  1. The devs didn't title this thread, and @datiswous said they're attempting to mislead people by using Russell's name and a retro style to make it resemble Thief, which is cynical. I grew up on forums like I'm sure anyone who likes a game from '98 did. I actually left the Discord immediately after joining it because it was more off-topic doom-posting than anything relevant to the mod. I thought the forums might be better, but it's mostly just grown men yelling at clouds and telling strangers how mature they are, and a few brave souls actually developing anything. Depressing place, I'll just stick to enjoying new missions every 6 months without an account.
  2. True, but, 1. this thread is called "Western stealth FPS with Stephen Russell", and, 2. nothing you said changes anything for me. The gameplay still doesn't look like something I'd enjoy. And, if you really think this forum is cynical, then you don't visit forums much. Actually, the majority of the users are are pretty mature, unlike in other forums.
  3. We get along and players win. Thanks again! Both the Electric Mine and the Shock Mine look more or less the same in-game but the difference in the approach is considerable. I first wanted to do without the Gas stim and use the KO stim instead: To avoid the cough To avoid extinguishing nearby candles and fires Stims are great for things that may or many not happen but when things must happen stims are unreliable and we end up using stims wrongly, creating more issues as we go. The KO stim didn't work: It doesn't hurt the player KOs don't get credited to the player So I scrapped everything and started from zero. A script now takes care of the most relevant events with no room for unintended side effects or failure. It is not a general mine problem, this is how the game is designed and it our problem. If you mean: can I fix it with a few edits? The answer is I have no clue. You must use my version. I took advantage of both built-in "defs" and scripted events. Shock Mines first damage AI: If AI is still alive then AI fall unconscious (KO) If AI is low on health AI dies and so will you!
  4. Updated patch along with new test builds. Windows: https://drive.google.com/file/d/13lQig7Yzfc_jovU2zZklxLV1QOKAjkXe/view?usp=sharing Linux/Ubuntu: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1j7DoWBKuBAFdVH2Y-2LcYsgdtJNBabmn/view?usp=sharing @stgatilov Could you please update test-frob-daftmugi? Changes in update: Bodies can be dragged instantly by holding frob and moving the mouse. Food can be eaten the same way as extinguishing a candle. (Pending) Add menu setting "Hold Frob to Use", with options: Quick (200ms) - short delay before use Delayed (400ms) - long delay before use TDM original Current design: Frob Pick up body and shoulder it (carry it) / Drop body Pick up candle/lantern and carry it / Drop candle/lantern Pick up food and carry it / Drop food Pick up an item and carry it / Drop item Hold frob (for special action) Drag body or body limbs Pinch out candle (also, pinch out candle while carrying it) Toggle lantern off/on (also, toggle lantern while carrying it) Eat food (also, eat food while carrying it) Hold frob and move mouse to instantly drag body. Addressed concerns from initial design to current design: Changed the candle behavior to pick up on frob and extinguish on held frob. Added @AluminumHaste's suggestion to allow un-shouldering a body on frob. Added @nbohr1more's suggestion to allow extinguishing a candle while holding it. Added @Skaruts's suggestion to allow instant dragging of bodies on mouse move. Tried to address @snatcher's suggestion of making the extinguish candle delay 500ms instead of 200ms. There's a planned menu setting to set it to "Quick" (200ms) or "Delayed" (400ms). Also, I hope the "instant" body dragging will work well for you. I think this is finally in a good place. It's evolved quite a lot since its initial design. I've tried to address as many concerns and suggestions as I could. Thank you everyone who gave feedback! It's much appreciated!
  5. It's hard. I see what you are thinking about is a "bullet point" pattern, with or without a bullet point character. For that case, I suppose what we are trying to detect is: - the line starts with the bullet point pattern - a "J" character (say) with a shortened spacing, is somewhere in the line. - the line itself in the xd file is long enough to force a word wrap (let's just think about a single wrapping here) - the author assumed a particular word wrap point, and put in extra spaces in mid-line, immediately at the wrap point, so as to indent the latter part of the line, aligning with the indent of the first part. - the shortened-spacing J screws up the resulting alignment. Probably would need a script/program to winnow this down... ideally, that algorithm could also restrict attention to just Stone font. I'm OK with putting such an effort off for now, maybe revisiting it for 2.13.
