story at heart. All the good Thief games are about slowly and sometimes incidentally figuring out who is the big bad and how your sneaky skills can stop them. That should not change. Maybe incorporate some light immersive survival elements, perhaps in the mold of Pathologic, but probably less oppressive. E.g. have the MC need to steal so s/he actually has money to buy food and pay rent on someplace to sleep during the day. Otherwise hit them with penalties. I would be fine with MC getting some supernatural movement tech like the Thief 4 Swoop or Dishonored Blink, but it should be late game only (unless the player sequence breaks, which would be a super cool option).

Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock 100% off on Steam until April 9th 1PM ET https://store.steampowered.com/app/544610/Battlestar_Galactica_Deadlock/
  15. I just found this thread on ttlg listing Immersive Sims: https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=151176
  16. It wouldn't make sense as a reason anyway: if somebody wants to steal TDM and upload it to Steam as their own game, they could do so right now using our open-source code and assets. Putting TDM itself on Steam does not increase the risk of that happening; in fact it arguably decreases it because Steam would already know about TDM and be less likely to accept a fake version of it uploaded by someone else.

  18. With the headline, I almost thought this was a real announcement, especially since it also comes from Gold. But when I read it, I quickly realized what he meant. He also didn't dare to make it seem real for an April 1st joke, because then too many would have believed it...like that you can now convert everything quickly thanks to chatgpt and therefore you don't migrate to UE 4, no, you migrate to UE 5, and chatgpt then also uploads the game immediately on Steam, because chatgpt, so the highest courts in Europe and the USA have decided, is a legal entity and is allowed to do that!
  19. Aaand I pushed that magic button on a Steam Greenlight :)

  20. TDM is now in the top #30 on Steam Greenlight.
