  1. It is a nice concept.... but then AI got equipped with fancier, cooler flints and the player is left with zero chances to upgrade. Was the idea to make players feel miserable or unworthy? I don't think so, but that's how I felt. Leave no trace. Lighting candles and oil flames back up once an area is clear is part of my job, and let me tell ya: IT IS FUN!
  2. Keep in mind also that mission size, and complexity have increased dramatically since the beginning. For a lot of veteran mappers, it can take over a year to get a map made and released. The last dozen missions have for the most part been pretty massive, with new textures, sounds, scripts, models etc. We seem to be long past the point of people loading up the tools, and banging out a mission in a few weeks that's very barebones. We still do see some of those, but I noticed in the beta mapper forums and on Discord, that mappers seem to make these maps, but don't release them, and instead use the knowledge gained to make something even better. Could just be bias on my part scrolling through the forums and discord server though.
  3. I'm building my PCs for almost four decades now, and there was only one occurance, where I "only" upgraded the CPU. Since I only upgrade when I can really feel the difference, the old machinery is by then pretty much obsolete anyway...
  4. No it isn't bad at all, yeah I use ssd for running software, I only have a 4tb hd for mostly media files. but I'm noticing some situations where I want my pc to be a bit faster (including gaming) and thought since I upgraded these parts 10 years ago it would be a logical time to start looking for an upgrade.
  5. So a Ryzen 3 3200 is about 20% faster than that CPU. Anything reasonably inexpensive in the Ryzen 3xxx to 5xxx series would still be an upgrade for you.
  6. Supposedly AM5 is going to support at least 3 cpu generations so if you are switching from Intel to AMD then that is probably the wiser move unless your Intel CPU is so old that a Zen 2 chip can beat it. If you do have a weaker Intel CPU and don’t mind waiting a long time then get an AM4 motherboard and a cheap Zen 1 or Zen 2 generation CPU then wait for the price of X3D AM4 CPUs to drop in a year or two. Basically just pretend it’s a few years ago and treat X3D as your final upgrade path. What Intel CPU do you currently run?
  7. OK I think I've got to the bottom of this. I've created this forum thread (with bug report): https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22221-bug-drowning-ai-in-shallow-water/ I can apply a workaround, although it won't be perfect and the bug itself needs fixing in the engine. There are a few other things that need fixing so will put an update together soonish.
  8. If any mappers have encountered weirdness with kill objectives not working with drowning AI, I think I've found out why. I don't think it would be a particularly difficult one to fix either. I've raised this bug report: https://bugs.thedarkmod.com/view.php?id=6323 Some context here: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/21837-fan-mission-the-lieutenant-2-high-expectations-by-frost_salamander-20230424/&do=findComment&comment=487316 I think this is a bug, but just raising here in case some people think otherwise.

I suppose making a campaign as an individual and building for Thief Gold go hand & hand. You need to be pretty obsessed to do either. XD

I'm just very happy to see how much work still goes on with the original Thief games. Good mods = long life after release!

What? The mysterious saviour is back to make our Thief lives happier again after such a long absence? I can't believe it's true! Wow thanks so much!

  10. started playing the division2 with a friend, still trying to figure out best gear upgrade paths, there is quite a lot to consider... especially now since i just unlocked the hunters xD and they are all over my ass.
  11. I'm wondering if anyone ever checks new posts in the Fan Missions Forums? I've posted 4 questions asking for help for 4 different missions that I can't finish because I"m stuck, and I don't get any help. I posted a question this morning so I don't expect an answer right away for that one. Its frustrating because I would like to finish them. I've read through the posts for each mission and I'm not getting anything from them. If there's someone who could help me I'd really appreciate it. Thanks I guess I'm spoiled from the TTLG forums.
  12. TTLG? That's Through the Looking Glass Forums. A looking glass fan community. Has been around for a long, long time. https://www.ttlg.com/forums/

