  1. (I apologize for the odd poll question layout. I wasn't able to add five yes-no questions, because polls are limited to three questions.) Hi everyone, I've recently been working on some patches for issues that I've read about from players on the TDM and TTLG forums — and Discord. My goal is to make it as easy as possible for players, especially new players and those who need usability/accessibility options, to find what they need in order to have a better TDM experience. I've already written the GUI and game engine code for these settings, which I've been using in my personal build. The reason for this poll and discussion is to both guide the finalization of my work and collect data to help inform the dev team. Which patches I submit depend on the outcome of this poll, discussion, and what the dev team agrees to accept. Once decided, I can coordinate with the dev team. I've attached screenshots of what the new settings menu would look like if all of the settings are accepted. Below, I have detailed each menu setting, so you can have an easier time understanding each one. Very important to keep in mind: None of these settings change TDM default behavior. They are all opt-in. If you are already happy with the behavior of 2.10, 2.11, etc. and these menu settings are accepted, nothing will change for you. Rename "Always Run" to "Run Mode" with options "None, Always, Toggle" After 2.11 was released, @i30817 requested that "toggle run" be added to the settings menu. Its cvar is already in TDM as "in_toggleRun" (same as Doom 3). I propose renaming the "Always Run" setting to "Run Mode" with options: "None", "Always", and "Toggle". None = in_alwaysRun 0; in_toggleRun 0 Always = in_alwaysRun 1; in_toggleRun 0 Toggle = in_alwaysRun 0; in_toggleRun 1 Show Blackjack Helper @Wellingtoncrab suggested that the new blackjack helper be added to the settings menu. Its cvar was added to 2.11 as "tdm_blackjack_indicate". More info: It's the new blackjack helper added to 2.11. When the game detects that the blackjack can be used for a successful hit or KO, the blackjack will rise slightly. I propose a "Yes/No" setting for this. Slider for "View: Head Bob" @ChronA requested a way to disable head bobbing, because a viewer watching him play was having severe motion sickness. Also, there was a bug in TDM that made setting the head bob in the console not stick after loading a saved game. (Even with 2.11, if a mission overrides the "tdm_player_thief.def" file and sets "pm_bobroll", "pm_bobpitch", "pm_bobup", and other cvars, it will override player preferences.) As far back as 2008, players have had trouble setting head bob. Another one from 2018. At the end of 2022, @Shadowex3 registered just to voice the need for a way to control head bob. I propose that a slider be added to adjust the amount of head bob. This would use a new "pm_headbob_mod" cvar with a value between 0.0 and 1.0 (default 1.0, no change). The "pm_headbob_mod" would be a multiplier for "pm_bobroll", "pm_bobpitch", and "pm_bobup". The advantage to this approach is that missions like Volta 2 and Hazard Pay would not need to adjust their "tdm_player_thief.def" files for head bob to work properly. And, the player can still adjust "pm_bobroll", "pm_bobpitch", and "pm_bobup" as they like. Slider for "View: Mantle Roll" This is similar to head bob for those who are sensitive to motion. Its cvar was added to 2.11 as "pm_mantle_roll_mod". A Thief player on Discord said, "2.11 will have a cvar to tune down the mantling animation at last." I propose that a slider be added for "pm_mantle_roll_mod". Auto-Search Bodies @Zaratul requested the "auto-search bodies" feature from Thief 1 & 2. Its cvar was added to 2.12 dev16783-10307 as "tdm_autosearch_bodies". I did a poll on the a Thief Discord server and roughly 20% of players there use the Thief auto-search bodies feature. I propose a menu setting for this, so that players coming from Thief 1 & 2 can easily find it.
  2. Awesome! Post is up! https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22200-beta-testing-the-house-of-delisle/#comment-487365 Thanks!
  3. Hi I'm thinking of buying a new pc. Or at least mobo+cpu+memory (and possibly cooler). Last time I bought this combo was 10 years ago, so I thought maybe it's time for an upgrade.. I was thinking of going for AMD Ryzen, do you think it's currently really worth it to go for an AM5 cpu? All in all I find it kind of expensive and AM4 cpu's are still good performing, so I'm not sure I need the newest tech. On the other hand going for AM5 is more future proof I guess.. Also, I was first thinking of going for an X3d processor, but then gathered I'm actually not gaming that much (and not high demanding games) and the gpu will stay midrange anyway and thus be the bottleneck ? I wonder if the price of the 5800X3d will go down when the zen4 variant arrives. Currently thinking about Am4 combo: Ryzen 5700X 32 gb ram (3200mhz) Asrock B450 Steel Legend My current (Cooler master) cpu cooler is good enough I think, but I don't know if I still have the needed AM4 attachment (curently using it on an Intel cpu).
  4. I used Win7 till 2019 and then I switched to Manjaro Linux xfce. A user friendly fast rolling distro. I still have win7 as backup in multiboot, but I almost never use it. Btw. why did you upgrade to Win 11? Is it better than Win10?
