This works fine for me under 2.12 beta, and as with the others, enabling bloom fixed the water problem. This should be corrected in another way though, because most people will probably not enable all the experimental graphics features.

This mission includes the folder game_maps and that file. I guess that's how it's intended, that you include the files yourself instead of linking to a (not excisting) core version, although personally I think a generic map_of_icon.tga file could be used in core since it's only an inventory icon, so it doesn't have to be a smaller version of the actual map used.

A lot of missions just have the same map_of_icon.tga file included in their fm:

Anyway, it's not important I guess.

Just installed the first 2.12 beta and switched to altham (A Night in Altham).Ā  Started mission and was simply exploring the configuration menus ... and it crashed!Ā  I've attached a a good part of the log below (starting from reload, presumably triggered by selecting the mission):

Okay, this probably isn't the right place to report it, but some developers will see it here so I'll do it nevertheless ;): I just wanted to update TDM on another PC and when I use Google to find the installer, the first hit sends me to the following page where all links are dead: https://www.thedarkmod.com/download-the-mod/. The second hit sends me to the correct page (https://www.thedarkmod.com/downloads/), so I think the first page needs to be removed or get updated links!

This is caused by DXT1 compression of textures/darkmod/sfx/black_matt.tga.

This image has constant color (1, 1, 1) everywhere, i.e. almost black.

  • Previously, the image was compressed by OpenGL driver, so you could get different results depending on vendor. I got (0, 0, 0) everywhere, you probably got the same. But someone else on another vendor could get something else.
  • Now, compression is done by our code, same for everyone. It compresses the color to (0, 1, 0). Obviously, this is a bit closer to (1, 1, 1) than (0, 0, 0) šŸ˜‰
  • Notice that DXT1 uses 5 bits for red and blue but 6 bits for green. So while it is possible to represent 1/255 value for green, it is not possible to do the same for red and blue.

However, this 1 tick adds a bit of green to the overly black picture, and then you apply huge gamma correction (basically take sqrt of all color components) and this green becomes noticeable.

Some ways to fix the issue:

  1. Use _black texture. It is (0, 0, 0), and I am rather sure it will be compressed to (0, 0, 0) by all implementations.
  2. Modify textures/darkmod/sfx/black_matt to be full black (0, 0, 0).
  3. Add forceHighQuality to the stage which blends textures/darkmod/sfx/black_matt.
  4. Add DDS version of textures/darkmod/sfx/black_matt to core assets.

Note that points 1, 2, 4 produce equivalent output, i.e. force texture to (0, 0, 0) color.
Point 3 leaves the texture as (1, 1, 1), but there is no way to do this for all materials: the keyword has to be added to each material.

Points 1 and 3 look bad because they fix the problem now, but don't stop the problem from happening again in the future.

Using _black in the water material instead ofĀ textures/darkmod/sfx/black_matt fixes it in my WIP, so that will put the problem out of sight for me in the short term, but obviously doesn't address High Expectations. I could release an update for it, but it sounds like you're saying it's not a good long-term fix?Ā

There are many uses of this texture, and all of them use this compression algorithm.
Perhaps replace it with full black texture would be better, since it already works that way.

I wonder why this texture was even created with (1, 1, 1)...

I think there was a quirk in the engine that treated pure 0 black as an artist error so a small uplift was added to ensure proper light response. This was more critical when the ambient had a Fresnel component.

The DXT1 encoding was to save on storage. I think that's a silly rationale since a pure single color texture could technically be represented by a single pixel. No pressing need to compress that or even a 32x32 texture but I suppose if someone is obsessed with saving texture storage they could choose png or a better dxt version.

TLDR; Transparent \ Blend textures should be fine with 0,0,0 color and single color textures don't need aggressive compression. _black should be fine for all such materials.

I tried the beta yesterday in the Training Mission. The new frob system is very nice. It's very easy now to pick up a body (obviously), and, the manipulation of limbs is easy as well (although it will surely take some time for me to get used to it, simply because I'm so used to the old system).

Not so excited about some other changes. The leaning, for example, while improving the viewing angle of the player, feels a bit unrealistic. I know, the new system is closer to the one in the original game, but, I don't know if any of you tried to lean in real life. No way any human being could lean so wide, unless it's tied to a rubber band. I get it, gameplay isn't always about realism (actually, in most cases, it isn't), but, I think a game shouldn't feel too arcade-y, and, this definitely does feel arcade. And, I always liked Dark Mod for its rather realistic movement.

Same with the new mantling. I don't know what you felt was wrong with the mantling before, but, this new, faster system just feels arcade. The mantling was already very quick compared to what a human is capable in real life, but, the new system even exaggerates that. Yes, it feels smooth and fast, but, I prefer a bit of realism.

So, yeah, rather a 1 out of 3 out of the systems I mentioned which I feel like is an improvement. The leaning and mantling, I rather consider setback.

I think this is, in general, a bit "bleeding edge" in terms of gameplay changes. I really didn't feel like mantling and leaning needed an improvement, for example, and, it might make a change for missions which were designed with the original gameplay.

It was mainly the overhead mantle with its long initial hang-phase, that was shortened, while everything else was just minor adjustments. The hang-phase really was extremely long and shortening that was a good suggestion in my opinion. However, I do agree that we went a bit too far with the adjustment. One might argue that a very short hang-phase is realistic, when jumping upwards with high velocity. Conversely, it is rather unrealistic when falling fast, which is why I had internally proposed to keep a longer hang-phase when falling fast. That suggestion didn't gain a lot of traction, 'though, and I did not want to stretch the discussion even further, so I just did not follow up on this.

By any chance, did you also try the extension of the new frob system where the hold-type-grabber is used not only for limbs, but for all junk etc.? You can enable it with tdm_holdfrob_drag_all_entities. What are your thoughts? I had implemented that in order to make the new system a bit more consistent.

What I tried:
1. Disabling SMT by "echo off > /sys/devices/system/cpu/smt/control"
2. Disabling all (except one) CPU's by issuing "echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuN/online"

Results:
Neither of this changed anything- the same pthread_join() error and dump as above.

With a year full of changes, I'm pretty sure I can find something that might increase GPU load in some cases.

However, if it seems that 2.12 is slower to you.
Please find some specific locations/cases, compare to 2.11, and report this.
Be sure to include name of mission, viewpos, and you config file (see the wiki page linked in the first post of this thread).

Occasionally unintended performance regressions happen.
The worst thing is that they are rarely noticed until a few years later...

This consistently crash when witnessing the "entertainment".

Messages about pthreads is just some trash which is printed almost always.
The issue is most likely not related to it.

Please provide some more specific info.
Location (getviewpos), maybe savefile. Probably instead config file too.

No, it does not happen in 2.11.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