  14. Hello TDM-ers. I am encountering an issue where textures seem to partially disappear. I tried searching the forums, but, I don't know what to search for. The missing textures are a worldspawn brush acting as a roof with {for now} flat iron texture. There are other worldspawn brushes right below to create an attic ceiling with roof framework board texture. These gaps appeared a few edits ago. I can't "undo" to get back before whatever edit did this. The gaps are only visible during play and are not visible during editing. Closing and reopening DR and TDM do not fix anything. Some of the brushes overlap in areas behind the play area but I have never seen an issue doing that. The attached image has the effect I am now seeing. Ideas on where to start debugging this? Very much appreciated. Clint
  15. Hi all, me again Now that I've learned how to take screenies on DM (thanks to Aluminumhaste) I wanted to post one that I took but I got an error saying that the image ext that I used was not allowed in these forums, It was .jpg so I changed it to .png and I got the same error again. They're on Photobucket.
  16. I think the reason the dev forums exist is to provide a place where the implementation of features can be discussed without getting mixed up with other debates when someone believes what the devs are doing is wrong. We often post public discussion threads for features with subjective elements like the frob outline, because community feedback is very important. But there will always be vocal defenders with strong views for or against certain features, or how exactly it should be implemented in their opinion. At some point a decision has to be made and be carried through, which is what the dev forums are for. Almost all of the threads are very technical, basically explaining and discussing recent or potential code changes with other devs. Its hard to say. Its a hobby the devs do in their spare time, so people come and go when they're in the mood and when they have the time. The team page is mostly accurate except for some relatively newer additions like myself.
  17. (I apologize for the odd poll question layout. I wasn't able to add five yes-no questions, because polls are limited to three questions.) Hi everyone, I've recently been working on some patches for issues that I've read about from players on the TDM and TTLG forums — and Discord. My goal is to make it as easy as possible for players, especially new players and those who need usability/accessibility options, to find what they need in order to have a better TDM experience. I've already written the GUI and game engine code for these settings, which I've been using in my personal build. The reason for this poll and discussion is to both guide the finalization of my work and collect data to help inform the dev team. Which patches I submit depend on the outcome of this poll, discussion, and what the dev team agrees to accept. Once decided, I can coordinate with the dev team. I've attached screenshots of what the new settings menu would look like if all of the settings are accepted. Below, I have detailed each menu setting, so you can have an easier time understanding each one. Very important to keep in mind: None of these settings change TDM default behavior. They are all opt-in. If you are already happy with the behavior of 2.10, 2.11, etc. and these menu settings are accepted, nothing will change for you. Rename "Always Run" to "Run Mode" with options "None, Always, Toggle" After 2.11 was released, @i30817 requested that "toggle run" be added to the settings menu. Its cvar is already in TDM as "in_toggleRun" (same as Doom 3). I propose renaming the "Always Run" setting to "Run Mode" with options: "None", "Always", and "Toggle". None = in_alwaysRun 0; in_toggleRun 0 Always = in_alwaysRun 1; in_toggleRun 0 Toggle = in_alwaysRun 0; in_toggleRun 1 Show Blackjack Helper @Wellingtoncrab suggested that the new blackjack helper be added to the settings menu. Its cvar was added to 2.11 as "tdm_blackjack_indicate". More info: It's the new blackjack helper added to 2.11. When the game detects that the blackjack can be used for a successful hit or KO, the blackjack will rise slightly. I propose a "Yes/No" setting for this. Slider for "View: Head Bob" @ChronA requested a way to disable head bobbing, because a viewer watching him play was having severe motion sickness. Also, there was a bug in TDM that made setting the head bob in the console not stick after loading a saved game. (Even with 2.11, if a mission overrides the "tdm_player_thief.def" file and sets "pm_bobroll", "pm_bobpitch", "pm_bobup", and other cvars, it will override player preferences.) As far back as 2008, players have had trouble setting head bob. Another one from 2018. At the end of 2022, @Shadowex3 registered just to voice the need for a way to control head bob. I propose that a slider be added to adjust the amount of head bob. This would use a new "pm_headbob_mod" cvar with a value between 0.0 and 1.0 (default 1.0, no change). The "pm_headbob_mod" would be a multiplier for "pm_bobroll", "pm_bobpitch", and "pm_bobup". The advantage to this approach is that missions like Volta 2 and Hazard Pay would not need to adjust their "tdm_player_thief.def" files for head bob to work properly. And, the player can still adjust "pm_bobroll", "pm_bobpitch", and "pm_bobup" as they like. Slider for "View: Mantle Roll" This is similar to head bob for those who are sensitive to motion. Its cvar was added to 2.11 as "pm_mantle_roll_mod". A Thief player on Discord said, "2.11 will have a cvar to tune down the mantling animation at last." I propose that a slider be added for "pm_mantle_roll_mod". Auto-Search Bodies @Zaratul requested the "auto-search bodies" feature from Thief 1 & 2. Its cvar was added to 2.12 dev16783-10307 as "tdm_autosearch_bodies". I did a poll on the a Thief Discord server and roughly 20% of players there use the Thief auto-search bodies feature. I propose a menu setting for this, so that players coming from Thief 1 & 2 can easily find it.
