  2. Is there something wrong with the forums lately, or is it my browser? I've been having trouble formatting posts, and just now I couldn't format anything at all.

    I'm using Vivaldi.

    Usually I have to: select text, click bold, nothing happens, select again, click bold, then it works. 

    Same for other stuff, like creating spoilers, bullet points, links. Nothing works the first time.

      I have no problem. I use Firefox. @Zerg Rush also uses Vivaldi. Have you tried without extensions, or in another browser?

      (btw. bold, italic and underline have shortcut keys: Ctrl B, Ctrl I and Ctrl U, you could try that)

       

  3. I'm surprised I could find any thread here for chat-GPT. Version 4 is outstanding from all reports I saw and I can't wait to get my hands on. It's not just a chat-bot (though it can discuss anything with you in great depth.) It can grasp the MEANING of sentences and write its own. In future games, you'll be able to talk to NPC's like you would any human. Search for video: Unbelievable AI Breakthrough Interactive AI Characters in a Videogame for the First Time! This demo is outstanding. GPT will be WRITING games! It can write meaningful stories. It can fill in your tax form, prepare your business/wedding speech and discuss its merits with you, and organise your professional work rapidly It can understand humour It can teach! Efficently! Sensibly! Find the Khan Academy video. It can write code/script good enough to frighten a senior programmer who can see it already is as good as junior coders and some seniors. He's afraid because it is certain to take over HIS job in due time, possibly only months away. An AI bomb has been dropped with GPT-4 and many do not yet realise how life-changing it will be - greater even than the advent of the internet. I give it 5 years to change the efficiency of almost everything tenfold, a hundredfold.

  5. Bachelor Mapping Challenge!

    The girlfriend will be away to her mum's place for almost a week, which means more mapping time for me! I'm planning a speed build. Hope it will go my way :)

    I'm starting by downloading 2.11. Don't know if I'm going to use any fancy new stuff. Just want to crack those itching map muscles that has gone dry and dead since almost a year's worth of no-mapping :)

  6. Since Aluminum directed me here ( https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/9082-newbie-darkradiant-questions/page/437/#comment-475263 ) can we have unlimited renderer effects? Well, maybe not unlimited, by maybe 3-5? Thanks.

      There already is a kind of sorting, sort nearest, sort decal, sort <n>. For things like windows and such, sort nearest should probably have the desirable affect, though looking through multiple translucent shaders might kill performance.

      Is having multiple render effects really killing performance that badly? I don't understand. You're saying that if I have two transparent objects side-by-side, then they'll just count as two render effects, but when combined, they somehow become something much more difficult to render?

      Never-the-less, unless we're talking some kind of infinite portal problem, why not let the mapper choose how much he wants to kill performance? Just warn him against putting too many effects close together.

      Yeah and the wiki and moddb. It should have those links in the footer I think. Probably easy to add by an admin.

      Edit: And a link to the bugtracker. I'm always searching for a post in the forum that links to that because I can't remember the url.

  9. Not so long ago I found what could make a pretty good profile picture and decided to try it out on these new forums. But I couldn't find a button anywhere that would let me change it. I asked on Discord and it seems Spooks also couldn't find anything anywhere. So I logged into an old alternative account and, lo and behold, that account has a button. This is on the first screen I get when I: 1) click on my account name in the top-right of the browser -> 2) click on 'profile'. Compared to my actual account: Are you also missing this button on your account? It'd be very much appreciated if that functionality could be restored to any of the affected accounts.

      Yes it was in a discussion where someone was saying how unhappy they are with the way game companies grant themselves permission to do whatever they like to your PC and personal info today. I pointed out that giving up games completely is an unnecessarily overkill solution when there are free games like TDM to play.

  12. Hi guys, through the "cheats" topic I got the idea, that it would be quite useful, if there were tags for missions (the post was about removing the killing restriction in some missions to suit the prefered play style). I don't know how easy or difficult this is, but with them, it would be quite convenient to pick missions with playstyles, environment, etc one does want to use. This could also be expanded to other mission properties. I remember a discussion about climbable drains, handles on doors, that cannot be picked and other things the map author chooses for himself. That way these things would be clearer and as I said before, it is easier to choose missions with playstyles that suit oneself. What do think?
  13. As Tdm missions have become more complex and larger the load times have continued to increase. This would be alright if they were reasonable to begin with. Playing Crucible of Omens running off a Samsung 850 evo ssd I get about 1 minute of loading time. My best uneducated guess is too many assets are loaded at mission start rather than dynamically loading them in over time? My other thought is this engine may not be suitable for dynamically loading assets and by extension large in game areas? I suppose it was originally running Doom 3, a corridor style shooter from what I've seen. Just speculation but it definitely negatively impacts the experience for me. Most of my games load up missions within 10-20 seconds. Seems like the only way to enjoy Dark mod will be to fire up the ram disk.

  17. First of all, hello! I am a new player and user, who sadly only heard of TDM a few days ago. I was mind blown that a game of this genre + quality + complexity might exist in the world of open-source / Linux gaming, and couldn't believe my eyes until I actually played it and looked for official info on the website. Thank you to those who created this fantastic and ambitious project, and of course ID Software for releasing the Quake 4 engine which made it all possible. As far as I'm aware, this is the only FOSS singleplayer FPS, as well as the only FOSS project with cutting edge rendering features which actually allow for modern visuals... certainly something new in this area. There are many things I'm intrigued to discuss and possibly suggest. I wanted to start with a simple technical question however: Is it known when there will be an x64 version of the engine? 32-bit is always slower more or less, as well as limited to 4GB of memory... main reasons why I strive to run only 64-bit versions of everything. It's also problematic to run on a 64-bit Linux OS, where you usually need compatibility libraries to be maintained. I use openSUSE which thankfully maintains these... but I still have an issue with sound constantly "flickering" and suffering rhythmic interruptions, which is suspected to be related to 32bit. I discussed this briefly on the IRC channel, but only heard that attempts to make the engine x64 compatible existed yet none were finalized. Was hoping there might be more news on what to expect.