  6. Uff... hard-coded "magic numbers" like this always make me uneasy.
  7. With TDM 2.12, after the credits finished, the "Mission Complete" screen did not display. I found that the screen was black and I could hear my footsteps when I tried to move around. I think the reason for the mission not completing successfully was that the "Do not kill or harm allies" objective was never marked as "1 = STATE_COMPLETE" instead it was left as "0 = STATE_INCOMPLETE". Note, I didn't use noclip throughout the mission. Same as: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/18054-fan-mission-the-accountant-2-new-in-town-by-goldwell-20160509/&do=findComment&comment=458491
  8. How about using TDM automation framework (and maybe pcem/qemu)? More info see: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/19828-automation-features-and-discussion/
  9. Beta 11 Fix finished-on state auto-update was unreliable Slighty improve scanner title/author detect Tags are now named some whatever regular-version-looking thing to force GitHub to put the newest at the top
  10. Perhaps id didn't cared for that loss on accuracy, at lest for Doom 3, is hard for me to believe they did that for lack of knowledge or something but who knows. Is this code still in BFG?
  11. Indeed: there are already accuracy issues as soon as you use floats (especially single precision), and a hard-coded snap-to-integer behaviour seems to be reducing accuracy still further. That's actually a rare example of "App Hungarian notation" where the prefixes convey meaningful application-specific information, rather than just duplicating basic types like integer or float. It has been suggested that this was what HN was originally supposed to be, but everybody used it just to show primitive types which resulted in the whole convention becoming disliked. Exactly, and it breaks down completely once you start using more complex types than primitive numbers. Knowing that something is a pointer is useless without knowing what it points to, knowing that something is an "obj" or a "struct" is similarly unhelpful, and once you start trying to expand the convention so that the prefixes can convey information about the actual object type, you will end up with complex multi-character encoded prefixes that nobody else will be able to understand.
  12. @grodenglaive I think random head turning might be plausible for specific characters, if they're supposed to be paranoid for some reason. But you should let the player know in advance that they're always looking over their shoulders. I don't know if Elsevier has any reasons to be paranoid, but it could be plausible in his case. It could even be one of the reasons why Astrid had a hard time seeing him insert the safe code. The doors thing, at least some interior doors were auto-closing too. I was specifically thinking of the dinning room doors when I wrote that. I think there were more auto-closing interior doors, though. Personally, my potato doesn't have any real issues with performance in this mission. Only on the outside the frame rates drop below 60 sometimes, but never enough to make any noticeable difference to the gameplay. That said, I wonder if you could use double visportals on the outside doors. That might help, as the inner portal should close more often, without needing to close the doors. I use double portals sometimes because of that. But it needs testing to know for sure whether it helps or not. (It also requires adjusting info_locationSeparators, as they can only touch one portal). Also, the big visportal in the water that separates the front yard from the spider area seems to be always open. I wonder if having two visportals in a V shape (from the top view) instead of that one, would help closing it. Or some similar configuration that doesn't interfere with the view from the watchtower.