  18. I'm quite willing to play! I'll be grateful for you help in investigating. I've played most TDM missions. My hardware is pretty old, but I'm not planning to upgrade until the current component availability crisis has passed: I'd like to upgrade to a high end AMD GPU, think am going to have to wait another year for that given the current supply chain for everything electronics these days. My hardware and software stack is, as posted over here: The key points are: 1/ a 10 year old Radeon HD 6950 card (with 2GB RAM); 2/ 16GB system RAM; 3/ up to date Fedora installation (now Fedora 33); 4/ 1920x1200 display. Since the 2.09 beta test and upgrade I've been basing my configuration on the following settings (which I apply after deleting Darkmod.cfg): seta tdm_door_auto_open_on_unlock "0" seta tdm_mainmenu_confirmquit "0" seta tdm_wideScreenMode "4" seta r_fullscreen "2" seta r_aspectRatio "2" seta r_customHeight "1200" seta r_customWidth "1920" seta r_fboColorBits "32" seta s_useEAXReverb "0" seta com_showFPS "1" seta r_usePersistentMapping "0" After that I can play with the advanced graphics settings. I'd like to turn on anti-ailiasing, but it tanks my FPS. The only other option that seems to make a visible difference for me is soft shadows, so I do like to turn those up, and normally it has no impact on FPS.
  19. Awesome! Post is up! https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22200-beta-testing-the-house-of-delisle/#comment-487365 Thanks!
  20. Not sure what the license is but if the Nvidia Remix tool has textures with a creative commons license then someone could extract them and use the texture replace tool in Dark Radiant to update a mission with them. The textures are most likely using a modern PBR format with metalness and roughness, so without PBR support in TDM they would need to be converted to a diffuse \ specular design ( I believe there are tools that automate going from legacy to PBR but I am not sure whether any texture author tool can do the reverse? ) There is a long term plan to evaluate whether allowing mixed legacy and PBR content the way that the "RBDoom3BFG" Doom 3 port does might be viable in TDM. If it turns out to be viable, then TDM would be able to use these "remix" textures natively without conversion ( again, as long as they are open CC assets and can be exported ). As far as I can tell, Nvidia are locking down all remix aspects so that modders can only use it for Nvidia's intended purpose of upgrading old fixed-function games to RTX. They aren't interested in shader based games or DX9+ because the change to Ray Tracing won't be as dramatic. Anything using light-mapping with probes is going to get a negligible upgrade from changing the lighting model since lightmaps are already raytraced. They want really impressive before \ after pictures to sell the technology. Even TDM probably looks too good in the "before" state to be of interest to Nvidia. ( That said, I would gladly accept a ray tracing patch for TDM if Nvidia ever decided to create one for us... )
  21. https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2021/08/31/windows-11-available-on-october-5/ It seems like a mostly incremental upgrade to Windows 10 along with some newer tech like Auto HDR and DirectStorage that wouldn't help me much since I play mostly older games on an older monitor. That said, it's a free upgrade and the plan is to start offering it via Windows Update to eligible machines in mid 2022, so you don't need to worry about waking up one day to find Windows 11 suddenly running after an unexpected update. Maybe worry about it in 2025 once Windows 10 reaches EOL. Anyway, just a news update for anyone who cares. I'm still not sure what to think of Windows 11 so far, based on what I've seen/heard. I use a start menu replacement in Windows 10 anyway so any limitations arising from missed/changed functionality should hopefully not be too bothersome, but we'll see. I have a TPM on my motherboard but it's currently disabled in the BIOS, so it seems like I can probably prevent Windows 11's installation entirely if I want until I'm ready. Then again I might end up moving eventually to Linux, who knows. I've been threatening to do that since Vista, but it's never happened for longer than a week.
  22. No. The Aeden's staff optional objective is the hardest of the game. To point out directions here, though, is getting into an area of heavy-duty spoilers ... so I'm constrained in my response just as I was constrained in my responses to the "endless keyhunt" complaints because to show the rather simple direction would be a huge spoiler. So I had to bite my tongue and take it. Aeden's staff is different, though - harder. I've never tried a no-KO ghost playthrough. Because I'm clumsy and have slow reflexes. I think it might be possible to do a stealth no-alerts playthrough. Are you allowed to KO? I think I've gotten the staff a few times in my playthroughs without alerting the builders in that room. The only switchable lights in the FM are table lamps. The cylindrical style wall lamps aren't extinguishable. The other fire and gas wall lamps are extinguished by water. In the Ox all waiters and commoners in the common room and outside are friendlies - except for the waitress in the upper lounge which is filled with enemies. You need water arrows. Moss arrows. Rope arrows. I've never used a gas arrow in a playthrough of the FM but one would make things easier, for sure. I'm going to replay the area and check through the locations that you mentioned - the loop etc. - then if it's OK with you I'll PM you with some info, tho' I'll ask you if you want the info first. So's not to spoil it for others who get that far in the game (few and far between!). I find it almost impossible not to click the "reveal spoiler" tags and read the info ... and, y'know, spoilers do spoil the real deal.
