  1. Ah, it's the Aniso x16 issue. I forgot to turn it down to x8. That's an issue going way back, by the way: sometimes when you look at a surface at acute angles, you get GPU load spikes, without any visible reason. I never had problems with other games going all the way to AF x16. Wonder what's with that in TDM. Anyway, I tested it with uncap FPS and VSync off too. I've never heard my GPU fans being this loud Default material: Geometry: POM:
  2. Happy 15th Anniversary to The Dark Mod! As of October 17th. 2024, 15 years have passed since the TDM 1.0 release! In that time, we evolved to most or all of the features that players were asking for since the concept of TDM was first mooted in the TTLG forums in late 2004. Campaign Support, Soft Shadows, EFX Reverb, Multi-Core Rendering, Uncapped FPS, Ambient Occlusion, Subtitles, are among the roster of perennial requested things that have been brought to life by the development team in addition to the core Thief 1 \ 2 game-play items like the Lightgem, Rope Arrows, Swim-able water, lock-picking and ( of course ) advanced AI enemies. To commemorate this occasion, please join us in celebrating the Release of 5 missions for our 15th Anniversary Contest! . The Imperial Sword Bikerdude was encouraged to reclaim an abandoned version of his older mission and rework it into a new one. Now the formerly lost work is a glorious new experience with scripted dialog, special events, and a decayed imperial cityscape! . The Wizard’s Treasure Thebigh has made yet another bite-sized mission with a focus on quality game-play and challenge. The mission is extra impressive for the scope and visuals achieved since his decision to join the contest was fairly late compared to other entrants. . You Only Fly Thrice DeTeEff has continued his progression of high quality and complex releases. Another relative late comer to the contest, this mission is a tour-de-force of excellent game-play ideas and is quite handsome with excellent volumetric lighting and modular asset usage. . Volta 3: Gemcutter Kingsal has decided to release his long awaited Volta Series sequel to be included in the contest. DO NOT MISS THIS MISSION! . Pinnacle: A Test of Talents UncertainTitle and TwilitWitch decided to risk their first mission release to be included in the contest roster. The use of both modular assets and many custom models give this mission a familiar yet refreshing visual appeal. . Please join the celebration and vote in the forum threads for each respective mission based on their contest criteria ( Game-play, Story, Visuals ). . . The Dark Mod 2.13 “Developer Build” The Dark Mod 2.13 is still a few months away from release but we wanted to highlight the fact that a few more of the long requested changes have been added in the upcoming release! . Parallax Occlusion Mapping! In the above video, you can see a that TDM has finally incorporated the long requested effect. This wont be applied to all textures since there may be some problems with visual anomalies and performance but we are already preparing for a future where lots of textures use this new and more three dimensional surface effect. Better AI sight! While the AI have always been good at seeing the player due to the lightgem ( sometimes “too good” so we had to nerf their sight ), AI have had various challenges seeing things like bodies, missing objects, opened doors, weapons, blood, etc. This is because it is not practical to give all entities \ objects their own lightgem. Instead we have used very simple math to represent lights which don’t match shadow and light textures. In 2.13 a new sampling approach aims to improve this so that AI can better see ( or not see ) items and bodies in a way that better matches the actual lighting in the mission. Mission Search! There is now a search window where you can specify the mission author or title to help you find your preferred mission rather than scrolling through over 170 missions. You can also change how mission titles are rendered with either the original title or the title with prefix words like “A, The” moved to the end. Improved Training Mission! The Training Mission has been upgraded to include a Vine Arrow tutorial, a Slow Match tutorial, EFX Reverb, Volumetric Lights, and some performance optimizations! Translation Packs! Between TDM 1.06 and 2.0 Tels and the translating community started translating many missions but these translations required that the original mission be altered in a way that made it harder for the mission authors to revise. The meant that translation packs were in limbo being hosted by 3rd party sites \ forums along with their orphaned old missions. The translators over at the Darkfate forums came up with an solution by including not only the translation strings in the translation pack but also the altered map files, GUI defs, etc that had translation work done to them. This would leave the original mission untouched but allow translation packs to override some parts. We have gone through the old archive of these translations and have reworked them to work with the latest version of TDM (and the associated missions). Most of the translations are Russian ( due to the continued work of the Darkfate people ) but many of the early TDM missions also have German, Italian, French, etc translations too. Subtitles! Datiswous has been creating story subtitles for many of the existing missions in the TDM mission database. Most authors have incorporated these into their official releases, otherwise players can still add them to the FM folder. . Hidden Hands: Blood and Metal Campaign Just before the 15th anniversary entries were starting to arrive, JackFarmer released an enormous 5 mission campaign that continues his well regarded “Hidden Hands” series!