  5. Use something else? Seriously, Microsoft basically declared war on their customers a wile ago. Probably when they did this. https://www.extremetech.com/computing/241587-microsoft-finally-admits-malware-style-get-windows-10-upgrade-campaign-went-far Anywho, the point is that anything you do to make the modern Windows computer work for and serve you, will be undone by their updates. Designing interfaces to abuse and manipulate users and "wear them down" until they just accept what a company is pushing has become a literal art form; this practice is widely referred to as a "dark pattern". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_pattern One example of a dark pattern, is giving you a "yes" and a "not now" selection of buttons, as opposed to a "yes" and a "no" button, perhaps with a "and don't ask me again" checkbox like we had in software in the 1990s. Hint for any software developers out there, how do you know when your interface is abusive? If you wouldn't put those moves on the opposite sex, then you shouldn't pull them on your customers. "Hey sweetie, would you prefer to go out with me today, or next week?"
  6. Let's say, hypothetically, your body was mangled in an accident. But, by stroke of luck, Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk or someone decides YOU are the lucky bastard that they'll spend high-tech charity on. They can remove your brain and put it in an immobile canister to keep you alive, with a face screen to see out of. You can still talk to visiting family or watch T.V., but that gets boring. So Elon/Jeff/Smartypants Whoever decides to give your life machine a great upgrade: You are able to have video games uploaded as actual Virtual Reality worlds you can inhabit. So, what games would you guys choose if you had such an option to live in them? Personally? I would choose the original spyro trilogy, probably reignited for the better graphics, followed by the original Thief trilogy, the 2014 Thief, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, Gex 3 Deep Cover Gecko, the Sly Cooper series, the inFamous series but especially Festival of Blood, Borderlands series especially Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, the Uncharted series, Left 4 Dead and Half Life 2, Vermintide series, Resident Evil series because I'd love to own a badass mansion full of monsters, the House of the Dead Overkill, Starcraft Warcraft and Diablo series, the Ratchet and Clank series, Elder Scrolls series, Fallout series, I'd love to live in these worlds as long as I wasn't in danger of actually dying. At least as long as I'm not stuck without any actual human interaction, it would be cool!
  7. TDM 2.09 is ready for beta test In order to update, you have to use the new tdm_installer this year. Custom mirrors file is not needed any more. Windows 64-bit, Fresh install (slow): 1 - Create darkmod folder anywhere you like. 2 - Download the TDM Installer. Extract tdm_installer.exe from the downloaded ZIP and place it in your darkmod folder. 3 - Start tdm_installer.exe. 4 - On the first screen, check "Get custom version" and click "Next". Choose the first name in beta/2.09 list, should look like "beta209-NN". 5 - Continue installing with "Next". Windows 64-bit, Upgrade from any version (fast): 1 - Download the TDM installer. Extract tdm_installer.exe from the downloaded ZIP and place it in your darkmod folder. 2 - Start tdm_installer.exe. 3 - On the first screen, check "Get custom version" and click "Next". Choose the first name in beta/2.09 list, should look like "beta209-NN". 4 - Click on "Refresh" button to ensure that it is not going to download too much stuff. 5 - Continue installing with "Next". Linux 64-bit, Fresh Install (slow): 1 - Create darkmod folder anywhere you like. 2 - Download the TDM Installer. Extract tdm_installer.linux64 from the downloaded ZIP and place it in your darkmod folder. 3 - Make tdm_installer.linux64 executable: "chmod +x tdm_installer.linux64" 4 - Start tdm_installer.linux64. 5 - On the first screen, check "Get custom version" and click "Next". Choose the first name in beta/2.09 list, should look like "beta209-NN". 6 - Continue installing with "Next". Linux 64-bit, Upgrade from any version (fast): 1 - Download the TDM installer. Extract tdm_installer.linux64 from the downloaded ZIP and place it in your darkmod folder. 2 - Make tdm_installer.linux64 executable: "chmod +x tdm_installer.linux64" 3 - Start tdm_installer.linux64. 4 - On the first screen, check "Get custom version" and click "Next". Choose the first name in beta/2.09 list, should look like "beta209-NN". 5 - Click on "Refresh" button to ensure that it is not going to download too much stuff. 6 - Continue installing with "Next". In general, upgrade is recommended over fresh install. If you want to have 2.08 installation nearby, then you can copy it and upgrade the copy. If your current installation has a lot of custom stuff (own maps, downloaded FMs, etc.), then you can copy only the core archives named "tdm_*.pk4" --- tdm_installer will reuse whatever it can from them. At the end of installation, tdm_installer resets your config by renaming darkmod.cfg to darkmod_{datatime}.cfg. This is a recommended procedure on upgrade, otherwise you are likely to have issues due to old config. If you need your old config for some reason, you can always find it in darkmod folder. 32-bit builds of TDM are deprecated, so they are not present in beta versions yet. They will be added to beta-testing later. Notes 1 - This effort is to find out if we broke anything in TDM with our 2.09 changes, if a new 2.09 feature isn't working correctly. We won't be trying to fix bugs that have been around for a long time. Instead, we will create an issue in bugtracker (if not yet present), to fix it after beta. 2 - If you find something wrong, it would be helpful if you report whether the issue happens in 2.08 too. By the way, you can easily get 2.08 version: just copy your darkmod folder and run tdm_installer on the copy, selecting "release2.08" on the custom version screen. 3 - Please try to be specific when reporting a problem. What you were doing, where you were when the problem occurred, can you reproduce it, etc. This wiki article provides many suggestions for good bug reports. Thank you for testing !

