guess i will post this here...

 

Was searching through the wiki and found this page -> http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=IdTech4_Open_Source

 

I have to admit some of these things sound like "too good to be true", are the things listed there actually possible outcomes or

 

just some kind of "might be possible after 5 years of work" stuff. Would really like to know if some of these might happen

 

after 2.0. :)

I have darkmod2.0 installation + DarkRadiant in it + maps, materials, scripts folders. As I try to dmap even simplest 1 room map, darkmod just don't see its file.

Now, I'm no expert, and certainly not on 2.0 stuff, but "OSPathToRelativePath" sounds like it could be your problem? It's showing up an awful lot in the middle and final quarter of that log, to me it seems that it might not be able to find some files due to some pathing issue?

I have darkmod2.0 installation + DarkRadiant in it + maps, materials, scripts folders. As I try to dmap even simplest 1 room map, darkmod just don't see its file.

First thing I'd try is to get rid of that space in the path. Change directory name "darkmod editor" to "darkmod_editor" or "darkmodeditor". Then change accordingly any links and paths in DR etc.

All people belonging to the TDM team are fans of the original thief series, that's why they are doing this. But basically it is up to all people to contribute if they like to, not only by creating maps but also by adding custom textures, sounds, animations and so one.

 

So if you like to add something, you are happely invited :)

New to TDM. All fantastic work, but im confused on the goal of all this.

Are there gonna be a set of more maps from the TDM team? Or is TDM designed to be a platform for fans to make missions?

 

It's both. Hopefully a campaign from the team will see the light of day, but in the meantime TDM is a playground for mappers to build their own adventures.

Many TDM devs have already released missions. Tears of St. Lucia was created by the whole team (at the time), and maps like A Score to Settle, In the North, Above the City, and others were created by individual developers.

 

But it is also a platform for other mappers, and most of the 70 or so missions to date have been made by fans, for fans.

Hey, just wondering, I was looking at the list of stuff in the To-Do list that can be done with IdTech 4 being open sourced, and im wondering if stuff like GPU skinning and fur shader related things have been worked on at all, since I would love to see the great facial animations that are in the Source Engine in TDM.

 

Also, would stuff like adding Parralax Mapping, Subsurface Scattering, and Ambient Occlusion be possible? That kind of stuff would likely boost the game's graphical power and i think there would be ways to turn those things off for people who dont have very powerful PC's.

 

High Dynamic Range would also be pretty cool.

Per-material shaders should theoretically be possible now that there's access to the renderer. Somehow the code would have to be able to parse material files to determine whether or not to use e.g. a parallax shader. Someone would have to handdraw heightmaps for textures. Beyond those things, I don't know what else would need to be done.

Sikkpin's Doom 3 branch already has most of this but to merge that code TDM's Doom 3 would need to be closer to the dhewg variant he uses. Serpentine was working on that and will presumably resume work on that when he gets a chance. In hindsight it would've been beneficial if Greebo had waited until dhewg was out and mature prior to the "big merge" but... on the other hand... it would have delayed the progress towards standalone and if he didn't do it then who knows when he or someone with his qualifications would get around to it...

 

I personally think a standalone release will attract much more attention than new features even though I personally would prefer the features as I own Doom 3. So it's for the best. And if a few coders end-up playing the standalone release and decide they should improve it then maybe that will be a good recruiting tool. That's the theory anyway. Just trying to start a snowball effect of promotion then recruitment.

Standalone will have a big psychological effect I think. It's so easy to tell people to just download & play, and BTW here's the sourcecode if you want to change anything... You can play with it locally without even asking permission.

Like Thief, TDM has a lot more going on under the hood than most of the action oriented games out there. That level of complexity requires a lot of work to implement and maintain. TDM strives to provide challenging gameplay and while graphics are important, they don't take priority over maintaining the gameplay and ingame performance. Short answer, there simply isn't enough coders to do all the priority work...let alone the 'nice to have' features. :)

From what I recall of the implementation, Parralax mapping would require creating a brand new parralax texture for every texture in the mod. It would also require to keep both versions if we wanted to allow players with lower end systems to 'turn it off'. So unfortunately it's not that simple.

 

High Dynamic Range would also be pretty cool.

 

We attempted putting full HDR into TDM quite some time ago and it simply didn't look good. Our post processing feature is a form of HDR-Lite however, but I think that's as far as we'll go. TDM isn't something that requires blown out graphics.

- There had been rumors/statements about Doom3 still being required for the first install. Is this still true or can people entirely spare the money for that or even uninstall it and sell the disc on eBay?

 

- With the internationalization/translation activity having going on for quite a while, I would assume that a whole bunch of mission updates are about to roll on to the players.

Is there any comprehensive list which missions have received any more updates then just adding translation?

I am sure that a few have received improved gameplay/added areas, whatever else. And in case one was feeling to replay them, how would they know which ones to go for first?

Doom3 is not required.

Where did that rumor come from? Stand alone means exactly that. TDM stands alone, no doom 3 required.

Yeah, I see that list... which states that ~50% of the missions are updated in order to replace textures ... or adding internationalization support.

I was rather curious if there is any info availlable which missions will see significant updates.

That list has nothing to do with language support. Everything listed as having a new pk4 has been updated to run with 2.0. Whether there were changes that you would consider "significant", I have no idea.

I'm not a member of that board, so I cannot vote.

 

I'll just say that such editor could never be as versatile as DR/TDM. On the contrary, instead of doing Dishonored maps for Dishonored, you could do Dishonored style maps and missions with TDM, and probably even more easily. It would just need heavy utilization of premade models with LOD stages, which you could do in DR without even knowing how to use Blender or other 3d modeling software.

 

One of TDM's greatest assets is it's versatility.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh?
