Based on recent TTLG trends, open contests have produced more entries than anonymous ones, probably due to extra encouragement, interest and discussion the contestants and their entries receive. Second, most people have very recognisable building styles, so a voter bias would surface after a while anyway (not to mention entries would be quite identifiable based on Editor's Guild questions). Third, it is fun to look at how things grow before your eyes.

Of course, this supposes a trust in the community's maturity level - trust which I think we can safely extend now.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

I'm going... vertical!

However it wont be a contest entry ;) About 300 doomunits too many and squishing any more would look a bit odd. Had some very interesting thought on vertical map design after 2l of cheap ass boxed dry white... urgh.

Aaaah, send the finished missions to Fidcal and he can throw them up on a server when the time is up, without name and then we play and vote. Afer voting is done the authors is revealed and the winner announced :) Any backdraws?

anonymity wouldn't help for half the contestants. I'm unbearably vain, and have to post screenshots to the WIP thread any time I achieve something i consider to be 'impressive'. That said, my FM would be instantly identifiable as my work. biker has also posted some nice SS's of his upcoming entry as well.

Same here, as it give me motivation to carry on etc..

Anonymous contests I did in the past were a real pain the butt to replace the proper files afterward. Better to just not be anonymous and be mature and fair, I think it's fine

I spent 8 hours yesterday trying to get something to work for this, and its not anything impressive, even when I got it to work its extremely insignificant as moving a rock and throwing it.

You'll find that experimenting with stuff can take weeks with no guarantee of success. With a time limit it is best to build simple and get something finished early then add to it if there is time.

well it was just an event triggerd by a hidden objective, I was trying to trigger it on failure, which didn't work, but it worked by changing it to a not condition and making it complete.

Haha, the biggest issue I have now is the damn sun, litting up my livingroom and makes it almost impossible to build dark places  Maybe I should be out bathing...

It's only embarrassingly so if you were composing Builder Paeans... Hate to see you try and explain that kind of stuff to those co-eds who came bounding (bouncing) up.

Oh...yeah...these are for a...ummm....video game.

"You're making a video game?!"

Oh sure....well, not really. I just kinda use these tools that other guys made, and I make maps.

"What do maps and prayers have to do with video games?"

Oh.....gee.... nevermind, just... go away.

OK, great - I was just wondering if you were working on something new.

Reminder to everyone: Deadline is noon UK time on 19 August so we're nearly half way already! Prepare for ground rush as we get nearer. Leave plenty of time for finishing, objectives, readables (if any) and polishing and testing.

I haven't even started (coded for the last two weeks) and now we will have visitors until next Sunday, so I won't have time until then, either. Grrr@reallife :(

I reached the halfway point last night, so I'm on schedule.

I wasn't around for the xmas contest. Are these things beta-tested like normal maps, or is testing limited to ourselves, because it's a contest and you don't want to give away too much ahead of time?

i suppose you cant cheat and make the tower impossibly high by using a teleportation system to teleport the player between the start and end of a high bit without them realising they've climbed through the same bit 100 times.

There is actually a contest FM that used this trick. I forget the name, but it was in the same contest with Burrick Boy, where there were just 4 or 5 cramped boxes allowed. You didn't climb it 100 times, but multiple times IIRC (in another corner maybe?), from one to the other box, and the teleports were designed to be hidden, although you could usually tell.

Edit: Oh, this is sort of an old post, isn't it... I sometimes lose track of post-dates. This is what happens when the front-page link takes you to the first page instead of the last page.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I just uploaded a new version of the Visible Player Hands mod. It's been updated for TDM 2.13 and has new animations. Check out the post if you're interested!

I moved from Manjaro Linux (rolling release) to Linux Mint (LTS). One of the reasons was that I found the updates a bit too often and long. But now on Mint I get updates every day, although they're usually small updates.

I'd like to track my level design progress a bit more often now, so I'm using the feed in my profile here.
I've been working intensively on Springheel's YouTube course over the past few days. I'm currently up to lesson 8. There is so much information that needs to be processed and practiced.
I have started to create my own house. As I don't have the imagination to create a good floor plan, I grabbed a floor plan generator from Watabou and experimented with it. I chose a floor plan that I will modify slightly, but at least I now have an initial idea.
I used two guards as a measuring tape: The rooms are two guards high. It turned out that I can simply double the number of boxes in DarkRadiant in grid size 8 that are drawn in the floor plan.
I practiced the simplest things on the floor plan first. Drawing walls, cutting walls, inserting doors, cutting out frames, creating VisPortals, furnishing rooms.
I have had my first success in creating a book. Creating a book was easier than I thought. I have a few ideas with books. The level I'm creating will be more or less a chill level, just for me, where I'll try out a few things. I don't have an idea for my own mission yet. I want to start small first.
For the cellar, I wanted to have a second entrance, which should be on the outside. I'm fascinated by these basement doors from the USA, I think they're called Bilco basement doors. They are very unusual in Germany, but this type of access is sometimes used for deliveries to restaurants etc., where barrels can be rolled or lifted into the cellar.
I used two Hatch Doors, but they got completely disoriented after turning. I have since got them reasonably tamed. It's not perfect, but it's acceptable.
In the cellar today I experimented with a trap door that leads to a shaft system. The rooms aren't practically finished yet, but I want to continue working on the floor plan for now. I'll be starting on the upper floor very soon.

On a lighter note, thanks to my cat-like reflexes, my superior puzzle skills and my perfect memory, I was able to beat the remastered version of "Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation" in a new superhuman record time of 23 h : 35 m, worship me!