  3. I would like the development team to consider applying the GPL3 licence to the following Text file which was created by @Tels, @Greebo and @Dragofer. tdm_internal_engine.mtr (darkmod>materials) The reason for this request is that it is a critical core file and without it the engine (when built from source) cannot launch at all. I would also like to query whether the following script files created by @Obsttorte and @Dragofer: tdm_audiograph.script tdm_camgoyle.script tdm_grandfather_clock.script tdm_safe_lock.script tdm_safe.script tdm_turret.script were intentionally released under the CC-BY_NC_SA_3 licence or if this was an oversight? I ask since all other .script files included with TDM (and which are all called by the engine source) all contain GPL3 headers while these files have no licence information at all so naturally fall under the CC-BY_NC_SA_3 licence. Additionally in investigating which text files are required by the engine depending on scenario (and while I understand that the number of developers who are no longer on the development team may affect how many of these files can be licenced) I wondered if these too may be open for consideration as to their licence? tdm_base.def tdm_soundprop.def cursor.gui mainmenu_background_custom.gui mainmenu_background.gui mainmenu_briefing_video.gui mainmenu_briefing.gui mainmenu_credits_background.gui mainmenu_credits.gui mainmenu_custom_defaults.gui mainmenu_custom_defs.gui mainmenu_debriefing_video.gui mainmenu_defs.gui mainmenu_download.gui mainmenu_failure.gui mainmenu_loadsave.gui mainmenu_main_ingame.gui mainmenu_main.gui mainmenu_message.gui mainmenu_music.gui mainmenu_newgame.gui mainmenu_objectives.gui mainmenu_quit.gui mainmenu_settings_audio.gui mainmenu_settings_controls.gui mainmenu_settings_gameplay.gui mainmenu_settings_gamma.gui mainmenu_settings_guisize.gui mainmenu_settings_language.gui mainmenu_settings_video.gui mainmenu_settings.gui mainmenu_shop.gui mainmenu_success.gui mainmenu_utils.gui mainmenu.gui msg.gui tdm_objectives_core.gui tdm_subtitles_common.gui tdm_subtitles_message.gui tdm_gui.mtr tdm_tables.mtr tdm_guis.sndshd all.lang english.lang These provide the foundation of a working base main menu. TDM's main menu also includes several undocumented commands (that neither show in listcmds nor listcvars) which are useful to know for anyone wishing to use the base source code. I have listed the .lang files solely because of the #StringNum associations, I appreciate that they are not truly required for the above to be a foundation. While looking into how far I could break TDM in removal of files, I came across this thread by @Fiver suggesting a Libre version of TDM: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22346-libre-version-of-tdm/ I believe that in that instance all text based files would need to be GPL3 licenced, leaving only videos, sounds, textures, models and the like as still being under the CC_BY_NC_SA_3 licence since remaking the files would likely result in most cases with near-identical looking files to the original. Thankyou for your consideration.
  4. Definitely do the first run on easy, the difficulty adds a few extra guards and reduces the arrows you start with. The loud footsteps surprised me too, I guess it's how the stone material propagates... I positioned some of the carpets to mitigate hearing based difficulty, don't forget to make use of moss arrows too where appropriate. And yeah I should have made the intended way to exit more obvious, if I ever update this I'll consider it.
  5. Since Aluminum directed me here ( https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/9082-newbie-darkradiant-questions/page/437/#comment-475263 ) can we have unlimited renderer effects? Well, maybe not unlimited, by maybe 3-5? Thanks.

