  1. Based on Rebb's work to make the Ambient light run it's own light interaction rather than piggy-back on the main light interaction, I have made a patch that allows you to add the "cubicLight" token to light material defs and switch lighting from the standard shaders to a new cubic_light.vfp shader that uses a cubemap as the projection texture and falloff is done spherically. This "new" shader (2011) was designed by Sikkpin before doom3world.org met it's demise. It also has HL2 ambient style cubemap shading which takes an input cubemap and gives the environment a sort of radiosity approximation based on the values in the input. The main goals of this beta are: 1) Evaluate the functionality (look for bugs) 2) Evaluate the usefulness of each feature 3) Determine whether the current shader is sufficient or if it needs to be modified 4) Create new Light materials and textures to prepare for this feature The shader doesn't have the same features that TDM's main interaction includes (Rim lighting, Fresnel, etc) and instead appears to have been tailored to make the light look as much light HL2 as possible. This means if you use this light type exclusively, your mission wont look like a normal TDM mission. Over the course of the beta, I intend to attempt to fix that but I'm no ARB shader expert so no promises. (If Rebb, SteveL, Revelator, Obsttorte, or JC Denton... etc wish to chime-in I will gladly accept any assistance). In the absence of any help on the shader front, I still believe that this shader could prove useful paired with our normal lighting as it would add more realistic light projections from Desk Lamps or could be used as an alternate outdoor ambient. Place the glprogs folder in your darkmod install folder. Place the zzz_ambientcube.pk4 in your darkmod install folder. (This includes materials and cubemap images) Place the maps folder in your darkmod install directory. (This includes a converted version of Sikkpin's demo map without Doom 3 AI) Open the console and invoke: map ambientcube.map You will see the initial area, illuminated by cubemap projected lights. There is some sort of artifact there. I think it might be z-fighting or brush corruption but I couldn't fix it by snapping to grid so this is one of the first things to examine. If you noclip straight up into the sky above this area, you will see the other demo areas with HL2 style lighting. I have found that spawning AI on the platform in these areas produces strange shadowing. I suspect that the geometry of these zones is messing with the shadow calculation so I would like to hear whether the same problem manifests in a map built for TDM. Good luck! (Spooks this is it! )
  2. Recently revisiting the forums after a longer period of time I wanted to check the unread content. I don't know if I am doing this wrong since.. ever... but on mobile (visiting the unread content page on my smartphone) you have to click on that tiny speech bubble to go to the most recent post in a thread. If you don't click correctly you'll hit the headline and end up at post 1 in the beginning of the thread. It's terrible on mobile, since not only the speech bubble is really small and was to miss. But also the thread headline is just millimeters away from it so you go right to the first post that was ever made instead of the most recent ones. Am I doing it wrong? I just want to go through u read content a d the to the newest post from that topic.

