The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

Hi guys, since there is no Skyrim thread in the forum, I'm hereby starting one. I was highly motivated by

which can also be downloaded here. Usually I'm not (anymore) one to fall for a hype, especially since Oblivion was such a bunch of FAIL, but the music in the Skyrim trailer and the news tidbits about the new game make me hope that the hype will be warranted.

Have fun! ;)

I remember for the last one I purchased it when it was relatively new for the Xbox 360 at a whopping 80 dollars. Way more than the usual price of a game but SO worth it. I'm really looking forward to this one, the environments sound way more dynamic and detailed than in the previous version which will allow for hundreds of hours of great gameplay :)

I was kinda hoping the Summerset Isles would be the setting because the way I heard it described among TES forumers it would include a variety of different climates including tropics. One thing that Morrowind got right that seemed less spectacular in Oblivion was the visually distinct look and feel of the regions. You had temperate zones, swamps, volcanic, grazelands, coastlines, and later snow in Bloodmoon. Oblivion did cover a lot of those same types of regions (volcanic being Oblivion gates) but it just didn't have as much of an impact for me.

So the 5th game, Skyrim is about the Nords, which were already covered in Morrowind: Bloodmoon. But on the plus side, you have freaking dragons and supposedly revolutionary graphics and hopefully fun to boot. Then TTLG's main page includes blurbs and opinions on the game and I hear rumors about lackluster early screenshots and more consolification. So overall I'm not going to put a lot of anticipation onto Skyrim and just wait for release week to see what people have to say. Another issue is that the last two Bethesda games I've gotten, Oblivion and Fallout 3, have been buggy releases. Oblivion was OK relatively soon, especially after the first patch, but Fallout 3 was unplayable for me. Maybe I should have had better hardware but I feel like that's a copout. I should be able to play the game at some extremely low graphical settings and not have to worry about crashes.

Edit: Hadn't seen this new non-teaser trailer. Hey I wonder if Levitate is back seeing as there are freaking dragons?!

Heh. Funny to mention this. I dug up oblivion from my collection and started it just last monday. Good game, although I hated the dynamic scaling difficulty: at level 1 you encounter a highwayman wearing longjohns, at higher level you meet the same guy in glass armor.

Luckily the community improved this. I got all the unofficial patches, oblivion overhaul and few other mods. Now this game rules! Sometimes I even need to run away, thing seldom needed in modern rpgs.

I might get skyrim if it is good.. but nowadays the game price is not the biggest issue. It's about not having the time to play games..

There are very few games that I save pennies for by drinking less beer, but Skyrim definitely qualifies. TES III/IV are among the best story-driven class-customizable rpg games imaginable. And I'm all about story/atmosphere. The stealth system may have sucked in both, but they weren't stealth games. there may have been crashes, but I don't even care. I may have corrupted a few savegames and lost 25 hours of gameplay, and played them all over again. DONT CARE. It was totally worth it, and I'd make the same choices every time, and if there's another installment thats 3/4 as good, with half the modding community, i'm shelling out for it, puriod(.)

How was Oblivion a fail, for me it was one the best games of all time

For me, Morrowind was one of the best games of all time, and Oblivion was THE disappointment. You see, as native English speakers you didn't have to bother with the uber-crappy German translation, which was done inhouse at Bethesda and was criticized throughout the German speaking community.

In comparison, the translation for Morrowind was done by a translation agency (which I worked for), and quality was praised. I still have the game magazine articles cut out somewhere.

Naturally, when the translation sucks, the game itself is no real joy. Add the dumbed-down game mechanics (like the arrow on the map that points you *exactly* to the location you need to go to, so you can't *possibly* miss the target). The leveling-up of enemy AI was already mentioned. Did I mention the overloaded in-game menu?

Also, the characters were downright ugly. Other contemporary games made their NPCs look way less ugly. Skyrim seems to be a huge step forward in that regard, from what can be seen in screenshots.

If you guys played Oblivion on a console (which it was made for, in fact it seems that the PC version was more of an afterthought) you might have had a lot of fun. For a German PC gamer it was not.

(Funny translation bug: In the last mission of the Thief quest, the speaker (Nightingale or whatever he was called) delivers his line, then there's a short pause, and then the voice actor asks into the background "War das okay so?" (Was that okay?). This MUST NOT HAPPEN!)

Oh, and yes, what I really loved is the fact that there were 5 voice actors in all, 3 guys and two women! This is beyond ridiculous!!!

I really really hope for the best. While MW was in many regards too difficult (in fact I have never played the main quest, partly because at first I didn't find the guy I was supposed to meet at the start), Oblivion was too "consoly". I do hope they'll get the mix right this time and make a game that offers the best of both worlds.

