Just found the prefbas folder last night. Hadn't copied it over from SVN, doesn't seem to dl with tdm update, maybe I removed it when cleaning up, but I ran tdm_update after the cleanup...

Id that something we need to start including so mappers have access to all that good stuff?

My objectives are gonna be quite simple anyway so it's cool to learn it from scratch.

So...

Any idea how many people (or teams) are taking part in this? I keep seeing folks I've not heard of otherwise speaking about their missions :)

Or is that maybe part of the fun, having many surprises?

I made a rough count and posted this somewhere in answer at ttlg but can't find that post now. As I recall it was a fuzzy 16 but expect around a conservative 10 FMs

A fuzzy 16... I like the sound of that...

A conservative 10... I do not like the sound of that.

But, wait, I suppose we aren't talking sex and politics; so I'll stop being silly and say that in this context those are good numbers (~double the previous contest?)!

I see another one, Jesps', is nearing Arrival. Release, Release... (Yes Yes) (Tormato Tormato)

I'll rephrase that to roughly perhaps maybe around about 10 plus 6 fuzzy so it's clearer. ;)

Before the contest I was hoping for a minimum 3 or 4 entrants so would be delighted if we get 6 or 8 completed FMs. Anything above that is cream. Of course, anyone who starts but doesn't finish in time for the contest hopefully will finish in the months ahead so that's still good.

It's a fuzzy world.

Sometimes there is nothing like a bit of speedbuilding. As long as you are focused and have time, anything is possible in 3 weeks. :)

Yep. Proof:

The Glenham Tower was created in 20 days.

The Beleaguered Fence was created in 26 days.

For me, focused bursts of obsessive mapping is the only way I suppose.

And Prowler in the Dark was created in 4 days. How's that for obsession? Granted, that was for Thief Gold, but DR could do the same as long as I was not obsessed specifically about the level of detail. :)

Maybe I will have to do something like that again. :)

@Fidcal, is there a semi-official list of participants, or at least those who threw a hat in the ring? Don't want to comb again looking for "count me in" type comments. Would be cool to add that to first post as an ongoing list.

Posted

No, there's no official list. I just went quickly through the thread and if anyone said "I'm in!" I took that as a definite and added 1 to my total. If somebody said "maybe" then it went on the fuzzy list. if that person later said "I'm in" then I just added it to the definite total but didn't know at that point if he had previously gone on the maybe list hence the fuzziness.

Shortly before the closing date I'll invite anyone who's not finished to post asking for a brief extension giving the reason and anyone who isn't submitted by the closing date or special extension isn't in. Of course nothing to stop them releasing their FM any time and even including a poll - it just won't get included in the overall points calculation.

Okay I read through and tried to assemble the current list. If I've misread anyone, speak up.

Yeah, mine's still a maybe. It's a very cool concept (I think), but I may not be able to get it finished and ready within three weeks. Maybe.

IS THERE any chance I could join the contest.

Everyone is most welcome to join these contests, but time is running out and it would require a heroic concentrated effort to make a map now from scratch, especially if you're creating your very first map.

There certainly will be contests like this in the future, so maybe you should play some existing maps made by others and learn from them, gather some DR experience and then you're ready to kick some butt in the next contest! ;)

And nothing, of course, prevents you from creating cool missions in the meantime. Start small and simple. It's better to have a small, tense, good looking and fun mission, than a huge mission which is crappy.

I won't have the time, I haven't even started (apart from a very blocky tower that looks like crap) and I'd rather finish my current code projects than produce a mission which can't hold the candle to Sotha's work anyway :)

Happy to hear you won't be distracted.

But, sad to hear any hint of the "why bother?"s... Why Pete Townshend might never have brought us "Who's Next" had he let Hendrix really freak him out as much as he said he did... ;)

Like I said, I'm happy that Tels is going to concentrate on the Mod itself.

And I didn't really take his Sotha thing seriously, just thought I'd say something to all the others who might actually be slightly whats-the-using... "We still want your missions!" "Everybody has good ideas and such and such!" "It isn't really a contest; it's an invitation to a showcase." "I say this all for the sake of the community! (not because I selfishly want more missions to play, oh no)"

And I still hope Tels will make a FM. Seems that's still happening. :D

I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.
