Thief 4 is trash.

For sure, I'm pretty sure one of my friends will be grabbing it when mp hits stable and so I'll be playing a lot more of it when that happens, until then I'm just letting all the new stuff slowly build up in the background so I can appreciate it all later.

See, that's exactly the problem! These people are making the video game equivalent of soft porn. People who hate porn hate it. People who love porn hate it!

But the majority of people must like it, otherwise it wouldn't sell... the mainstream is content with visual WOW effects and lack of story. Actually, they even want it like that, because if there's too much story, you need to use your head. And people lesser and lesser tend to do so.

But.... a lot of the time these games don't sell. Otherwise we'd be hearing about how CoD was battling games that had CoD players as their focus testers for the top revenue spot on a consistant basis.. only, we don't. We have CoD selling huge amounts with every iteration (possibly barring Ghosts, but MW1, MW2, MW3, BO1, BO2 all sold BIG numbers), and these other games.. comparitively go nowhere. They get average to good reviews, sell a few hundred thousand, and disappear into the long line of games that came before them that tried it, and make room for the next game to try the same and fail. Look at the MMO market. How many MMO's tried to be WoW, tried to kill WoW, and just sucked ass and failed? Pretty much all of them. There's WoW, GW2, EVE Online, FF14:ARR, a few wannabe WoW-killers on life support (going f2p to try make sales where subscriptions failed), and still dropping off the face of the earth, and a long list of dead and gone MMO's.

You don't topple CoD/WoW/[titan of its genre] by trying to clone it. You do something different. Hence why DayZ is so big (something new), Rust is doing pretty good too, meanwhile I:SS is on life support, Nether isn't too popular, and a bunch of other wannabes are getting average or bad reviews from consumers and sometimes review outlets. All these games that I'm talking about here, the life support crowd, the dead, the soon to be dying.. they're the soft porn of gaming. They suck because they didn't try be something new, and they suck because they figured they could just ride another game's coattails, did a lousy job of it and people weren't having any of that nonsense.

Some basic Youtubin' shows there are a bunch of playthroughs for Teef goin' up. I watched one, and loved the visuals. That's about all I loved.

Photoshop, from TTLG, shared a few details:

If you are travelling between quarters in the city hub, or going from the hub to a mission area, there is a glowing blue particle effect about the size of a human head that overlays the doorknobs or gate handle of whatever piece of geometry separates the two areas. It is not as bad as the blue mist portals from TDS as you are not physically walking into a blue cloud. It's just a glowing blue thing on a door that indicates there is a load zone (and thus a loading screen) ahead. Like Deus Ex Invisible War, you then have to press "Yes" or "No" when asked "Do you want to travel to XXX..." which is irritating.

There are other load zones which do NOT have a loading screen. These are poorly disguised by repetitive animations (mashing X to jimmy open a window; mashing X to push a plank out of the way as you shimmy through a narrow space).

Regarding ghosting, EM absolutely knows what the term means. There is a "ghosting" percentage in every most-mission summary screen; it's just one of three possible "playstyles" (the others being "Opportunist" and "Predator".) Your entire mission is divided into a pie chart representing how much of each playstyle you adopted throughout. It's very similar to Splinter Cell Blacklist.

The largest problem with Thief (among other titles) is that the developers are catering to a large audience to try and allow the game adapt to how the player plays, rather than forcing the player to adapt to how the game is played.

Taking the marxist approach, I don't actually think there's too much to "improve" about the current gaming culture. It's industry, and it's there to make profit. More importantly, growing profit. I don't think EM are in any way supposed to listen to the fans of the originals and their qualms, or that "we" (as in the fans of the originals) are entitled to anything. Of course they try to cater to a large audience, in order to make most profit. And no, that doesn't really have anything to do with "greed". I see it as more of a fundamental problem of why things in general are made (any kind of product or service being provided), it's not for the consumers enjoyment, but for profit, i.e. "forcing" the money out of the people who actuallly have some of it left (I'm not sure whether I should be glad that I don't belong into that group of people).

I think there's lots to be misunderstood in that post, but I'm just too drunk now to clarify.

Not saying I like the direction Thiaf has been going. I don't like any bit of it so far. I just don't see any point in trying to tell 'em (the developers) that what they are doing is "wrong". As many people have been noting, it's moving towards mainstream/simplified gameplay, and of course they'd do that. As a commercial company they don't have any obligation other than making profit, which they are definately trying to achieve. (hence the "that's so 90's" comments of some of the developers, some things that "we" appreciate just don't sell well today. Not to say that they are completey right with their decisions... a suprising amount of the reviews have been negative so far, so they might not even succeed with that goal). It's just that I reall wouldn't count too much on a company, that's clearly commercial, to care for anything but profit. I don't like it, I in fact despise the fact that our economy works that way, I just think that we're better off trying to make good games by ourselves for ourselves, and not counting on AAA game developers to deliver what we'd like.

Migh have not answered your points really, again, I might not be fully capable of reading and understanding and/or answering your points right now. Let me think about all of this while a bit less under the influence of intoxicating substances :P

Ah, I guess you mean all the "We respect Thief's DNA" kinda stuff? And not really doing anything that's in line with the originals at all (Free exploration and movement, actually adult writing)? Well, if so, that's kinda what I meant. I really wouldn't expect them to do anything like that in the first place, since it doesn't sell. If that's still not it (you can disagree, I just wanna know if I got the gist of what you were saying correct) I'll just shut my mouth for now.

No sound on impact as in guards won't hear when you take out someone near them, or just not notice if you miss? If the first, yeah, totally OP. If the latter, I wouldn't want to buy that. That'd make me lose out on a ghetto version of the noisemaker arrows. One way or the other, seems they'll really stick with the simplified, kill-happy way they've been going so far.

I purchased that on steam months ago as I loved DK1/2.

As I type this, I am playing DK2 in parallel. I am astonished how beautiful the game looks even today. I can only wonder why it takes a hundred devs today to accomplish what less than 30 made back in the day. The same goes for I-War (Independence War in the US), a game that was made by a company of what, 10 devs? Shame on you, today's AAA devs! Look at what devs back in the day and Indie devs today can accomplish!

Ea is back again... not surprised here since they already are doing this:

Why is there no "I DON'T like this" button? ;)

What the hell is with the prices in those shots? A single broadhead arrow costs 15G??? That's the same cost as a "choke" (gas) arrow, and three times as much as a water arrow!

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
