STRUNK
@freyk Nice freek!! Very nice that you took that opertunity and that you were on the program. Popular Post STiFU
I've been using the free time due to the corona-lockdown to finally learn OpenGL. Graphics programming has been on my bucket-list for quite some time, so I had a lot of fun learning this! However, the inital motivation to learn OpenGL was actually to add Bloom back into TDM. As you probably know, the mighty @cabalistic has beaten me to it, which is pretty damn good, because my first try at Bloom yesterday was really bad!! I ended up integrating his bloom into my testproject.
Diego
Yes! I really do miss the status thing. Why isn't this pinned yet? @STiFU Have you considered skipping ahead to Vulkan? From what I heard it drops a lot of inconveniences we have been dragging with opengl and dx and is easier to work with. Here's my game project I mentioned in that other topic: Quote I decided to make a game for the SEGA Mega Drive (Genesis for the Americans). It's a grid platformer akin to Flashback, prince of persia, blackthorne and others. I reject the term "cinematic platformer"; I think it's silly. But, brushing aside nostalgia, the only things I like about those games is the animation, obviously, and the grid snapping. There is potential for strategic gameplay in grid-based games and I think those games I mentioned should have focused less on precision platforming and more on semi puzzle gameplay. So I'm making it a stealth game! I don't think Mega Drive has any of those yet. Having some fun with debug logs: I have currently 4 game dev projects, which I cycle through periodically, but this is my main obsession right now. You have been misinformed on the "easier to work with" part If you'd like to get an impression of what it's like to work with Vulkan, just take a quick glance at the https://vulkan-tutorial.com/ section for "drawing a triangle" and see what is involved in even just setting up an extremely simple scene in Vulkan. It's beyond crazy.

It's beyond crazy. I might be! That tutorial looks complex but I would have to compare with the equivalent in OpenGL. Even then there's a risk they will both look like complex gibberish to me! There's got to be an advantage though, right? maybe it scales better when you start to get an engine up and running with modern features. cabalistic
Trust me, the equivalent OpenGL or DX11 tutorials are significantly simpler Well, the advantage is that it gives you a lot more control over the graphics pipeline, which also eliminates a lot of implicit assumptions and verifications needed from the driver. That *can* result in better performance and significantly reduced driver overhead, if you know what you're doing. Imho, Vulkan is aimed at professional engine developers, not hobby developers. Not that the latter can't use Vulkan, but it will eat a significant chunk of your dev time for questionable benefits.

Also, GLSL is sooooo simple, it's just straightforward to learn. Yes! I really do miss the status thing. Why isn't this pinned yet? Yes, maybe some of the admin's could pin it. Anderson
I'm sorry in advance if this is a stupid question but if anyone has any ideas, they are very welcome! When I was working on a document in microsoft word, having some music from YouTube playing, the laptop suddenly turned off without any warning. It did not turn back on as fast as it does usually. Then, not without some hesitation it did turn on but the keyboard did not work. In device manager the keyboard driver driver "Standard PS/2 Keyboard" had an error something about time out. After some screwing around, disassembling the laptop, cleaning dust, disconnecting and connecting the connector tape and in the end praying for almighty google "me stupid, me no understand" - I found out that my keyboard and/or BIOS drivers must be wrong. Deleted the keyboard drivers and now it works. Just in case updated BIOS and processor drivers and everything else the "System Update" app from the Lenovo website offered. Question: Did the computer turn off suddenly because of some deprecated/conflicting BIOS update or is the problem with the keyboard drivers and I should update that as well to prevent future instant shutdowns? I'm just a little paranoid to lose work progress if something happens suddenly and I have a deadline this month. People on forums mention that for some, installing an "ELAN pointing device" touchpad driver helped as well. However the touchpad worked for me and it always had the "ELAN pointing device" drivers. Should the keyboard driver also be ELAN or is it okay as it is and I'm just overreacting? Shadow
What I think might have happened is your computer needed a reboot for the background security updates it does. A few things you can do. You can postpone the updates for a week. You can set the time when the computer is allowed to update (just set it out of the range of your usage hours). You can actually completely turn off any ability to update (metered connection), but that's not advised long-term, at least by me. As far as the keyboard goes, sounds like a driver superseded another driver during an update and perhaps it didn't complete installation or was faulty. Either the installed Lenovo apps did this or Windows update did this. Since you deleted the driver and it worked after, I'm thinking the Lenovo drivers took over and after deleting them the default MS drivers got installed from the repository folder. In Device Manager you can see which driver is being used by which manufacturer. Usually I tend to trust the MS drivers unless there is some functionality needed beyond its basic function (think all-in-one scanners/printers). As last resort you can just plug in a USB keyboard if it happens again. BTW, check event viewer in / control panel / administrative tools / to see what happened at the time of the shutdown. It could give a clue as to a conflicting issue. Edited August 19, 2020 by Shadow

