  1. Hello everybody, I hope I posted this to the right place. I really like The Dark Mod, and I downloaded the Dark Radiant today, so I can create my own missions. However, it's not working. Whenever I want to launch it, it says that the "MSVCR120.dll is missing from the computer, reinstalling the program could solve the problem" (I hope the translation is correct, English isn't my native language). Anyway, I'm using a laptop with the Windows 8.1 operating system.
  2. I've enjoyed many missions in TDM and I've also been able to avoid missions that would possibly frustrate me or make me quit playing. This list is heavily responsible for my great enjoyment of TDM: http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Fan_Missions_for_The_Dark_Mod I use that list mainly for these 2 reasons: Check the mission type so I can easily pick indoor or outdoor missions, whatever I'm in the mood for. Nice to have. Check if the mission features monsters, because I dislike combat, jump scares and I mostly enjoy the suspense of blackjacking anything that moves. Critical for me personally. Now if I just played through missions without looking at that wiki list, I would've probably played a lot of missions with monsters and quit a lot of missions. I wouldn't have enjoyed TDM as much as I do now. Being able to identify missions I'll likely enjoy in advance really helps a lot. Sorting and filtering are nice to have, but not necessary. The Dark Mod already shows useful missions details such as "title", "author", "release date" and "size". Would it be possible to also add fields "mission type" and "monsters yes / no" there as well, only in text? Maybe you'll disagree about the monster part. Just be aware that it does make a difference to a player like me. For example: I've never played and never will play beyond the first Thief 1 mission that I've enjoyed with multiple replays, because the second mission features zombies that change the gameplay I enjoy from the first mission to something I don't enjoy. I've heard there are more great missions in that game like the first mission, but that's a loss for both me as a player and possibly the campaign authors who'd want more people to play through their entire campaign unless this choice is intentional. Obviously horror campaigns and horror missions should feature horror. But non-horror campaigns maybe shouldn't do that if they want every player to play through the entire campaign from beginning to end. I won't play through the entire campaigns of William Steele and Shadows of Northdale in sequence because of the missions with undead, even though SoN Act 1 and William Steele's the Warrens are two of my most favorite TDM missions. That's fine by me and maybe that's also fine by the authors. If that result is unintentional and the missions become serialized into a campaign someday, just be aware that these missions might become blocking for players like me.
  3. Hello Today when I started DarkRadiant, it just wouldn't start. It just said something about an Unexpected error. I tried to reinstall the editor, same error, I reinstalled the whole mod, still same error. I have thought of reinstalling Windows for a while and this triggered my thoughts about this. Now I have reinstalled Windows 7 (64 bit) and installed The Dark mod and DarkRadiant. Now I can come into the program, but as soon as I load a map, it crashes...I have tried both 32 and 64 bit versions of the VC++ and older versions of DarkRadiant but same crap...
  4. Has anyone tried running TDM and/or Dark Radiant on Windows 10 yet? I assume its compatible but I plan to upgrade to 10 when it comes out (this summer) so it would be nice to know beforehand

I should have said I tested DR.

  5. Instead of pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete to log in to my computer I pressed Ctrl+Alt+` to bring down the Doom 3 console. Edit: I've just realised I've made this thread in the wrong place. Can someone move it? Sorry about that.
  6. Hello. Just started using Dark Radiant, and have found a problem. Everytime I want to create a model the program would crash asa the 'choose model' window pops up. I'm getting a message that the dark radiant has stopped working. What could be the issue? Win 7, 64 bit.
  7. I loved the Jim Henson movie (saw it first pack in ca. 1988 on VHS) and bought the DVD a few years back for my collection. Has anyone already watched this and if, did you like it?
  8. Did a great find today: Quake 4 mods for dummies. Now online readable. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/5576-book-quake-4-mods-for-dummies/?p=412644

  9. I just got a google alerts for TDM because of an apple update that adds "dark mode", only with a typo.

  10. The Playing Field is going to be streaming himself developing a map for the Dark Mod every Sunday:

Did this end up happening, or was it only streamed but not uploaded as a video?

Good question, I also can't find the video.

Oh hey, I need to put this somewhere more public. It's unlisted, but I'm storing them in a public playlist on my channel. It's how I've seen a bunch of other YouTubers do it to keep their videos section organized.