I'm looking forward to this but I don't think it will be much of an RPG anymore. It seems like this time, they streamlined character attributes (strength, endurance etc.) away. I could be wrong but I wouldn't be surprised about it.

But if it's more a combat simulator it might still be a good game.

I'm certainly going to buy this and Mass Effect 3 of course which will be released in the fall as well :D.

@ 7upman: It might be time to start installing your games in English. Your English writing is perfect, so why bother with a lame German version? I wouldn't even want to play a game in my native language, it just sounds wrong.

Edit:

@ biker: Isn't this the same trailer 7upman linked? :D

I don't think I finished either Morrowind (I know I didn't) or Oblivion (was it "finishable"?), but I do recall liking Morrowind at the time as the best of those kind of games I'd tried... And Oblivion was great, especially the story/stories. It's a shame they fucked up the translations. No excuse at all for that. None. This is the 21st century.

Ah yes, I completely agree with you. Im playing nehrim atm and its not that enjoyable because all the actors are speaking in english. In fact I might email them do some line for them to see if I can replace some of the generic characters.

You could finish the main quest of closing all the Oblivion gates etc and complete all the main guild quests: thief, fighter, etc. but AFAIK it could then be played indefinitely accumulating loot etc.

I think it's going to be awesome. Can't know for sure obviously, but you've gotta look to the past TES games to kinda gauge how this is going to go down.

Every TES game since Daggerfall (Can't speak for Arena, since I never actually played it) has had major things changing for the next game, and this always pisses people off. Like I remember people got their panties in a bunch when they heard that Morrowind's whopping 2000+ characters (or what it was, don't really remember) was downscaled a bunch for Oblivion which had like half or something.

And people also got pissed off because of some changes made in areas of the gameplay, which I just think are improvements, and don't forget the sudden drop of certain items, such as spears from Morrowind that doesn't exist in Oblivion.

So my point is, when you read that they have changed stuff from Oblivion you immediately think: "Oh no. It's dumbed down! IT'S DUMBED DOOOWN!!! FML!!!"

And this reaction isn't going to change, but think of them as a way for Bethesda to actually Develop the game further, not to willfully make it worse.

Now if it was strictly for console gameplay, I'd be a little more alarmed at the outcome and damage done to the gameplay to accommodate the "console tards" (:P).

In short, I think it's going to be just fine.

Sure, it will have its pros and its cons just like every TES game, but real fans accept that and have fun with it... *I think*

I do, and I'm a fan and I deal with it.

Also they might've messed up Fallout3 just slightly and pissed off a lot of Fallout players with the decisions made, but in hindsight Fallout3 was kinda a good game, not the same as Fallout1 and 2, but still a decent game.

Point is, they have ABSOLUTELY no real chance of screwing up a TES game, it's their sole IP. They can't make it bad really. It's original no matter what they do with it.

Change isn't the enemy.

Actually, did is what I did (later), I bought the English version of OB. Only, now I don't have the time anymore to adjust the game to modern standards (by installing texture packs, Natural Environments etc.). Oblivion is sitting on my shelf right next to games I will play someday, like Tron 2.0, Dark Messiah of M&M, Impossible Creatures etc. Some day someone will create the ultimate Oblivion pack with all the mods out there and no incompatibilities between them (as it is now). Then I'll play it again.

Actually, I got around this very quickly, because I was kinda pissed off that MW had a skill for everything. In that regard I considered OB a step forward.

Exactly. I was just pointing out that it was one of the things that caught people's attention and sorta made their initial thoughts of Oblivion sour hearing all sorts of rumors and stuff about how things were changed to be of a smaller quantity than in the previous games.

In fact, if you look back at all the games, they have all been improvements from each game. Just as it should be with games and game-sequels.

So I can almost be bold enough to say that Skyrim's going to be good. Just like that. It's of course presumptuous to claim that, for obvious reasons, but to judge from the steps from each TES game to the other, it's going to be good. :)

Just sayin'...

I actually did finish morrowind, but had to cheat, didn't use the inbuilt god mode, used the editor to create a ring that had a constant health heal and migicka heal, else it would have been impossible to finish, the last thing you have to kill hits you for 50 percent of your current hitpoints every 5 seconds, everything was maxed out, so you couldn't dodge the hits the machine made. Still took about an hour to kill it. After I finished went and killed the god vivic who was suprisingly easy to kill compared to the thing you have to kill to complete the main quest line.

the main quest line in oblivion is a doddle compaired to morrowinds main quest line, although the main quest line in elder scrolls 2: daggerfall, is as confusing as hell, due to a key AI giving the wrong information at the right time.

the ruins in skyrim are dwemer maybe there be more information on the great journey the dwemer went on when they left the world.

I just hope its not linear like gothic 4 was compaired to gothic 3 which was an open world.