Since I wasn't the one mainly asking, I'll just cite you in the original thread instead.

There already is a kind of sorting, sort nearest, sort decal, sort <n>. For things like windows and such, sort nearest should probably have the desirable affect, though looking through multiple translucent shaders might kill performance.

    4. Nort

      Nort

Is having multiple render effects really killing performance that badly? I don't understand. You're saying that if I have two transparent objects side-by-side, then they'll just count as two render effects, but when combined, they somehow become something much more difficult to render?

Never-the-less, unless we're talking some kind of infinite portal problem, why not let the mapper choose how much he wants to kill performance? Just warn him against putting too many effects close together.

  6. Something wrong with the hosts? See following topic for the investigation. https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22663-cannot-download-dark-mod/
  7. Maybe something is wrong on the hosts on that time? Others cant download it as well. https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22662-error-missing-end-chunk-0-193/
  8. It's neither subjective, nor is it that hard to judge. If you take a look at most FMs, there are not only more enemies, but also more loud surfaces like marble, less areas to hide, less areas to hide bodies, more undead you can't kill etc. Yeah, there are these 3 man patrols in TMA you mentioned, but, actually, they're pretty trivial to knockout, as per default, in TMA, guards next to each other don't even notice when you knock their colleague out. Some (most?) FMs modify that behavior though. I played a lot of Thief Gold and II FMs lately, where the distance where guards notice you knocked someone out is signficantly bigger.
  9. r_bloom_weight is set to "0.7" both in my 2.12 installation and in main repository. I never touched those values which means the default must be 0.7. Troy Sobotka is the original creator of AgX. He was active on Blender forums where he had long philosophical arguments about color with people. Also on Blender developer forums. I don't know if there's much more beyond those and his github page: https://github.com/sobotka Edit @stgatilov AgX however is a direct continuation of Sobotka's earlier 'Filmic', so there may be more about that: https://github.com/sobotka/filmic-blender https://blender.stackexchange.com/questions/164991/are-the-technical-details-of-filmic-available
  10. It might be best to simply encourage them to come to the forums
  11. toslink hmm sometimes but my old phillphs uses a standard s/pdiff newer actually used the soundbar for it hehe that nakamichi allmost looks like pioneers old auto casette reverser eg. spits out the casette then turns it 180"to play the other side. i can imagine it to have some delicate parts . hehe yeah most things today have single buttons with multi purpose my damn clock radio for one (smashes it again not because its loud but because you have to hit the same button 20 times to turn it off lol). got one of the older sony surround amplifier sets, loads of buttons more buttons buttons galore... but i prefer it like that
  12. There's a person messaging the Dark Mod twitter account, saying they can do a Catalan translation of the game. I pointed them in the direction of the Wiki and the forums, but they're saying they want to email someone about it. I'm not really involved in the translation side of things, so I don't have any useful input here. Any ideas?

      datiswous

Yeah and the wiki and moddb. It should have those links in the footer I think. Probably easy to add by an admin.

Edit: And a link to the bugtracker. I'm always searching for a post in the forum that links to that because I can't remember the url.

Reluctance to improve the forums is matched by reluctance to allow more people to work on it. Talk about trust and power.