  14. Mandrasola is a small sized map in which aspiring thief Thomas Porter steals some herbal products from a smuggler. The mission was created by me, Sotha and I wish to thank Bikerdude, BrokenArts and Ocn for playtesting and voice acting. Thanks goes naturally to everyone contributing and making TDM possible. This mission occurs chronologically before the Knighton's Manor, making it the first mission in the Thomas Porter series. Events in chronological order are: Mandrasola, The Knighton's Manor, The Beleaguered Fence, The Glenham Tower and The Transaction. The winter came early and suddenly this year. Weeks of strong blizzards and extremely harsh cold weather hit Bridgeport hard. With the seas completely frozen, a rare occurence indeed, most of the City harbor commerce has stopped completely. Vessels are stuck in the ice and no ship can leave or enter the City, resulting in the availability imported goods declining and their prices skyrocketing. One of these imported items is Mandrasola, a rare herbal product, which is imported overseas from the far southern continents. Mandrasola has its uses in alchemical cures and poisons, but mostly this substance is used for its narcotic qualities by commoners and even the nobility. The problem with Mandrasola is that excessive use is extremely addicting and the withdrawal effects are most grievious. Many are utterly incapable of stopping using Mandrasola and are transformed into quivering human ruins if they do no get their daily dose. And now this expensive and rare substance is running out from the whole City. Me and my fence, Lark Butternose, would love to grab this monopoly to ourselves: selling the last few doses in the City would probably be worth a fortune. According to Lark's sources, there remains only one smuggling lord who still has Mandrasola in stock. The problem is that this individual maintains an exclusive clandestine operation and only supplies a few nobles. Despite our best information gathering efforts we couldn't learn who the smuggler is and where he or she operates. Luckily we have an alternate plan. While searching for Mandrasola related information, we learned that a noblewoman called Lady Ludmilla is addicted to the substance and has paid high prices for small amounts of it. We also know that she has visited frequently someone in the Tanner's Ward waterfront, and since she goes to the area personally we believe she is visiting the smuggler. The plan is simple: I must monitor Ludmilla's most likely entryway to the Waterfront and then follow her to the smugglers hideout. I'd better be very careful around Ludmilla. She must not realise I'm following her or she probably won't lead me to her dealer. Hurting her is also out of the question. After she leads me to the smuggler's hideout, I can take my time to break in carefully and steal all the Mandrasola I can find. While I'm there it wouldn't be a bad idea to grab some loose valuables as well. I've now waited in the blistering cold for a few hours already. Looks like there are a few city watch patrols in the area to complicate matters... I think I heard a womans voice beyond the north gate. That must be lady Ludmilla, I haven't seen many ladies in these parts. I'd better get ready.. Links: Use the ingame downloader to get it. WARNING! Someone always fails to use spoiler tags. I do not recommend reading any further until you've played the mission.
  15. What are you talking about? Edit: Ah I see: It's not really important I think if you use the already excisting TDM installation (but starting TDM with the Linux executable) from the Windows drive. If you install TDM (from Linux) on the persistent storage space, it might be slow. But maybe it's not really so bad.
  16. Surrounded by greedy noblemen and treacherous siblings, Lady Kamila Leicester gets more than she bargains for after acquiring an ancient tome and performing the dark rituals within. Bikerdude, Wellingtoncrab, Dragofer, and I proudly present Grayman’s FM “Seeking Lady Leicester.” Notes - TDM 2.11 or later is REQUIRED to play this mission. You can get the latest TDM version via the installer or here. - Seeking Lady Leicester was originally a work-in-progress given to the Dark Mod community per Grayman’s wishes after his passing and was initially adopted by Bikerdude before Dragofer, Amadeus, and Wellingtoncrab joined to complete the FM. -This FM does NOT support any unofficial gameplay patch or mod. The use of such a patch and/or mod could break things in this FM. You've been warned. - "Story" subtitles are available for this FM. Simply go to Settings --> Audio and select "Story" or "On" for the subtitles setting. - This FM may be more hardware intensive than normal. LOD settings can be set below "Normal" to improve performance on low-end machines by disabling certain features. - This FM implements the func_peek mechanic, allowing players to peek through any door that has a keyhole on it by leaning forward. PLEASE NOTE: This function has been known to cause crashes for a small number of players in the past, likely due to using the 32-bit version of TDM. At no point in this mission is it required to use the func_peek mechanic; it is purely optional, so feel free not to use it. Download Version 1.1 This FM is available for download via the in-game mission downloader, or here via Google Drive. Promotional Screenshots ThiefGuild Thread Credits A big thanks goes out to Noelker and Goldchocobo for their wonderful voice work with the briefing and conversations, JackFarmer and itsPapiD for their fantastic briefing video, and nbohr1more for his story contributions and writing one particular gameplay feature that I won’t spoil here but you can read about in the readme.txt. An even bigger thank you goes out to our beta testers: nbhor1more, Daft Mugi, Silverwolf, Havoc, Datiswous, Cambridge Spy, Aluminumhaste, Thebigh, Ate0ate, Acolyte6, Kalavi, JoeBarnin. Thank you all very much for your fantastic feedback and tireless efforts as this FM evolved throughout the course of development! 17. I don't think there's a link to thedarkmod.com on forums.thedarkmod.com ...

