How about one from the starting area? I always got bad fps in that bit. With your fps counter showing, of course.

Hehe, sweet. How are you going to call it? "Re-Return to the City"? ;D

The fps counter on screenshots is almost never accurate. At best, they can say how fps are and post their hardware setup along with it.

Note: the first shot is of an unfinished area. The rest are also subject to change; for a start, those candlelights are getting desaturated in the final version. ;)

Whew!

The attention to detail is impeccable. Only a few mappers have what it takes to build details like that. I certainly don't.

Please make sure it plays as good as it looks.

EDIT:

Viewed the images again in large scale. Most of the screenshots truly are like paintings which one could watch and sip some red wine and each time you look at them you spot something new.

I think these would be nice to post at Moddb (labeled as WIP of course).

Would that be OK Melan?

(If so, Bikerdude please post them to your profile and I will add them to the site.)

Maybe a selection of them, five or six to give Moddb visitors a taste.

Sounds good to me.

Most of the images finally rendered for me ( ) so I was able to download a bunch of them and I can pare-down to the best six of what I have captured...

I just made the last but one my new desktop. :)

Not been posting any screenies from mine recently to avoid spoilers - I mean there'd be nothing left to play as I've already posted so many. But if I spot one good moderate view then maybe I will.

I'm now working on the last main area - but it's a big area.

Is the map up on SVN? If so I can grab some high res shots for Moddb. With your permission of course.

Not sure if you're referring to me AH but if so I'd rather re-grab myself some that have previously been released but the areas may have progressed plus an extra one maybe. Let me know if interested. They will likely be 1680 x 1050.

LOL between you and AluminumHaste we'd better not post anything other that bitmaps  ... (Or better yet, RAW format)...

If AH can get access to Melan's map or Fidcal can supply his WIP shots (as well) then all the better (ratings, ratings, ratings! ) :)

(I am sure most folk would be quite happy with the images already in hand but I won't argue against better quality... ;) )

Hm, this has interested me for a while. How to compress images without those pesky JPG artifacts? I typically use TIFs at home, but they are large and aren't allowed by most forums/image hosts.

Also, since Bikerdude has the original screenshots in TGA, he may be able to supply them. :)

You can have TGA with Run-Length-Encoding, which is loss-less compression, hence no artifacts. Those files are still pretty big though. There is also PNG, which does predictive encoding, I believe.

There is also the possibility to export as jpeg on maximum quality, which looks decent enough. A 1680x1050 image will still weight about 1 Meg then though. In Irfanview you can also specify to disable color-subsampling on jpeg-export in order to get the maximum quality possible. However, this setting bumps up the filesize quite a bit and the effect is hardly noticeable due to the characteristics of human vision.

A very good option for image encoding is jpeg2000, which does not create the classic jpeg artifacts at all. That format isn't supported very widely though.

My Advice: Jpeg on maximum quality and host images on imageshack, since the forum only allows 1 mb in total.

Yeah, that topic makes me depressed about the failure of JPEG-2000...

(Edit: oh jinxed! )

Personally I see no reason for max quality jpegs; just a high quality makes artifacts unnoticeable for normal viewing. You can probably find them if you zoom in but at that magnification the quality is poor anyway even on 1680 x 1050 res.

In Paintshop Pro you can set the compression from 1(high) to 99(low) and I usually use 20. I never heard anyone complain about the technical quality of any screenshots I've posted.

But if moddb have no limit then I can increase my quality for this if necessary. Unfortunately I'm at the limit of my monthly up/download bandwidth so I might drag my feet until 1st December. I'll see what the total is when I've done them.

_Atti_: Promising, especially with the lighting! Take your time, just don't forget to finish it. :)

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