Ars Technica revealed that, even with all of the Win10 security settings on Off, Win10 still sends some data to the Micro$oft Mothership. I tested on release and wasn't impressed. I found if I enabled (fairly modest) whitelist outbound blocking on my internet router, Win10's internet responsiveness would fall through the floor. All browsers would takes ages to resolve sites and the OS itself would actually become lumpy/laggy. Forced updates Not being able to control what gets installed on "MY PC", is a massive NO! NO! Patching remains Windows 10’s Achilles’ heel, all Windows 10 Home machines, and Windows 10 Pro machines that aren’t hiding behind an update server (such as WSUS or WUB) will get all patches applied according to Microsoft’s time scale. All three of the first Cumulative Update patches have had problems with reboot cycles. KB3081424 on Aug. 5, KB3081436 on Aug. 12, and KB3081438 on Aug. 14 all crashed a bunch of Windows 10 systems. The installer stops mid-installation, flashes an error message, rolls back, and reboots. Then you guessed it -- the forced installer kicks in and crashes Windows again. Rinse, lather, repeat. Getting out of the mess involves editing the registry. We haven’t yet seen how Micro$oft will recover from a really bad update, the experience to date with the three Cumulative Updates does not instil confidence. We don’t know if Microsoft will start documenting its patches again. We don’t know if much effort will be directed at fixing and improving the Microsoft-supplied Universal apps. Windows 10 installer takes a look at your system and based on the hardware and software it finds, assigns your request to a bucket of similar upgrade requests. The guys running the upgrade system, prioritize your request based on their assessment of how likely your system is to bomb out on an upgrade. Key apps, such as Mail and Edge, STILL aren’t ready yet Some of Windows 10’s key apps simply half baked. Mail has a nasty habit of putting notifications in the upper-left corner and leaving them hanging forever. There’s no combined Inbox, so if you have multiple accounts you have to jump from Inbox to Inbox. And it crashes hard -- for a lot of people. Edge, the new browser, similarly has all sorts of rough "edges". There are no extensions yet, thus no AdBlocker. Changing the search engine is tortuous, moving tabs onto the desktop and back again doesn’t work and you can’t pin tabs. In short use what ever mail/browser you wrere using on previous OS. Not much in the way of Universal apps Don't believe the marketing bollox about all of those wonderful Universal apps in Windows 10, whether it’s on a desktop, notebook, phone, Raspberry Pi, it ain't happening. The Windows Store is still by and large a wasteland, with crap apps galore. Win10’s Tablet Mode broken First, there’s the menu on the left that tucks away the entries on the left side of the Start menu. It collapses fine, but when it’s collapsed it rarely shows any more tiles than when it’s not collapsed. What’s the point, eh? Universal app windows have that pesky taskbar permanently tacked on the bottom, while the window bar at the top auto-hides. Edge, when running full screen, doesn’t support any of the old Metro IE swipe commands. You can’t swipe through running apps. The apps themselves? The irony is M$ Office on the iPad is better than M$ Office on Windows 10. OneDrive regression This concern applies only if you use OneDrive in Windows 8.1, and if you put a lot of stuff in OneDrive. For those of you using OneDrive in Windows 7 (and Windows 8), there’s no change in behavior with Win10. But if you’re accustomed to seeing all of your OneDrive files in Windows 8.1’s File Explorer, you’ll be in for a bit of a shock. Windows 10 makes you choose which OneDrive folders you want to be able to see in File Explorer. Once you’ve made that choice, the other folders aren’t accessible in File Explorer. The only way to see what files you have in OneDrive is by venturing to the OneDrive website. Missing Media Center and DVD player For those people that run Windows Media Center, its gone in Windows 10 PC. Instead Micro$oft wants you to use/buy an Xbox. Ain’t broke, don’t fix it The old adage comes from experience and it’s as applicable now as it ever was. If you’re using Windows 7/8/8.1, and it’s properly patched up and working for you, and you’ve stopped using Internet Explorer, you really have to consider whether it’s worth the effort to upgrade to Windows 10. Carefully consider whether the warning signs listed here. Still to many questions For example, when you upgrade a “genuine” Win7, Win8 or Win8.1 machine to Win10 and run the upgrade in place, Micro$oft records a hardware ID that says, “this machine has valid license” At that point, you can install either Win7 or Win10 on that machine, and your license will be validated. Its believed that the only version of Win10 that you can disable ALL telemetry and fully control Windows update in, is the enterprise version. Smells like Teen Spirit desperation Microsoft Marketing chief Chris Capossela explained that users who choose Windows 7 do so “at your own risk, at your own peril.” It is particularly myopic to rubbish one of your own products that way. Put simply Capossela is a complete cock, Windows 7 is no less secure than Windows 10 (it will be supported until 2020 and Windows 8.1 2023) and is no less compatible with new hardware and software. Also at the moment Win7 has a bigger market share, so easier work for developers. I'm getting this while trying to package for Debian: CMake Error at cmake_install.cmake:554 (file): file INSTALL cannot find "/build/darkradiant-3.4.0/obj-x86_64-linux-gnu/install/bitmaps/darkradiant_icon_64x64.png": No such file or directory.   7. I can recreate this problem on DM 2.11. It doesn't happen on 2.10, so something changed in the core that surfaced this issue. Whether it's a bug in DM or a bug in my mission, I don't know (I would assume the later). It's going to take a while to track this down, especially as I'm going to be out of town for the next few days. I'll work on trying to isolate the problem when I get back. If you can't wait, one option is to play the game with DM 2.10. You can install it separately from 2.11, and use it just for this mission.