    1. datiswous

      datiswous

Yeah and the wiki and moddb. It should have those links in the footer I think. Probably easy to add by an admin.

Edit: And a link to the bugtracker. I'm always searching for a post in the forum that links to that because I can't remember the url.

I drew attention to this several times in the last few years. No one payed it any attention, so I just gave up.

Reluctance to improve the forums is matched by reluctance to allow more people to work on it. Talk about trust and power.

  18. If the "mission fails as soon as stealth score turns non-zero," that would not be good for ghost players. They might need to find out "how" they failed and experiment to avoid alerting guards. They might need to take those score points as a "bust". They might need to take those score points to complete an objective. Then, mission authors would need to encode exceptions into their missions, which would be a lot of work (if they decide to do it at all). However, part of what makes ghosting challenging and fun is when mission authors do not create their missions with ghosting in mind. Please see: Official Ghosting Rules: https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148523 Writing code for these rules would be a huge undertaking. Ghost Rules Discussion: https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148487 Creating an official mode could alienate these dedicated ghost players, because it would clash with what is considered ghosting in the community. Including the Stealth Stat Tool mod in the official release would be more useful. Or, making the audible alert states of guards quick and easy to recognize could help as well. For these reasons, I don't agree with an official "Ghost" mode. If the dev team were to do it, we should consult with @Klatremus so we get it 100% correct or not pursue it at all. (This ghosting bit should probably be in its own thread.)
  19. new version 1.4 The main fix in this is the issue discussed above along with some other minor fixes. 20. Sometimes I just want to come here and say stuff like "hah, how about those biscotti biscuits, eh? Tried for the first time and my mind was blown into a million tiny biscobits. They're pretty good! also, I'm a dad now. anyway, bye" But I feel a new topic would be too strong, and I'm not yet sold on the Discord. I was an avid IRC user in the past (where I met my current wife, btw) but even so discord still doesn't work for me, I don't know. So yeah, I am a dad now! that is actually a thing. He looks like me and is very tiny and I love him. Also, the easiest personality to raise a child I've ever seen! this is baby easy mode, for sure. He barely screams and cries and just generally makes my life happier. The day before he was born I was super insecure and afraid. Would I love him? would I raise him well? as soon as I held him I knew that if anything happened to him I would murder an entire football team with my bare hands and then kill myself. As grim as that sounds this is actually a good thing. Also, a good use for this topic is for all of us to dump our TDM-unrelated game dev projects! I decided to make a game for the SEGA Mega Drive (Genesis for the Americans). It's a grid platformer akin to Flashback, prince of persia, blackthorne and others. I reject the term "cinematic platformer"; I think it's silly. But, brushing aside nostalgia, the only things I like about those games is the animation, obviously, and the grid snapping. There is potential for strategic gameplay in grid-based games and I think those games I mentioned should have focused less on precision platforming and more on semi puzzle gameplay. So I'm making it a stealth game! I don't think Mega Drive has any of those yet. Having some fun with debug logs: I have currently 4 game dev projects, which I cycle through periodically, but this is my main obsession right now.
  21. They are there for a reason though, not just because someone said so. If you want to communicate with people and you work on the code with someone, you need to share some common principles. And while I agree that things like clean code can be a bit extreme at times, I've never seen anyone questioning it super hard; neither stuff like solid principles, for example. Obviously, you can be a rebel if you want to, but you'll probably end up working alone.