  8. Hi guys, through the "cheats" topic I got the idea, that it would be quite useful, if there were tags for missions (the post was about removing the killing restriction in some missions to suit the prefered play style). I don't know how easy or difficult this is, but with them, it would be quite convenient to pick missions with playstyles, environment, etc one does want to use. This could also be expanded to other mission properties. I remember a discussion about climbable drains, handles on doors, that cannot be picked and other things the map author chooses for himself. That way these things would be clearer and as I said before, it is easier to choose missions with playstyles that suit oneself. What do think?
  9. can somebody fix the mainpage of our site? http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/19469-new-layout-error/

It's under construction at the moment.

  10. Interesting advise, but I won't do that. I'm fine with my AMVA screen and the crt screens are too bulky and give eye strain. I didn't upgrade my pc yet. I might wait a bit for AM5 mobo prices to go down.

Did the TDM team removed D3's internal Joypad feature? (tdm works only with systemkey binders for joysicks)

Thanks to shadrach, i got my joypad working in TDM on steam link!

  13. id Studio did a poor job in defining its categorization of variable nomenclature, so in subsequent documentation and discussions there are divergent views (or just slop). In my series, I had to choose something, and went with what I thought would be clearest for the GUI programmer: Properties, which are either Registers (like true variables) Non-registers (like tags) User Variables (also true variables) I see that your view is more along these lines (which perhaps reflects C++ internals?): Flags (like my non-registers) Properties, which are either Built-in (like my registers) Custom (like user Variables) Also, elsewhere, you refer to "registers" as temporaries. I am willing to consider that there could be temporary registers during expression evaluation, but by my interpretation those would be in addition to named property registers. I'm not sure where to go next with this particular aspect, but at least can state it.
  14. my current phone is a huawei p20 lite but ill soon need a need one with a bigger screen (my darn eyesight is to bad for the small screen of this model) sucks getting old :P. godot 4 Oo well guess it is time for msys2 to upgrade again i guess, does it still use scons for building or have they changed to cmake ?.
  15. I think it wasn't fully implemented during the initial upgrade from IPB 3.x to 4.x, but if it's working again, may as well keep it.
  16. Thanks, I can also recommend gog galaxy. The idea of the custom tags is really nice, I'll have to try this out too!
  17. Keep in mind also that mission size, and complexity have increased dramatically since the beginning. For a lot of veteran mappers, it can take over a year to get a map made and released. The last dozen missions have for the most part been pretty massive, with new textures, sounds, scripts, models etc. We seem to be long past the point of people loading up the tools, and banging out a mission in a few weeks that's very barebones. We still do see some of those, but I noticed in the beta mapper forums and on Discord, that mappers seem to make these maps, but don't release them, and instead use the knowledge gained to make something even better. Could just be bias on my part scrolling through the forums and discord server though.
  18. I used a Lumia 735, which was a mid-range model. This also got the upgrade to Windows Mobile 10,
  19. YOU TAFFERS! Happy new year! Deadeye is a small/tiny assassination mission recommended for TDM newcomers and veterans alike. Briefing: Download link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JWslTAC3Ai9kkl1VCvJb14ZlVxWMmkUj/view?usp=sharing Enjoy! EDIT: I promised to someone to write something about the design of the map. This is in spoiler tags below. Possibly useful to new mappers or players interested in developer commentary.
  20. I just upgraded my really old pc last weekend to am4. Frankly, I'm kind of budget conscious and I don't really upgrade often so am5 wasn't on my radar. I just checked and I can actually load up and walk around in Painter's Wife at something more than a few frames per second. I have some time this weekend, so I know what I'm doing.
  21. AM4 dead platform at this point, save up some more for AM5, expected to have updates for 5 years at least. 7700X on AM5 will smoke the 5700X, though it won't be as cheap. So save up some more. To be fair, the 5700X is still a good CPU, it just doesn't really give you an upgrade path.
  22. It is a nice concept.... but then AI got equipped with fancier, cooler flints and the player is left with zero chances to upgrade. Was the idea to make players feel miserable or unworthy? I don't think so, but that's how I felt. Leave no trace. Lighting candles and oil flames back up once an area is clear is part of my job, and let me tell ya: IT IS FUN!