  11. Thief: The Dark Project was released on November 30, 1998, making it 20 years old today. Everyone here should take a moment to remember this masterpiece today. Needless to say it was the primary inspiration for The Dark Mod, and I like to think that TDM is about upholding the original legacy set by TDP even as the series itself started to lose its own mojo with TDS & T4. Also worth noting that TTLG is having a 20th Anniversary Contest. The relevant thread should be posted in the FM forum soon. http://www.ttlg.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=100 This contest has been in the works for almost a year, some of the entries have been getting rave early reviews, and there's up to 22 FMs for it. Playing them would be a great chance to celebrate the occasion.
  12. Hi, I'm a big fan of the Dark Mod and everything the team has managed to do. Such great work, and such great community maps. All for free too - it's really appreciated. I wondered whether anyone had ever thought of doing what Dark Mod is to Thief for Deus Ex - like take the core systems and open it up to a total mod remake? So it would be I guess the core operations like hacking terminals, different security terminals and core skills, and then open source it and the maps? Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting anyone will ever do it, it would be a phenomenal workload - just curious really. It seems like it would be the perfect sister to the dark mod? Perhaps the more RPG and story centric nature of the game means it wouldn't be a good fit.
  13. I've been gaming on Windows 7 for so long now. However, I am upgrading to a new pc fairly soon. I just wanted to make sure the Dark Mod is running ok in Windows 10.
  14. edit: Problem solved, the culprit was Avast, once that was gone everything was working as intended. So this is very strange but heres what just happened. I was working on my map (specifically with cameras if that matters) and then I wanted to pull something from another map so I fired up a second DR then it wouldn't run giving me "error code: 2" about "gobject-vc110.dll" so I thought that was strange and tried again but no luck. I then uninstalled dark radiant and tried to reinstall but then when the installation got to "gobject-vc110.dll" it said it couldn't rename the file. So I restarted my computer and downloaded a fresh copy of DR straight from source fourge and now it gives me this error (this is the second new copy I downloaded) --------------------------- Error --------------------------- The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- I have tried running it in administrator mode but nothing works. I know computers don't usually just break for no reason but i'm really stumped as to what the problem could be
  15. I have a suggestion I like to mention, since the Dark Mod is turning 10 next year, 2009-2019 We can celebrate the game's 10th anniversary with a special fan mission like no other. I don't have any ideas of what I want to create in Dark Radiant, but if anyone has an idea of what can the mission be and look like to make it a great one to celebrate this big milestone!
  16. I was thinking one major flaw of thief is that you can be in a dark area, but even if there's a lighted area behind you, the enemies can't see you. I always thought this was a bit cheesy. maybe a bit hard to deal with in a game, maybe hard to program, but i think it would really add to the realism if the enemy can see your profile even if your light gem is completely dark, because of the background behind you would highlight your shape and movement.
  17. I have seen quite a few older games have their cinematics and textures upscaled to more modern resolutions using machine learning powered applications. I decided to give one of the Thief videos a shot and this was the result. Took just under 2 hours to process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs4CYxB0PGI
  18. TDM 2.07 is primarily a stability release, aimed at improving several experimental features that were added in 2.06. Soft shadows now work better, for example, with fewer graphical glitches and a new Shadow Map mode that allows for contact hardening (and generally better performance). In addition to greater stability, there are a few new gameplay features, including a new frob helper that can be turned on in the Gameplay menu. Mantling low and medium-sized obstacles is now faster and smoother, and further mantling improvements are already in the works for the next update. There are a few new assets included in the update, including some new architectural module pieces, new chain models, and several trap prefabs (along with videos on how to set them up). For a longer list of changes and additions, see the 2.07 wiki page, or the full changelog. To update to this version, simply run tdm_update.exe in your darkmod folder. edit: Nbohr has posted a lengthy, illustrated description of the changes here: https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dark-mod/news/the-dark-mod-207-stability-release

  20. Not sure if all the taffers over here at TDM are aware, but 24 new missions were just released as part of a contest celebrating the 20th Anniversary of The Dark Project. Check em out when you can. http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149369
  21. I'm very new to using Dark Radiant but what I found strange immediately is the lacking possibility of building the geometry of the level in a subtractive mode. I remember when I played around in DromEd I found it WAY easier to use subtractive geometry to carve out the rooms than to build every wall of a room individually, and even with the "make room" command the handling seems more complicated to me... - the wireframe mode looks far more complicated this way - in the 3d view with texture mode, you can't look inside the rooms when the camera is in the void - making holes in the walls requires changing the wall itself, in contrast to just placing the next room/corridor on the side of the room - in a subtractive mode, one wouldn't need to consider whether the world somehow has a hole into the void Could you explain to a layman like me why Dark Radiant doesn't allow building in substractive mode?