  15. Well .. making "models" for 1 NPC, splitting it in normal, soft and loud, in tortoise TTS takes me 3 days and produces 3 1.6 Gb models. It's just too much. Besides that, tortoise TTS with all the NPC voice models could be hosted for instance on discord, but one should have a dedicated high spec computer running 24/7 to make it available for everyone at any time. So that is kinda not realistic : P A friend of mine has made a Discord bot that runs LLM's from her own pc, and she can also run stable diffusion/sdxl and probably also TTS. I think she wouldn't mind sharing her discord bot/app code if someone is really intrested to use it for this purpose.
  16. Horror themed fan mission - exploration of seemingly deserted keep in the middle of swamps. Spiders, undead, darkness. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the story about the fate of my family. My uncle, Ralph Mac Roberts, is the baron of a keep nestled deep within the Rahenaen marshes. It was once an important outpost tasked with guarding one of the few Builder roads that cross the marsh, but after the Inventor`s Guild built a system of nearby dams that flooded the whole land, the road closed and there was no longer anything to watch over anymore. The keep itself needed reinforcement against the raising water level and the trade routes become almost impassable, not only for the carriages but for lone couriers as well. There hadn`t been any messages coming from the keep for over a year and my father was about to assemble a caravan so he could go on an expedition to the keep himself. However, in the middle of the night before he was set to leave, a carrier pigeon landed on his windowsill. My father received the letter and read the apologies from my uncle and his family, excusing their long absence. As a way to make reparations for their extended silence, my uncle invited me to the keep to stay there for a fortnight or so. My uncle had instructed me to leave my horse three leagues away from the keep by the nearest charcoal burning hut and hike the remainder of the road on foot, as the trek through the marsh is treacherous for horses. The weather will be awful this time of year, but my father insists that I should go anyways to ensure that our relatives are okay. These plains become dreadfully deserted - to the point where you more expect to meet the dead than the living. And by the way - I think I`m lost. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Download link: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aj1DVS465udZgVkXteBbr6cUxdPH Thanks: to the TDM team for great tools, and all the contributors for their assets, to betatesters: Amadeus, Bienie, Boiler's_hiss, Dragofer, Filizitas, Judith, nbohr1more, s.urfer, again to Amadeus for proofreading and text tweaks, and to all the players for their time! 17. I am pleased to announce the release of our new fan mission, The Hare in the Snare: Part 1 Mission type: City Missions + Inn/Tavern Description: People are being abducted off the streets and a Watch Captain requires the services of a thief to help him find out why. Download link (v1.0.2-release): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HYvM_u56wDB16uIlb7qgS_q3P24V69MO/view?usp=sharing Credits: Mapping and original characters: @Frost_Salamander Story, readables, custom models, voices and cinematics: @Kerry000 Menu title track produced and mixed by @JackFarmer with selected gigagooga sound samples Beta testers: @Cambridge Spy @Zerg Rush @Amadeus @Acolytesix @Lzocast @wesp5 @nbohr1more @Kerry000 @ate0ate @Wellingtoncrab @prjames Additional thanks: @Dragofer, @nbohr1moreand @peter_spyfor technical help @Springheel for the modules and tutorials @kingsalfor allowing @Kerry000to abuse his manbeast everyone else on Discord and the TDM forums who offered assistance Requirements and notes: This mission requires TDM 2.09. Earlier versions will probably work but you might see one or two missing models. You may experience some FPS drops in some areas with lower-end hardware. Mid-range and above should be fine. If you have issues, I highly recommend you use shadow maps instead of stencil (settings -> advanced -> shadows implementation). It makes a big difference. For 'Hard' and 'Expert' the light gem sensitivity has been increased by '1' (meaning easier for AI to detect you). Screenshots:
  18. Unfortunately, I don’t think this is possible—at least not with the way the mod is currently implemented. All the models and animations are tied to the “unarmed” weapon entity, not the player entity. In order to have the legs and the rest of the body, we would need to add the models and animations to the player entity and modify the source code to allow the body to be visible, kind of like how it's done here. I did initially try this method but realized that the existing model/animations are a bit of a mess and it would be a LOT of work to make it look good. Also, I chose to do it this way to allow the mod to be compatible with everything, since the script and def files for the "unarmed" entity aren’t modified by any FMs (as far as I know—I haven’t tested them all). I assumed that someone may have tweaked the player files for their FM, as those are far more relevant than the "unarmed" files (which are essentially blank in the vanilla game). If I had overwritten them, I’d risk breaking their mission. There has been some discussion in the forums about having full body awareness and there didn't seem to be a lot of interest in it. Plus, it could end up being immersion-breaking. Imagine standing on a small rope and then looking down, only to see your feet just kind of floating in midair.
