This may help you a bit, if you're burned out or struggle with your design goals or work schedule: http://www.worldofleveldesign.com/categories/level_design_tutorials/how-to-have-best-level-design-game-environment-year.php

Destined, as well as Judith.. (that's cool that we also have lasses, in what I imagine is a sea of lads!).

I'll have to disappoint you on that front, I'm male. Judith is just a stupid nickname that was relevant to me around high school, but everyone on TTLG and Thief related sites knows me under that alias, so I keep it. I don't use it anywhere else.

We've had some female builders though. TTLG has even more. We should try to encourge some of them to come over.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

When I first read that, I thought you meant female Builders, and I wondered who made the character models. ;)

Gnomon just uploaded a ton of great videos on YT. These workshops are awesome, but pretty long overall. The presentations are like 20 minutes per person though, so you can watch it in smaller chunks too.

I like this article on unexpected details in things. It applies generally, but it can apply particularly well to mapping, and his main example is building stairs, which a lot of us might appreciate.

Under builder speech there, there's a broken link in this sentance:

"Some builders adopt this speech even in more casual day-to-day affairs, especially if they are older or were raised by the Church. (See here for tips on how to properly use archaic English conventions like thee and thou)"

Back in 1997, I was commissioned to do some art work for a historic society. This was drawn on site, and was a prep drawing before painting it in watercolours.

It's a cool building, I always liked it, and I'm sure could be used in some level. It's a pen and ink drawing.

While I'm showing some drawings lol. Here's another I did. This is some Eucalyptus trees not far from my home. This is drawn pencil on site

then later coloured with colour pencils. I'm in a mood for sharing lol

Here's a painting I'm working on at the moment. This bridge originally crossed into the Venice prison. It was the last look

prisoners had of the free world, before they entered the prison, which is why it's called The Bridge of Sighs. This is just

sketched up, and a thin coat of oil paint to define the waves in the water.

Remembering the thread about the hall of mirror effect, he is actually building it right now.

hehe nice pickup Destined. Yeh this is why I have a thing for Venice. My problem with painting is I tend to be very lazy lol, however if I'm

still around on the forums when it's finished, Will definitely give the forum a nice photo for it to be put in the game if you want. I have another

painting I'm doing on Venice too, that one is further along, but I'm not happy with it, so I'll probably redo it.

I'm something of an aspiring artist, who isn't really adept at figure drawing as yet. I'm greatly inspired by the artistic value in TDM, and I think renderings based on the screenshots, is good practice.

But, I'm inspired, and that's at least something, eh? Perhaps it will lead to mapping down the line, mayhaps not.

If I cannot make or find a reference photo - I make a scene on the computer and pan around it and play with it until it is correct.

It is much easier than dealing with humans. Takes a lot longer but costs a lot less.

Time is more valuable than money, so...

The only reason my town think I have friends is because of the mannequins...

Fk the stairs, try running a carpet down them and keeping the texture in-line.

Not even thinking about adding wear to the shape of the treaded areas, or the lip of each step - way too much hassle to line up.

Must be doing something wrong.

As for TTLG - there's that competition that was open to TDM also...

Matt Easton paying a visit to the Weald and Downland open-air museum.

Some really interesting observations on period buildings (these are mostly early modern era rural buildings, so right up TDM's alley). :)

Since I started working on a Ventian level, I needed reference material. I came across this, and I could not wish for more. :) I doubt I'd be able

to make the palace, and really don't intend to, but it certainly gives a feel for Venitian interiors spaces.

This show scanned the interiors of the Doges palace and many other places. This will lead you to more. :)

Hey, thanks for sharing Neon! Looks like they did two other ones too:

The one for Florence may not be so interesting for mapping purposes, but the Naples one would be a great reference for ancient ruins of some sort

I've started collecting map reference and inspiration images for my TDM missions on a personal Pinterest board. Have a look and see if anything strikes you like it did me. I'll keep updating it as regularly as I remember or need to.

Hey! I have a Pinterest board too. It's pretty good for collecting inspiration. Yours is private to me, so I can't access it. Ironically, mine is set to public but I won't be showing it here since I've gotta have a nice stockpile to keep the thread alive :P

Here's a couple of my latest additions:

I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.