I've installed the drivers after I figured out that they were the problem with the help of the Lenovo "System Update" app. The Lenovo "System Update" app was never installed on the computer beforehand. OrbWeaver
On 8/9/2020 at 6:41 AM, cabalistic said: You have been misinformed on the "easier to work with" part If you'd like to get an impression of what it's like to work with Vulkan, just take a quick glance at the https://vulkan-tutorial.com/ section for "drawing a triangle" and see what is involved in even just setting up an extremely simple scene in Vulkan. It's beyond crazy. On 8/9/2020 at 6:47 AM, Diego said: There's got to be an advantage though, right? maybe it scales better when you start to get an engine up and running with modern features. Even its own tutorial explains the advantages and disadvantages of Vulkan, and "easier to use" certainly isn't one of them: Quote However, the price you pay for these benefits is that you have to work with a significantly more verbose API. Every detail related to the graphics API needs to be set up from scratch by your application, including initial frame buffer creation and memory management for objects like buffers and texture images. The graphics driver will do a lot less hand holding, which means that you will have to do more work in your application to ensure correct behavior. The takeaway message here is that Vulkan is not for everyone. It is targeted at programmers who are enthusiastic about high performance computer graphics, and are willing to put some work in. If you are more interested in game development, rather than computer graphics, then you may wish to stick to OpenGL or Direct3D, which will not be deprecated in favor of Vulkan anytime soon. Another alternative is to use an engine like Unreal Engine or Unity, which will be able to use Vulkan while exposing a much higher level API to you. So yeah, if you're starting from scratch, Vulkan probably isn't the API to use. If you're a hardcore engine programmer who wants the absolute best performance and direct control of everything the GPU does, it's an excellent choice. STiFU
I am playing Sniper Elite 4 at the moment. It's my first game of the series, so I didn't really know what to expect. It's a rather stealthy game and I really like the idea that enemies slowly triangulate your position, to find out where you (the sniper) are hidden. I Started on "Hard" difficulty, but it was kind of boring because you had that minimap that showed you where all enemies are, whether you have been detected or not, how far enemies can see you etc. Then, I switched to "Hardcore" which thankfully disabled the mini-map, but also the aim-assist. Without the latter, the game is impossible to play because you then have to factor in wind, gravity and enemy movement all by yourself when taking a shot. I really tried, but I couldn't hit anything. How on earth are you supposed to factor in wind manually? Thankfully, the game also offers to customize your difficulty, which I can only recommend, if anyone wants to go play it. I set everything to Hardcore, except for the HUD/GUI. This way, the enemies are nicely challenging and you can keep the aim-assist, but still have the minimap disabled. Now it's actually a lot of fun. @Fidcal, this game might also be something for you. However, unless you use the sniper-zoom, it is actually third person.

STiFU
I recently gave my woman Witcher 3 for the Switch for her birthday. Watching her play, I felt that witcher-urge again, so I now started replaying Witcher 2, but this time the other story path I haven't played, yet. Now we spend our evenings chilling next to each other on the couch, both playing Witcher separately! LIFEGOALS!

Good luck! I am currently working for a premium security software group that is used by Fortune 500 companies and world governments (including USA). Working anywhere else, I would probably be considered an L3 tech but here I am called an L1. We are paid very meagerly because the job market in my city is very poor and we have a very good technical college with lots of graduates eager to get job experience (and willing to work for peanuts). I regularly tell 6 figure earning admins how to do things that they should already know based on their certifications. I should be shopping jobs but I am terrified of being jobless and the ensuing turmoil. So I just keep hoping to get good enough to be an L1.5 and move into a position that actually pays well... 1 1 Quote Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod: http://www.indiedb.com/mods/the-dark-mod (Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...) Same with international organizations and CSO's. They smell your insecurities and they use every weakness to pay their employees as little as possible. Confidential wages should be a crime. Quote "I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."... - 2 July 1844 letter to James Russell Lowell from Edgar Allan Poe. Thanks, right back at ya I also work for one of the bigger ones, and I'm okay with my salary so far, but the employee turnover rate is high here. They mostly thrive off students/graduates. Typically people stay for 2-3 years, get stuck in terms of career and either are let go or go themselves. I had several successful projects under my belt, but then they trew me into something way above my paygrade and experience, then used it as a reason to let me go. I don't mind the "trial by fire" method, but it has to be used with reason. And it was like second or third time they did it, but this time the skill gap was too big. I hope it's for the better though. I made a few acquaintances with people working in my teams, but really didn't like the upper management. So there's no point being in a place where you feel unwanted. Watching her play, I felt that witcher-urge again, so I now started replaying Witcher 2, but this time the other story path I haven't played, yet. Now we spend our evenings chilling next to each other on the couch, both playing Witcher separately! LIFEGOALS! This is really nice! I am currently preparing a campaign for the Witcher pen and paper RPG to get my "daily dose of Wticher". Now I just need people to play with... 4 hours ago, peter_spy said: I got a memo from my supervisor that my contract won't be extended, which means I'm outta work in December. I also had the last day of my old job today. I was working as a research fellow at the university and may even have had the chance to extend my stay, but I am looking for an indefinite position. However, with the second lockdown just starting, I am also not too optimistic about finding something too soon 1
peter_spy
IT is still doing fairly well, despite all the things, but I made some savings just in case. I should survive a few months without pay, although I really hope I won't have to. Quote Misc. assets for TDM | Artstation stuff
Destined
I am a chemist myself and have recently finished a postgraduate course in toxicology. There are a couple of positions open there, but we will see how it goes. Financially I haveunemployment benefits for the coming year and should I not be able to find a new job in a year (which I doubt) I still have some savings. This also reminds me that I should finally file the tax returns for the last couple of years. This is also some money that I can use if bad comes to worse... Still, I am not too pessimistic that I cannot find anything. In doubt I just have to reduce expectations.