  22. To cater to both audiences. I mentioned LibreGameWiki as one example. nbohr1more mentioned other uses. Explicitly allowing reuse and spread will help TDM reach a wider audience and would hopefully attract more volunteers. More volunteers which can help improve both TDM versions. There are several benefits for a project of being in the Debian repo. One is that TDM Debian-users can report defects on any package directly to Debian (no need to register on separate forums). Debian may then fix the issue themselves (in their "TDM-libre" package) and will offer the patch upstream to TDM, who can then choose to accept or reject the patch. I envision "TDM-libre" to have the same capability of downloading any mission as regular TDM. The only difference is that "TDM-libre" would come packaged with the regular engine (which is GPL+BSD) and an included mission that has libre media/gamedata. When I play TDM by myself, I want the unlimited-play and can accept commercial restrictions. But if I were to promote it somewhere, or charge for a stream when playing online, or make a video, I would want a version without commercial restrictions (and can temporarily accept limited-play) to make sure I don't violate anyone's copyright. Perhaps. That's what I'm trying to find out.
  23. I suggest you use the term "I", to make clear that it is something YOU want, and that you speak for yourself. But, as wesp5 mentioned, I don't really know what this is about, at all. And, I'm also wondering about all the newly registered people lately, who just arrived at this forum, and already want to revolutionize this mod. This is a thing I noticed 2 or 3 years ago, and which hasn't been present in the 15 years I play this mod and frequent these forums now. Really seems like a common thing these days, to not knock on the door, but kick it in, and stomp right in.
  24. As I don't know what else to do to help debug this, I went through the process of verifying if the issue can be reproduced in a VM. Took me over an hour due to some problems on my end, in the end I managed to confirm that it can! I've laid out the exact steps needed for anyone (including Windows users) to reproduce this: Install VirtualBox, get the Manjaro KDE / Plasma iso from https://manjaro.org/download In VBox create a new VM of Type: Linux, Version: Other Linux (64-bit). Under its Settings - Storage add the iso as optical drive with the option "Live CD/DVD", also add a virtual hard drive to install to. Booting up the VM should start a live Manjaro session. It will provide a prompt to start the installer; Do so using the default settings, choose any username and password but don't enable automatic login. Restart once it's finished and boot from the virtual drive instead of the iso (F12), the VM should now load into the installation. The SDDM login manager should present you with the login screen after booting. Before typing your password look in the bottom-left corner: You have options for Plasma X11 and Plasma Wayland, click it and select the later. After changing the session type use the password you chose in the installer and log in. Open a console (Konsole). Clone DarkRadiant with "git clone https://github.com/codereader/DarkRadiant.git". After that follow the instructions at https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=DarkRadiant_-_Compiling_in_Linux to install Manjaro dependencies with the "pacman" command followed by "cmake .;make --jobs=4;sudo make install". This takes a while so remember to give your VM a few CPU cores then use them in the jobs argument. Open up the DarkRadiant binary, you should find it in /usr/local/bin. Skip past any questions and warnings regarding the DarkMod data, you don't need TDM for this test, note that may crash it at first. As DR shows up right-click in the 2D or 3D view to take control: You should be seeing my issue as the views go all over the place. I'm sorry for the messy setup again... can understand if the team doesn't have time to bother with it, but still hope you can find a moment to try it out. The good news is once this setup is in place, you should be able to push changes to the VM and recompile (only part of the code changes) to test the result immediately. I'm happily ready to run any tests myself and confirm any solution found! Let me know if I can help with any more information.
  25. What you can do is: Download Manjaro Linux XFCE edition. (XFCE edition has best performance) Put it on usb-stick (usb 3.0 minimum, otherwise too slow). You can use Rufus for this. Boot from it, using the Proprietary drivers option in boot menu. Inside Manjaro linux, go to your Windows drive to the folder with your tdm installation. Start thedarkmod.x64 (NOT TheDarkModx64.exe) I tested this and it loads pretty fast.