      I've found it difficult to find where TDM is listed as #1 on Greenlight. This page ( https://steamcommunity.com/greenlight/ ) has no ranked listing. This one ( https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=858048394 ) has no visible rank or stats page. Is it my script blocker?

  10. Netflix in browser has capped resolution. If you want full resolution you need to install a desktop application. Here it says that the only browser to support 4K playback is Microsoft Edge. It's to prevent easy screen grabbing.
  11. Thanks. Now, allow yourself to get hit by the blue (or orange) elemental, so you are transported, and send me that log. Actually, you could store out a save file and let me try to debug it on my machine. Go to <darkmod install>/fms/byanyothername/savegames and send me the <savename>.* files. Pick the save just before you get into the elemental section. That might be a more efficient way of debugging this. (You are using Version 2 of this mission, correct?)

  13. I think it is a good idea! Our ingame mission downloader and mission view has long been subject of multiple improvement suggestions. Due to the sheer mass of missions that have been released in the last 15 years, things got really cluttered and especially newcomers will have a hard time finding what they want. However, improving the ingame guis is quite a task, so a web-based application might really suit this scenario well. Maybe we could even add a linke to it from our ingame menus, so user can access it quicker. Some more things to think about Would users be able to add custom tags and downvote / upvote certain tags, much like the system of Steam? This would also allow to add tags like "beautiful", or "difficult". Actually, the more users can contribute to this system, the better, because it will be automatically maintained then. The browser should also contain a flag for whether the FM belongs to a connected series of FMs or not and have the capability to go to the previous or next FM in that series. There should also be a flag for fully fledges campaigns. Some might like a flag whether or not an FM is "ghostable".

Which makes it interesting that you yourself explicitly said that it's interesting nobody had complained here on the official forums: I did, which is why it stood out to me so much that even though you yourself had personally been involved you would reply claiming nobody had complained here on the official forums. I'm not colorblind at all. Does that make people pointing out that almost no modern games have proper colorblindness support hyperbole? Just because it doesn't affect you, or you choose not to pay attention to the discussion of something, doesn't make it hyperbole. Pick pretty much any modern FPS and you will find plenty of discussion about the near universal disregard for FOV and camera movement as accessibility issues. Denigrating those as hyperbole because you personally don't feel the affects is as bad of a look as demeaning people who bring up the importance of valid allergen warnings like gluten or colorblindness and deafness support.
  16. I just copied this information out of the .desktop file. It wouldn't hurt to clean some of those up though, the longer description was also there but might be a bit brief for a graphical package browser too. Not DarkRadiant specific, but I think you usually just have to install the Flatpak version of your system theme. For me (KDE / Breeze), I had to install https://github.com/flathub/org.gtk.Gtk3theme.Breeze and apply the workaround from the readme.

I confirm the same behaviour that @DavyJones is reporting: starting from a fresh install of the mission and not doing anything like moving the mouse or pressing a key, results in an immediate crash. If I move around upon start, most of the time (but not always) the mission continues normally. Once this happens, there are no crashes upon subsequent restarts or reloads. In addition to the above logs, I have generated a strace -F trace file of the crash, in case somebody (e.g. @nbohr1more ) could get some useful information from it. It is around ~15MB (gzipped), any suggestions on how to send it?

Ignoring is somewhat inadequate as you still see other members engaging in a discussion with the problematic user, and as Wellingtoncrab says such discussions displace all other content within that channel. Moderation is also imperfect as being unpleasant to engage with is not in itself banworthy, so there is nothing more to do if such people return to their old behaviour after a moderator had a talk with them, except live with it or move away. I'd be more willing to deal with it if it felt like there were more on-topic discussion, i.e. thoughts about recently played fan missions or mappers showcasing their progress, rather than a stream of consciousness about a meta topic that may or not have to do with TDM. I guess the forums already serve the desired purpose, or they just compartmentalise discussions better.

  20. Flatpak has a default install location though, why would it even be necessary to give it access to the non-default location at all? To my understanding, leaving the install paths where they are is part of the point with flatpak: it isn't meant to be tampered with or moved by users. That said, running the binaries directly by encouraging the old execution process (./example-executable or double-clicking) isn't how we want users to do this anyway because it could bypass the flatpak sandbox. I think the solution here would be to just include a .desktop file with the game, but do correct me if I'm misunderstanding something Lol