  19. You are assuming way too much, and you're creating artificial pressure. Nobody in the public forums knows whether TDM team even considered including this feature in TDM core, regardless of its completion state or quality. Obviously you have right to have a personal opinion on the modification itself (which I think is cool too). Sorry for the offtopic here Jivo, you're doing great, and don't let this little side note distract you from your work
  20. To be honest... I've only played ⅓ of this FM. Steampunk to the hilt - an Airship (not the only one, but the best so far). After walking a few miles in Mr.Mortimer's shoes, I think that kind of specialist, has it 'easy'. Or is the luckiest assasin alive; If the locations / people / things are randomized (and they appear to be a little); it has the highest replayability of any single FM so far. (and its NOT a huge maze-like map...infact it has ingame floor-plan posters on some walls) Also, it should be noted; The TENSION-O-METER, works PER-ROOM. (not quite obvious to me until had played a bit more) -Very excellent idea, and works well for this map. There are some HILARIOUS (limitations) TDM's assets make for such an exotic local as the passenger gondola of an airship. Also the thunder claps seem to cut right thru the (quite thin) walls, seems overly loud [I personally don't like it]. Mis-using Inventor scientists as pilots/technicians must be VERY wage invensive, and broadsword armed guards - mabey they could have a baton or a club instead, seems overkill for unarmed passenger security. A few AI bugs cause NPC's to spin-in-place when blocked by annother AI... Guards/Crew are very twitchy about nefarious passengers sneaking into forbidden areas; mabey VERY explicit signs / wall-paint or "crew-only" decor features let the player know they are in ; less fancy fittings or plain-metal walls / no decor. Trying to replicate: > THIS < in TDM and getting anywhere close is an accomplishment. Good Job My Rating: PLAY IT NOW. (Unless you are already playing Volta 3...)
  21. @stgatilov Even better news! The following commit fixed this issue regardless of r_tonemapOnlyGame3d setting. r10930 | stgatilov | 2025-01-25 | 7 lines Clear background during main menu. This fixes the issue e.g. with AT1: Lucy and tonemap disabled. The briefing there does not use any backgrounds, and no-clear policy results in HOM-like effects. 22. I can't seem to find if this has been solved already so here goes..I started playing "Full Moon Fever" and it seems that Lights/TDM_Lanternlight is the source of a VERY loud Constant HUM. So Much so that I can't play the mission. I'm Playing around with the Console and "Editsounds" but it does not list a Lights/TDM_Lanternlight. I know its the source because if I Flip a Switch in game that turns the Lights off the sound disappears. Any help would be appreciated and keep on making GREAT missions
  23. Hello, everyone! I've done some searches in the forums, and looked in the troubleshooting on the wiki, but there's a problem that's been in Dark Mod for the past version or two that's now prevalent enough for me to log in and report. Not sure if it's an issue with the Dark Mod itself or just one model of light that someone developed and is using in more and more missions, but it's driving me nuts. In several missions, electric lights are used and the tone the game has them emanate...well, I'm supposing it's supposed to be a soft hum, but instead it's a piercingly loud sine wave kind of tone, like you'd hear if you were taking a hearing aid test. It's literally deafening compared to the sounds in the rest of the game, and as more and more levels use this light, it's really cutting down on the levels I want to play. Since no other users seem to be reporting this, I'm wondering if it's because of my particular audio configuration. I am using EAX (through Creative ALchemy) on Windows 10 on a current Sound Blaster card, so I'm wondering if somehow the EAX processing is making the sound so damn loud. The latest mission that seems to have this sound is "In The Black." I'm including a screenshot of one of the lamps in question. This one is in kind of an odd spot on an internal balcony railing, and I can hear it buzzing from well down the hall in another room. There are other rooms that have several of these lamps as well. Is there any kind of tweaking I can do in the .pk4 files to silence this model of lamp until the issue is resolved? I really want to be able to play these missions without being deafened. I'm up for any kind of troubleshooting, or if you'd like me to make a recording from a USB mic of how loud the tone is compared to other sounds in the game to hear exactly what I'm experiencing.
  24. I've never felt more connected to a protagonist in any media! (though in my neighborhood its vehicles with loud engines or loud speakers, or both...) stats:
