Thief 4 is trash.

Thiaf is a lot of Assassin's Creed

I find it amusing how many of the previews will mention that a feature in New Thief is "a lot like Assassin's Creed" and treat it as if that was somehow a good thing. It seems like the new thief team couldn't come up with many new ideas of their own, so they just copied everything over from other games.

This is exactly what I wanted them to do, for the most part. Problem is, I was hoping all the source material came from Thief games. Few and far between on that, though.

The more i see from this game, the more i belief that's it's some trypical mediocre modern trash game too. It doesn't have the Thief atmosphere, the style is weird, the whole thing seems to be bloated into some nowadays "OH MY GOD" visual experience without some decent fundament. Reminds me, like many games nowadays, of modern Hollywod movies. All technically perfect, with a lot of awesome and what not visuals, but terribly lacking in substance and originality. It's a completely other thing, but i just started to play No one lives forever, and you just can feel the fun and freedom the developers had when programming the game. I guess nowadays it's more like "Here, you guys get a budget, make a blockbuster without any own ideas which could lead into unpopularity".

No One Lives Forever and NOLF2 are both really great games. You'll have a great time playing those games. Monolith is a great studio and I wish they'd make more stuff.

Can't PM me?? That's okay. In your case, I'd really rather not see what you have to say privately, but would like to always keep it public with witnesses. That's how it's gotta be, I'm afraid.

Wow. That's really inappropriate, and comments like that were pretty much built for private messaging. I know we've had some differences over on TTLG in the past, but Jesus. Witnesses? WTF. You act as if I'm assaulting or stalking you.

Well for the record, I was going to offer some disk space over on Southquarter because earlier in this thread you mentioned you didn't have a reliable place to store some of your files. But I'm guessing you're not going to be too interested in that offer after the above comment.

Man, gotta say I'm a little floored right now. Witnesses!

Edit: I know this should go without saying, but if there's anything else to discuss on this topic, it should be done by PM or not at all.

Er, what's with the attitude matey!? This isn't the ttlg forums so you'll find there isn't much patience for this kind of BS here.

I.... I think I broke. I've finally had my own personal "thief 4 is trash" moment.. but it was with Dungeon Keeper. I know this isn't really on topic for this thread, but I think I can finally fully sympathise with some of the sentiments on display here.

Prepare to die inside more than a little if you're a fan of the old DK games.

Thief 4 looks like at least the art department understands what Thief is about.. MechWarrior Online has potential if you rip out some of the more egregious f2p bullshit and make it the mp component of what would have been MechWarrior 5.. hell even EA's devilish cackling over plans to reboot Command and Conquer, might still play like a C&C title at some level. THIS?!?! Time locked gem seam excavation? Highly priced "gem" (I'm guessing some form of currency for... something) packages? Mobile? Other than some art resemblances (a stretch at that, and ooh what a stretch it is), how does this resemble DK at all? I can't believe I just defended t4 and mwo in comparison to this. Time for EA to earn worst company in America for the third year running, this is too far. The game industry needs to burn.

TL;DR

I'm on the hate train, what's the menu like?

Do they really believe they can just keep watering existing franchises down to some point where suddenly they'll have another CoD/BF style breakout of popularity and profitability? Is this why they sit on acquired IP's for 10+ years, so the old fans move on/die off to minimise the fuss raised? I'm sure it's nothing so personal, but it feels like contempt from the industry. Oh you guys all bought [title] and convinced us it was profitable enough to acquire, then sit on? Well, here it is, a decade later with more than just a facelift and tummy tuck and ... what do you mean you don't like it?

Before it was just almost all of my childhood and early teen favourites being pissed all over like the floor in the men's room in a busy pub shortly before the final call... now it's probably all of them, I can't think of, off the top of my head, any more games I enjoyed on the level I enjoyed those games that either hasn't been urinated on, or is being sat on to probably be urinated on in the next few years in the hope I'll have found something else to care/worry about and won't say anything.

I think the biggest problem is that there is a much, much wider range of entertainment and still the same number of hours in the day. There are people who enjoy being frustrated and challenged, but when you have five other fun things you could be doing, it's a lot easier to just jump to something else. If you're trying to sell to as many people as possible, you need to aim at the lowest common denominator, which is the person on their couch who is trying to decide between watching Netflix, jumping on social media, playing one of a dozen games on three or four different systems, watching a movie on demand, etc. You have to design differently for that kind of person than you do for a games enthusiast.

My theory as to using a regular HDD instead of SSD would be at the start they want to reduce costs and get the console in as many hands as possible so they use regular HDDs... But after a period of time they can offer SSD drives say for an extra $100 which they can market as increasing game speed and lowering loading times without having to release a new console. It's obviously backwards compatible with all games as well so from a marketing standpoint its genius!

Well, I think it was the German magazine PC Games Hardware who tested the PS4 with an SSD (Samsung 840, IIRC). They found no noticable performance gains, at least none that would warrant buying such an expensive drive.

WRT Dungeon Keeper, yeah, I saw that too. Fortunately, there is War for the Overworld (https://wftogame.com/) and Dwelvers (http://dwelvers.com/). These alternatives are currently in development and are even playable already (check out the Dwelvers demo on their main page). Dwelvers especially is less of a DK clone than WFTO, as it offers several ground levels as well as production cycles like in The Settlers. And it's cute to watch. ^_^

See, that's exactly the problem! These people are making the video game equivalent of soft porn. People who hate porn hate it. People who love porn hate it! If your focus test group tells you to change x y and z because [game] does it that way, and you do it, chances are they still won't like your game because now it's trying to be [game], and not only does [game] do it better, but they already have [game] and don't need to make an investment to get that gameplay. It's a game where everyone loses except the guy who gets paid to get paid. Don't get me wrong, I understand the sentiment. I also understand that it so very often goes wrong, and takes the game down with it.

I saw a youtube video where they tested some alternative drives in a PS4 - a 7200rpm, an SSHD, and an SSD. Other than the SSHD choosing some bizarre cycle of what to cache, it looked like the best bang for buck perf upgrade for the system, though the 7200rpm was pretty solid as well. The SSD did not deliver the performance you'd expect at the price point.

Already got WFTO, waiting for the mp patch to hit stable.. the sandbox levels just aren't cutting it anymore, but so far it's looking pretty promising, it's a lot closer to DK than Dungeons (something people thought would be DK), or this new "DK" that I don't even consider to be DK after that video and the accompanying pictures I saw in the Escapist article that I found the video on. It just isn't DK. Please EA, stop calling it DK, it really isn't. C&C Generals was a fine RTS, but it wasn't C&C. It wasn't Allies vs Soviets, nor was it GDI vs NOD (vs Scrin). In the same way, this is not DK. It's a top down cutesy cartoony game (that visually reminds me of RISK Factions), that has minor inspiration from DK.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
